Nip once wore a Rising Sun head band when flying into Barbers Point.

I was in VA-86 onboard when the movie was filmed. We also had a proud, Japanese-American pilot in the squadron (he had rotated out prior to the filming) who went up to the flight deck to man-up on Dec. 6th the previous cruise wearing the Rising Sun headband.

When cable was "new" I watched that movie every time it was on. Years later when I checked into VFA-15 fresh out of apprenticeship training I found out we were in Air Wing 8.
Well, the movie is over and here is what I learned. Even if we brought back the Zombie Hoovers we can not change the path of history.

it is fun to see a carrier filled with a diversity of aircraft...
Last time I watched that movie was when I watched it onboard Nimitz . . . and I thought all the WX officers were traditionally called called Black Cloud no matter what their race was.

And our ready room was featured prominently!

Love the soundtrack in Final Countdown and must admit I imagined the general quarters theme playing in my head during a flight or two.

They pushed the release date for TOPGUN 2. Maverick is definitely a RADM or retired pilot at The Show by now. I still want to see the parody version starring Val Kilmer turned defense contractor as a quasi Fat Leonard.

Maverick's first foray in The Show was in a failed venture, aptly named Goose Airlines.

During the economic downturn of 2008, Goose Airlines was involved in a credit default swap scandal and CEO Maverick was indicted for

wait for it...

... writing checks his body couldn't cash.

Maverick was exonerated in the matter (his good friends Harmon Rabb and Joanne Galloway helped a lot, the studios are thinking about making this part of the story into a prequel, the draft script is called "Bail Out" ha ha get it? a double entendre) but he was ousted from Goose Airlines and left virtually penniless.

Maverick, reduced to pawning his possessions—even his alternates plaque from the ladies' room—to pay his bills, hit rock bottom. He called his old detailer and made his way back into the naval service, which is where Top Gun 2 picks up.

The point of all this is alas, Maverick doesn't have a seniority number at any airline.

Don’t leave me hanging. Did Mav at least crawl/ walk/ run through enough correspondence courses to earn a reserve retirement and keep his NEX/commissary privileges?

No, because it's 2020, he hasn't retired yet, and they already shitcanned the correspondence thing. :)
