Happened upon this thread and thought it might be interesting to see what has changed over the decades. I always liked Palma, Rhodes and Corfu.
I’ve only done a 7th fleet deployment so far. Favorites were Japan (Sasebo) and Korea.
Our squadron was on shore patrol duty when the carrier pulled into Busan, but I volunteered for the 4-man shore patrol “DET” in Seoul which was pretty cool. Got to fly off the boat a couple days early, too.

All my deployments were very operational - so lots of Bahrain / Dubai / Bahrain / Dubai / Bahrain / Dubai / Bahrain / Dubai.
Of the relatively good ones we hit going to / from -
- Marseille FR wasn't bad
- Naples you can hit Rome.
- Cyprus is great food and lots of British people on vacation
- Portugal was fun

Oslo is pricey but amazing. I was also really impressed by Split, Croatia, and Trieste, Italy.
Venice is only an hour-and-a-half train ride from Trieste, and you can see pretty much everything in Venice in one day. We took an early train out, walked, ate, and drank our faces off all day, and then took a late (2100-ish) train back to Trieste.
Palma was ok. We stayed at an adults-only all-inclusive resort. I think my JOs really put the bartending staff to the test on that port call. We old guys played a few rounds of golf, which was nice and made hauling my clubs onto the boat worth it.
