I DO wear shirt stays Nittany... I went to OCS. Tell that to the ROTC and canoe-u types. (here come the flames...)

PSW went to OCS and doesn't wear shirt stays. I went to USNA and wear shirt stays. That pretty much threw your theory/statement out the window...

For poly wools and working whites, I buy m/l and use shirt stays with a chiefs tuck. For washes I just buy the tapered fit, no shirt stays and do a little chiefs tuck. The tuck and stays do enough for me. Im a 33 waist too.
