V-neck is authorized. I think the reason you see mostly senior guys wearing them is that in the old days it was a shoe thing to wear the crew neck.

), and then the V-necks were mandated for Trop Khaki/White shirts. I believe this took place during Zumwalt's time, and then it turned around again and finally became "optional" once more, as some folks whined the crew-necks back into acceptability. The "official rumor" had it that some high-placed Admiral's wives didn't like the "chesty look" of the v-necks. It had also been determined that there was little "uniformity" w/ crew necks -- some new, some tattered, some yellow from too many ship's washings -- so I guess "they" thought that chest hair would be "uniform"???
