V-neck is authorized. I think the reason you see mostly senior guys wearing them is that in the old days it was a shoe thing to wear the crew neck.

Maybe we can get an A4s ruling here.
 
V-neck is the way to go, period. If you are hairy like MB, shave.

Concur -- but we never thought: "AHA!! Those fuckin' Blackshoes!!! Tryin' to sneak in under the radar AGAIN!!!" :eek:

We had to wear crew-neck when Middies (I don't think V-necks were invented just yet in the Naval experience -- seriously :)), and then the V-necks were mandated for Trop Khaki/White shirts. I believe this took place during Zumwalt's time, and then it turned around again and finally became "optional" once more, as some folks whined the crew-necks back into acceptability. The "official rumor" had it that some high-placed Admiral's wives didn't like the "chesty look" of the v-necks. It had also been determined that there was little "uniformity" w/ crew necks -- some new, some tattered, some yellow from too many ship's washings -- so I guess "they" thought that chest hair would be "uniform"??? :D

At first I didn't "like" the V-necks, then after getting used to them, I wouldn't go back to the crew neck -- too much non-essential crap stickin' up in/around the neck/collar of the Trop shirts.

In the Tropics, after the morning routine of S/S/S ... shit/shower/shave ... you'd start out w/ a clean khaki shirt and by 0900 you'd broken your first sweat of the day -- and that's w/ a 65/35 cottom/poly blend khaki shirt and 100% cotton T-shirt -- so many of us just stopped wearing T-shirts of any kind in khakis and went "commando" (at least on the upper half as pictured by the extremely studly-lookin' male model on deck in CUBI - above ). AND ESPECIALLY after the ship's laundry had shrunk even the highest quality 100% cotton T-variants of any type into puppet sizes (quality = J.C. Penney's then -- I kid you not :)) ....

You can imagine my shock when joining the airlines and seeing that most of the '70's male flight attendants wore white T-shirt crew-necks, jeans, and cowboy boots while on "Liberty" ... so I guess we dodged that bullet without even knowing it. :eek:

Call me ignorant and ill-bred, but what exactly do you have tailored on a khaki shirt? I honestly didn't know that was an option, but I'm still not understanding what gets tailored.

Although, I probably am part of the 10% that makes them look good out of the box :D.
 
So if I (mr clean chest) wore a v-neck, say next time I stood ASDO/WDO/etc, I would not get a hard time? Or would that be more of a "wait till you are winged" kind of thing? Just curious....

Also, what is the consensus about the leather jackets? Only greens until you have wings? Inquiring minds would like to know :)

I say trial and error...the great SNA's of yesteryear didn't have Air Warriors...they just did it and found out what was cool or not. :) ...That's the fun part about being a noob, you get sh!t and then you get to dish it when you aren't the lowest on the totem pole.

That being said..when I get that far...I'm going to PM you and ask you the do's and don'ts ... :D

This thread is so painful. I don't know if it's still policy, but I know several years ago, Academy guys were supposed to wear V-necks w/ short sleeved dress shirts (Summer whites, khakis). It was part of their bizarre uniform regs, like wearing a white jumper w/ a blue-rimmed dixie cup and black dress shoes. Knowing this was their "policy," it was reason enough for me to wear crew-necks, but wear whatever you want. It's in the regs, so don't worry about it.

As for the OP, why buy stuff? If you're prior, maybe, because you have the cash, but everyone is going to look uniformly dumpy in the wash khakis they issue. Just deal with it and wait until you get closer to your commissioning weight and build.

The French guys do this too w/ their summer whites....I wonder what that says about our USNA friends? (only kidding, the Frenchies were cool dudes). Anyhow, I guess the false sense of anonymity here on the interwebs just brings all the lame/newbie questions out ;)

You have it tailored to make you NOT look like a bag off ass. What is hard to understand?

It's the difference between buying nameless Jeans from Target and buying DKNY Jeans from Macy's. In one pair, you look frumpy-dumpy, and the other you look slick. I looked like crap until my khakis got cut up.

I've worn them since commissioning and have never gotten any grief.
 
I second the tailoring comment, but only because the Navy assumes if you're a female and you have big boobs/large shoulders you are automatically a fatass. Seriously, if I get shirts that fit my upper body, they are automatically tents at the bottom that I could probably wear when I'm nine months pregnant. Shirt stays don't help in that situation, so I have to get all my uniform shirts taken in the sides.
