No, I don't mean our resident Whidbey Island VP 3P and lunch go-getter.

I mean favorite spots to grab a bite when you touch down. ON BASE/airfield. No "Hooters in Austin". The weirder the better. A few of mine:

BEST (imho):

Whidbey (yes there are a FEW good things there) had a great slop-shop in one of the VP hangars. I can see why you guys have such huge guts. They served these ridiculous ground beef filled taco tubes with hot sauce. Good sausage and biscuits too. Excellent hangover cure after a terrible night "on the town" in Oak Harbor at "the Screaming Dolphin" or "Blue Oyster" or whatever that sh!t-hole bar is called.

Okinawa Navy side Propstop on Kadena Air Base. Mmmmm Buckwheat noodles and mystery meat.

Utapao Royal Thai Naval Airbase snack shack. Anything 'hand made' is eat at your own risk. I threw the dice a few times and had some great soups. More varieties of "Pringles" than I ever thought possible (pickle? prawn?). Good 'fried rice' or whatever they slop in a 16 oz styro for a buck. (Also has a great gift shop when you realize you didn't buy anyone back home anything on that trip).

WORST

Royal Omani Air Force US Navy Messing Facility. "Would you like me to spit in this some more?" God help the hapless LTJG who has to buy food for a 10 hour burner for his entire crew in this "moonbase-alpha" crotch of the world. MINIMAL english. You order pancakes and get simple sugar syrup with them (granular sugar melted into water). Anything with cheese contains cheese made from the milk of any animal BUT a cow. Beef? Dream on, thats Camel baby! All time worst: "BBQ Chiksen sambwich" (actual spelling) featuring every joint, bit of skin, and fat from a chicken, sans any actual edible meat, in ketchup. MMMMMM. (Really good ice cream in the desert though, WEIRD).

Andersen Air Base Guam: if the Dunkin Donuts in Flt Ops is actually open, you can get a decent cup of coffee and a fat pill. But if you're on ops hours and they're closed, you're screwed. You can choose between what I think are the worst box lunches EVER (PB and J, Snickers Bar, can of Coke???) or the amazing carousal machine of Ramen Noodles and "chik'n and bak'n sandwich (NOTE: CONTAINS NO CHICKEN OR BACON).

Hip Pocket Deli outside the front gate of Pcola is a great little deli/Greek place. Its only open a few hours during lunch, but its got great food and the owner is a really nice guy. Great grouper subs, and the biggest pieces of cake I've ever seen.

WORST:
Rok Hard Cafe Camp Mujuk (as bad as it sounds) in Korea. Yakki man do (think deep fried wonton filled wiht god know what with the smell of open benjo ditches wafting in as you watch re-runs of ultimate fighting championship in minus 10 below cold.

Best:
Mexican restraunt in Yuma right at Base Ops great food and you always run into some guy you went to flgiht school. floated, etc with. yuma is the crossroads of Marine Aviation.

a review of all the world's box lunches

Hah, whats funny is; I posted that link in advanced props a few months ago. Good to bring it back though.

Whats the name of that place...Acadiana? Arcadiana? T-34c stop for gas enroute from corpus to pcola? They had the 1 dollar ice cream and bowl of cajun slop with all gas purchases...awesome.

Refresh my memory...was it David Wayne Hooks (looooong time ago) that had the kick-@ss chocolate chip cookies?

best place I have been to (limited exposure in the training command) David Wayne Hooks in TX. Everything on the menu is 1 dollar and the servings are pretty big, so you are garuanteed to have to adjust the velcro on the flight suit.

Here is some old school TACAIR gouge

On Base:

- Tinker burger
- SAC box lunch at Offutt (much bigger than those small ones they give the fighter boys)
- Anything the chief's mess is grilling outside the hangar on det (Fallon, Key West, El Centro come to mind). Nothing like a greasy slider between brief and walking to fly a low-level bombing mission.
- Weststar Aviation, Grand Junction, CO. Pizza delivered to the jet.
- I-Bar, NASNI. Hey, it's finger food but it's free.

Off base:
- Scrubbies, Mountain Home AFB. Gone but not forgotten
- La Pasdita. Seeley CA outside the El Centro gate. Burrito the size of your forearm for $5.

Oh, and my personnel worst. Canned rice and squid supplanted by all the beer we could get out the vending machines on Iwo Jima after a 350 mile bingo due weather that left 3 Hornets, 1 Prowler, and 3 Vikings on the beach overnight .

Afterburner in Yuma is awesome. Used to go there every day for lunch.

Big burritos.

When I saw this thread, the first thing that came to my mind was the afdterburner at MCAS Yuma. I was there for 3 months WTI. I have never had a Buritos that good. After eating launch, we will walk back the entire stretch of the flight-line back to the arming area passing gas as we walked. Good times !!

Aight. I can't agree with the Guam assessment. There's a greasy spoon right next to the commissary that has some really decent breakfast burritos, and inside the commissary they make a decent sandwich. Can't speak for anything else on the base though...

That place was the worst, cheese toasties anyone? Pepper steak, not what you are thinking, a slab of camel or other unidentifiable fatty meat covered in this gray sludge with a pound of pepper dumped on top... yeach! I always got a good laugh out of the syrup, picture 10W30 weight motor oil in a can, and it is what they gave us, same viscosity too! I made the mistake of going to get ice from their kitchen, and saw what went on behind the door... no thanks, I'll sneak over to the O'club and risk getting yelled at by the OPSO for some good humus and beer with the brits.

MISAWA: The Mokateki (sp?), nothing like a good calzone the size of your head, plus it is open 24/7, gotta love that.

KBAY: VP9 geedunk, they did it right, sandwiches and pizza, subs, you name it.
