Well, that's 4 of us reporting to OCS on 10/26. Are any of you former enlisted? What are your backgrounds?
I'm active duty with 10 in and I'm going to be scraping under the wire age-wise. Is anyone else in the same boat or am I going to be the only ancient one? Hope not-

I've never been in the military or done ROTC. I am a Marine Corps brat; my father did 22 years so I've been around the military my whole life. I currently work at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center in San Diego. I graduated from San Diego State Univ. with a B.A. in International Security Conflict Resolution and I have a minor in Italian from the Univ. of Mayrland European Division.
Are you former enlisted?

Sara Coffman-
I am enlisted now. I'm a welding inspector for Tridents in Washington State and I finished my B.S. degree (Workforce Education and Curriculum Development from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale) just prior to 9/11. Good thing. Things got pretty hectic after that.
I'm third generation Navy. Dad and Grandpa both were enlisted and several uncles are(or have been)officers.

Mark-
No prior service for me either. However, both of my brothers were Navy enlisted. I’m not exactly sure what their jobs were, but they often mentioned that they worked a lot with a group called “Shore Patrol.” I went to college with the intention of being a civilian my whole life because my eyes weren’t good enough to be a pilot in the military. But that all changed with PRK. I’m 25…not exactly young myself. You and I might be the two idiots marching with our pants around our ankles while sucking our thumbs and holding our rifles by the muzzle. “Get up here, Private Pile, you’re too slow!!! Your ass looks like 150 pounds of chewed bubble gum. Do know that, Pile?!?!” Wait a second...you're prior enlisted. I guess that's just going to be me!

Hey folks,

I've sent e-mails to a few of you already. I'm prior enlisted - Intelligence Specialist Second Class - and graduated from Illinois State University in '98 with a degree in political science. Looking forward to fun in the sun on Oct 26 ;)

Where are you all of you from? When and how are you getting to OCS? I definitely don't want to drive all the way to FL from San Diego. I'm not sure if I want to arrive a day before, or wait until the last possible minute. It would be kind of nice if we could meet before the "Big Day".

Me personally, no prior service.. I'm only 22. Just graduated from college back in December... come from a Navy family, dad was a Navy pilot, grandfathers were both commisioned, one is a USNA grad. Keep in touch, we all gotsta party before hand. Hartman and I are already planning on getting sheeot faced a few days before the "big day."

I'll be driving to OCS from Houston. Not exactly sure when I'll get there though. I guess I need to look into staying at the BOQ, what travel expenses are reimbursable, etc.

I'll probably wear my Reef platform flip flops, some short shorts, a tight midriff top and tons of jewelry. Why not, I won't be able to wear anything fun and fashionable for a while. Right? Na, I'll probably wear my Reefs and something comfortable. We probably won't be in the outfit of our choosing for long anyway. I don't know what to do about my hair; I'm having real issues. Should I get it chopped off at my salon right before I leave or wait for some barber who couldn't pass beauty school to give me a horrible whack job. I've heard conflicting things about haircuts for females. Are there anyother females reporting to OCS on 26 Oct?

Also, are you guys taking your POVs? I'm debating on wheter or not to just sell mine; I really don't feel like driving out to FL and putting all those miles on my car. I've heard we won't be able to drive them while we're in OCS anyway.

Have you guys started studying the General Orders of a Sentry, the Big Three, etc...?

Sara,

I've debated whether to bring my car too. It has over 180K miles on it, so I'm not thrilled with the idea of the drive. It's a good idea to have the General Orders and Code of Conduct memorized. I remember when I was in boot camp and recruits would get in trouble for not being able to recite a few lines verbatim. It's not worth the headache. Oh, and the barbers are going to cut your hair anyways...might as well let 'em do it ;)

Pat,

Does FL have state sales tax? If so, how high is it? I am thinking about selling my car and purchasing a new one. But, I don't want to purchase it CA if FL doesn't have a sales tax. California has 7.75% sales tax and the licensing/registration fees are outrageous. If I can get a cheaper sales tax and licensing/registration fees in FL I'll wait until after OCS to buy a new vehcile.

Mari,

7% is a little better than 7.75%. The registration fees in CA are ridiculous! I just paid my '03 registration for my '99 Civic and it cost $116. Did you transfer your residency from CA to FL? Are you at North Island? I work across the bay from North Island and see you your planes all the time.

Hey,
Somebody named Mike typed this message on July 9. From what I understand, he graduated from VMI this year, is going to Navy flight school soon and leaves for OCS soon. I was a RAT at VMI in 1999-2000, so he would have been a Third Classman while I was there. I'm also leaving for OCS, but not till Sept. 28. If anybody knows who this guy "Mike" is, please let me know. I'd love to get in touch with him.
Thanks,

-Mark

Thanks for the information. I thought that everyone going to flight school now had to go through the IFS program before starting API. I was NROTC scholarship at VMI. You are stashed in Great Mistakes. I was there in Dec 96 for boot camp. I never want to go back there.

Mike

IFS is open to everyone starting 01OCT02. In order to get it you have to have less that 15 flight hours and have not soloed. Don't worry about asking anyone, just keep your head down and they will tell you when and where to be.
