I had primary IP's in VT-6 that smoked cigarretes in the cockpit all the time. Especially in RI's.

My IP was smoking a cigarette during my FAM-13 solo check. He didn't appreciate it when I asked if the smoke and fumes was intended to be a simulated EP. A split second later and the throttle came back to idle simultaneously with the word "simulated" growling from the rear cockpit (right over the bay in Corpus Christi).

Clear improvement. I am sticking with my assessment...ASW Scheme I: For use in areas where the prevailing weather was clear or clear with broken clouds (the southern United States seaboard, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, and South America). This was a topside of nonspecular Dark Gull Gray, sides of nonspecular Light Gull Gray, and bottom of Gloss White. The side surfaces in the shadow of the wings and horizontal tail were to be painted nonspecular Insignia White. In a gray-scale picture, it looks very much like the blue tri-color scheme
That was a thing. Though the cigar was tough to light. I remember flying around Daphne with the canopy open thinking I was a badass on my aerobatic solo.

It is NOT an Atlantic ASW scheme because that’s gull grey and light grey. That airplane is RAF sky blue and dark green. Call your optometrist!

I was afraid my pocket checklist would up and blow out of the cockpit so I closed my canopy after about two minutes of straight and level.
No cigar- it never even crossed my mind at the time.

Oh yes...south of Corpus out over the Gulf with the canopy open...I even “strafed” a few enemy fishing boats! It didn’t hurt that VT-27’s call sign was Bearcat.
My personal favorite wasn't the canopy, it was the AF kid who decided he'd be all "I'm a fighter guy" and wear his O2 mask on his fam solo. Of course, the PRs had neglected to adjust the mic in his mask, so he apparently checked into Barin sounding like he was talking from the bottom of a barrel. The RDO went "WTF is the stupid stud doing now," the story got out, and he got mocked mercilessly at his tie cutting. Partly because he'd done all that after being vocal that he wanted to fly C-5s . . .
I was that guy that - on purpose - wore my O2 mask the whole time on a PA solo. BA in headwork, because I left the diluter control on manual/100% and drained the O2 bottle and got shit for it on return because they had to service it before the next flight!
