Serves him right. That's the problem wiht a lot of the JROTC kids. They think by wearing a uniform, that they've joined the armed forces and can therefore act like a Sailor/Marine/Soldier/Airman.

After our most recent District Inspection, the Senior Inspecting Officer (a Cobra Driver formerly with HMLA-169) made this little speech to the battalion where he adressed the fact that "...You are NOT Marines. You are CADETS of the Marine Corps Junior ROTC..." of course he balanced it out with, "... I've earned the title of Marine, but I wish I was given the opportunity to be a Cadet when I was in high school."

That reminds me of a story
There was a 2nd year Cadet who was learning to command a platoon for drill. He started yelling out commands, trying to mimic a Drill Instructor. I was formed up in the platoon with the rest of the cadets trying to follow the orders he gave. The first 5 minutes were a total disaster, so many commands were'nt even distinguishable from eachother, and he actually had the nerve to scold the platoon.
Being the Senior cadet there I immidiately asked the platoon, "how many of you are having trouble understanding *name withheld*?"
Hands went up like fireworks at 4th of July.
So I then walk up to him and have a private conversation, inaudible to the rest of the platoon.
I asked, "Does the Marine Corps pay you to be a Drill Instructor?"
He replies, "Not yet, sir."
I then stated "Well, until you are, I suggest drilling in a voice that can be understood by the platoon."
He gives me a simple "Yes, sir." and I return to the formation.
The rest of the day's drill went very smoothly
Since then I have yet to hear anyone tyring to use their Drill Instructor Voice.

When I was stationed on Guam, we got a new Section Leader....

High and tight haircut, uniform creases so sharp you could injure yourself on them.

First words out of his mouth at muster are; "My name is Petty Officer First Class somethingski (can't remember his exact name) and I just spent 4 years in Great Lakes"

From the back row, someone says "Hell it only took me 9 weeks to get through!"

Turned out to be a pretty decent guy once he loosened up.

I think the reason MIDN don't get NDSM for cruises is because no reservist gets NDSM for training time.
BTW, to my knowledge, there are no active duty NROTC midshipmen. There are A/D NROTC Officer Candidates.

NROTC mids on summer cruise = same as reservists pulling their couple weeks of AT time each year. Active - yes, but not considered "on active duty."

I'm with you on this one. I certainly have more than 1 but I guess it was about 4 or 5 years ago I just woke up and realized I liked the look of a clean shirt. During college I did so many color guards and such that I even got ruined to not wearing ribbons on my blues. For Alphas/Blues I still wear them because it completes the uniform, but for anything "less" I go slick whenever I can get away with it. Just one person's preference....

Amen. Besides...less ribbons = less crap they can hit you on during an inspection.

Do they have any ribbons for the Marine who spends the most time in a training command during wartime? I started college as a MECEP in August, 2001, and have had the privilege of "deploying" from Charleston, SC to Quantico (the first was a six-week "work up," and the second was a full six-month cruise...for which I have yet to get the cruise book that I involuntarily spent $35 on...), and have since been permanently deployed to FOB Whiting Field.

My poor grandkids are going to think that I was some kind of war hero or something - until they pull my service record, and discover that I was in training commands, "Freeing a Marine to Fight" for 5-6 years.

*seeing how long I can go without getting the GWOTSM*

my bf got the same award Gracin did a couple of months apart.

Difference? Gracin did 3 days at a base and sang the national anthem in that 3 days for a ceremony, basically he was promoting himself as a country pop star. My bf worked for a year to bring a department that was in shambles due to the last chief, a gunny who was fired for misconduct, running it to the ground up to be recognized as #1 in the Marine Corps.

Needless to say my bf didn't feel to 'proud' to receive it. He didn't wear it for over a year until he went to staff NCO academy and had to for inspection.

I've been trying to find an article some former Marine wrote about recommendations for the awards system. He proposed doing away with peacetime NAMs and NCMs, as well as the CAR and Strike/Flight Air Medal. A lot of good food for thought. I wanted to look it up again, but I can't find it, in spite of some active Google and Clusty attempts. I thought it was originally on Hackworth's site, but couldn't find it there. Anyone know of this article?
