After the 2nd pitch, I think you have to fake a hammy pull or something, right?
 
Really makes ya wonder… how long have we used the (essentially) same shaped bat? How long have the rules allowed different shapes to be made? Have different shapes been tried before? Why now?
 
WRT bats here's a pic of a bottle bat used by HOF'er Jimmie Foxx, with a description.

The MLB regulations are quite simple…

“MLB rules state that bats must be made of one piece of solid wood, with a maximum diameter of 2.61 inches at the thickest part and a maximum length of 42 inches.”

The new “torpedo” bats used mostly by the Yankees simply pull the thick part of the bat closer to the hands. I believe some MIT guy figured it out and the results are remarkable.

I feel your pain - my Atlanta Braves have the worst record in all of MLB at 0-6.

The Dodgers are a red hot 7-0, reminds me of the 1984 Detroit Tigers that started a blistering 35-5 enroute to winning the World Series.
 
The Braves finally notch a win, now 1-7.

Aaron Judge has already cranked out 6 homeruns. He will likely break his own American League record of 62 homeruns in a year.

Judge has 321 HR’s through his first 1000 games, exactly the same as Babe Ruth - quite the coincidence.
 
A fun April - the Cubs have the best offense in baseball, the White Sox are horrible, the Rockies horribler (made up a word to describe them this year.). Braves are in the cellar - but strangely only 2 games out of 2nd place.

And because its a beautiful Saturday, a clip from Moneyball - if you are a baseball fan, it is a must see movie:

 
Fantastic article in The Atlantic. Over-emphasis on velocity, not enough on control and placement. Although power pitchers get the glory, watching an artist like Greg Maddux carve up the strike zone or the hilarity of trying to hit a knuckleball from Tim Wakefield or the Niekro brothers is great baseball.

As a baseball enthusiast, I hate that Maddux gets remembered for the years he spent past his prime.

Maddux was a power pitcher in his prime. He came up throwing 92-94 mph (measured as the ball hit the catcher's mitt, unlike today where it's measured at release). He also had pinpoint control and insane movement, which is why he is a HOFer.

After the turn of the century he lost velo as he aged, and his ERA / peripheral stats went into the toilet.
