So I’ve just spoken with our RADM on deployment, and he did some quick check, and said that — if accepted, fleet candidates would be discharged from service upon completion of OCS, and then be commissioned as officers.
Can someone explain to me how it works?
Is it just a formality, or there is actual separation and later on (another date) commissioning?

Why didn’t you ask the Admiral who told you?

I don't know if you've reenlisted before, but it sounds like that process. Is the RADM onboard for deployment the appropriate person to ask this though? Aren't there any officers who went to OCS onboard?

No, I have not reenlisted before, nor have I been in a reenlistment ceremony yet, so I don't know the process. Someone else said it might be similar, so I preferred to ask here, in case someone knows.

The RADM was visiting us surprisingly, and since — when he answered someone else's question — the issue of O1 vs. O1E pay was mentioned, I wanted to know if in my case (being in service just shy of 3 years if selected), which category would apply to me. He asked the other officers around, one who is our OIC (and the only officer we have on DET), and they all were commissioned via other programs.
Had he not mentioned he got a DD-214 while he was answering my colleague, I wouldn't even have bothered asking anything on this matter.
