150 million big ones...

You know? All this stuff sounds like big $$$$ to one person, but it's about $0.30 for each American, after you account for all the privately funded portions. That's not even a pack of gum. We couldn't have saved the auto industry (or even the porn industry) for that $$.

While that may be true, I think the point the OP was trying to make was that 30 cents a person is still high. Hell, cut it in half to 15 cents, it's still 75 mil, and there's 75 mil that can be used for something else.

I have high hopes for the upcoming presidency, and I voted for McCain, but for someone who had a campaign promise of going line by line through the budget, starting off with 150 million for just his inauguration seems like he's already off on the wrong foot.

Gents,
With all due respect, in a few hours we must lead by example and exemplify that as officers or candidates, if you will, that we will serve our new C&C with both honor and respect. No need for someone to set a bad example on these threads.

Lonestar155,

With all due respect, your post is Bull Shit. No one has shown any disrespect to President-elect Obama in this thread.

There was no need for you to be a bad example by being a pompus ass.

What HAL said.

I was going to pile on, but I have been on a roll and have come off the top rope on too many people this weekend.

Somehow, I think any inauguration pre-1850 was probably greener than anything they could do now. They act like it's the second coming or something.

But did everyone know we were changing Presidents? I am sure the folks in the midwest did not know this until mid February. (Not related, just something funny I thought about)

Security is probably one of the biggest issues and the City has asked for help. That is where the bulk of that money is going to go. Think overtime, pay for all the law enforcement officers in D.C( both Federal and local)for the National Guard folks and the many other support agencies in D.C Transportation also becomes a mess. METRO is probably running on extended schedule. Alot of the 150 million is associated cost and not so much the direct spending. Afterall, the venue and the event is not really going to significantly change from the one done 4 years ago.
I wonder how you can limit the amount of people that come into the city.

Flip it over: Obama has a small inauguration without all the pomp and publicity, just friends, family, and the requisite officials. Total cost? About $50 in cabs, metro fees, and KFC catering.

What would we say then? Something about secret shadow government, lack of transparency, cheapskate CINC, make us look like the poor cousins to the world, etc.

I'm sure there's excess somewhere. I'll leave the paperclip counting to someone else. For the size of this event? Seems about right. Costs add up quickly, especially with scale.

Well he could just spend the 150 million on feeding everyone KFC then. :D

You want Presidential security? Fvck Clint Eastwood, I got your Presidential security right here:

The new Presidential minigun-equipped Suburban.

Maybe it's just me, but if I were the Secret Service guy crouched in the back of this thing, I'd be aching for someone to start some shit.

Trust me, Secret Service has purchased alot in the last 4 years. Presidents Bush had more threats on his life than any other President and I do not expect Obama to be any different.
I have actually seen the Chevy truck the with gatling gun. The SS guy behind the gun was looking mean as usual.

Actually, the POTUS is dining on quail and duck with a dried cherry chutney....not exactly KFC or Church's.

Hey, I got an idea to save money.. Serve congress and any elected/appointed officials in DC the same stuff we eat on the boat.. That's gotta be cheaper than foods I can't pronounce.

If I were elected President, it would be gyros, baklava, and belly dancers. Hot ones mind you, not the bored overweight housewife who wants a hobby.
