    Ifs

I belive the cut-off is if you have had a solo flight to your credit, therefore Private Pilots don't get to take part in IFS. For Pilots, IFS is 25 hours, you have to Solo by 15 hours. They also want you to do a "ghost" cross country where your civilian instructor sits there and doesn't say...

    NPQ'ed for NFO

He's at OCS now, so it's really a short walk down the road to NAMI. He's working on a re-test right now. We'll see how it works out.

    NROTC essays

You should always explain why you want to do it... explain who in your family or friends inspired you, etc. Explain why you want to be an officer.

I don't know how to put this, but I'm kind of a big deal.

    Not Pro-rec'd

Keep in mind that what we're taking about here are interviews, not specifically references or letters of recommendation. This is a scenario where an officer judges you, and it may not matter if they do not know you to begin with (although it couldn't hurt). They judge your bearing, your...

My interview was a commander of a reserve unit here at the airport. He was a Naval Aviator by training. He was not a recruiter type, but he may have had experience in selecting candidates previously. Hope that helps.

    Not Pro-rec'd

Agreed. I was turned down my first time. I had an interview with a Commander and got selected the next time. Oddly enough, he gave me good marks in presentation and composure, but moderate ratings overall (trying to be tough?). That seemed like it help put me over the top. Perhaps it was...

    Ernesto

Good thing this should be all cleared out by 09 September. I'm sure we'd receive some instructions on what to do if another one showed up? All the current models keep pushing it out to the east. Hopefully it keeps trending that way (and doesn't pull a U-turn).

    What to bring to OCS

Maybe I'm worried too much about attention to detail too early. I just realize that's a big thing, so I didn't want to get yelled at for having black undies or something.

    What to bring to OCS

I'm just looking for good gouge here. I was planning on buying some white ones, but I really wanted to know from someone with experience if that was important. Plus as jm74 says, it's very tough to find all white (no brand markings) underwear.

    What to bring to OCS

This is the first I've seen about needing white briefs. Is that true? In the handbook they pass out, it says to take a "Navy Type" blanket. What is that? I love how the OCS website says to not bring stuff the handbook says to bring.

Alight... that sounds good to me! Aerospec... I don't think it's on the left side of the E-learning menu... it's been a while since I logged on, but I think it's actually on the main windows, not the bar to the left.

    MAV vs UAV

I saw an article today that Lockheed is trying to pitch a pilotless F-35. In my opinion, that would just be a poor man's UCAV. You've already designed the plane to revolve around a pilot (including his g limits), with added weights and less optimized aerodynamics. Take out the pilot, you'd...

    EA-18G First Flight...

It's primarily a test aircraft. I am not sure if it goes to the fleet after testing or if it's a dedicated test aircraft. It's not painted up like one of the strike test aircraft at PAX River, however.

    College Activities

Kinda agree here... Putting that you were involved in activities in college shows the board you weren't just hanging out all the time. It shows that you were proactive and got involved in activities. Working through college shows a lot of responsibility and maturity, it shouldn't hurt you...

First flight of the P-8A Poseidon and all things related to transition

Wow, I just looked up the MK-48... that's a big torpedo. But the P-8 is designed to carry some pretty big stuff. Not that big (3400+ lbs), but that sure would be a sight. Imagine carrying 2 of those things under each wing!
  23. STLEngineer

Don't know what options are available to me, due to slight problem.

Agreed on the NROTC front. I am more familiar with AFROTC, but you could join even after your freshman year (even later under some circumstances). You'll pick up everything quickly. Just make sure the school you're going to has NROTC if you're truly interested.

    Dental Braces

Either my recruiter or the MEPS doctor said that Have Braces = No Navy.... something about the Navy doesn't have orthodontists, so if you have braces, they'll have to be off before you get any slot in the Navy.

First flight of the P-8A Poseidon and all things related to transition

Right, they got similar efficiency without the same icing concerns with the raked wingtip. Aeroelastic effects on that commercial 8-foot winglet have to be horrible when it get's iced up.

First flight of the P-8A Poseidon and all things related to transition

Believe it's got a -900ish wing on it (greater span?). Some guys here in St. Louis are doing that design, but I can't be sure. Part of Boeing's pitch on it was that it could be integrated into the current 737 line, saving the trip to Witchita to perform mods like they're doing with the KC-767.

First flight of the P-8A Poseidon and all things related to transition

All I know is Lockheed (who also makes the C-130) put an upgraded P-3 in the final competition. Pretty sure it's the real deal. I recall someone before posting that there will be about 180 of them made. Boeing in Renton, WA is hiring a TON of people to work on it. So many that I (in St. Louis)...

My recruiter gave me some direct deposit forms for the bank to fill out. I did that and returned them to him. I guess he's going to give me a packet of stuff to take to OCS, so I don't have to piece it together myself.

    B1 Gear up

True, it does look like it's right under the nose, now that I look at it. The gear's a little further back. Then why all the concrete dust when the doors are opened?
  31. STLEngineer

    B1 Gear up

The divot underneath is in a very small area, and you can see where the landing gear doors scraped the concrete. The pic with the gear coming out and the doors flying open shows a lot of debris coming out (like it was trapped), making me thing the gear was retracted in and the doors scraped up...

First flight of the P-8A Poseidon and all things related to transition

At least I didn't start it this time. However, in the realm of money saving, it's much cheaper than a brand new aircraft (a no brainer). Also, it will be integrated in the production line with the rest of the 737s for the most part. As I recall, it's competitor was an upgraded P-3, so the...

    B1 Gear up

Edit: Regarding the B-1 Wow, that's quite a divot it dug in the runway... You think they'd have some logic built into the system that if there was weight on the wheels that they wouldn't retract like that.

    The Great Growler Gallery

The electronics changes and slight changes to the wing tips to carry the ALQ-218 may make it enough of a change to call it a "G" (but I don't think it is). It is still less of a change to the aircraft and systems than the A-C change was, but it is semantics any way you look at it. There's...

    The Great Growler Gallery

Stating that an aircraft is new simply because it is used in a different way and carries new electronics is false. It is nearly the exact same airplane coming out of the exact same production line, just with some different boxes. How is saying that the aircraft is the same disrespeting the...

    The Great Growler Gallery

Every post I see is you make is only about complaining about someone else's post and having to be right all the time. That doesn't get old at all. It is exactly what I said... arbitrary. The Navy is restricting the use of the "G" in a certain way, but the aircraft and airframe still has the...

    The Great Growler Gallery

False analogy or not, it is still an arbitrary distinction between the F/G. The only thing that's not reconfigurable on the shocker is the wing tip pods. Otherwise it could be utilized exactly like an E/F on stations 2-10 (probably even for 5-wet). How you use an asset or define it in NATOPS...

    The Great Growler Gallery

I can't give specifics, but the airframe is currently being tested to higher gross weights to accomidate the "G". CVS testing is ongoing at PAX River, MD on their catapult and arrestment gear (that's where I am as I type this).

    The Great Growler Gallery

My point is why "roll out" something that's been "rolled out" before. It's not technically ready for service either, as it's the first of the "full-up G" test aircraft. Was the F/A-18E/F ready to go when E-1 or F-1 rolled off? It was the first of many test aircraft, too. Whever the 5 wet...

It's the F/A-18F airframe with new electronics/pods to carry. No real structural changes. So basically it's an "F" with new pods and a few more gadgets.

Purchasing/selling home? This site may help.

Data on that site isn't entirely accurate. My house is 3 bedroom 2 or 3 bath (if you count the one in the basement). Zillow says it's 4/3. It also says I bought it for a good 5K less than I did. But at least it's a start.
