Flying for Navy, Marines or Air Force?

The real answer??... Doesn't matter. Because once you are "done" with whichever Service you choose,... you can apply to the U-2 Program.... ... and then life is good.

    Gloves

My perception is that it's a "cultural" thing. I see it all time when I deal with Navy/Marine aviators, but very, very rare in the USAF... to include USAF pilots that do a lot of "button pushing". They don't have a switchology problem with gloves on, probably the way that Dilbert123 and his...

    OSH Heritage Flight

I have flown it 7 times, and it is a great performer,... much more than the L-39, which I also like. The only downside is that it is built for shorter pilots. I'm only 5'10", and I wish I could push the pedals further forward. It is the best private jet I've ever flown.

    OSH Heritage Flight

It's "Collings", not "Collins". Unfortunately, they managed to jettison the F-4's rear canopy on Thursday. The A-4's were a hit, as were the other jets. I also got to fly in the back of the Alpha Jet. Look for pics coming up in Warbird Digest.

    Skyfest 2010 Fairchild AFB

The Patriots were going to headline as the jet team, and about a month ago, Fairchild cancelled them due to some sort of budget shortfall.

Biggest shock of getting back into a light aircraft?

PhrogPilot! Frank! "Yolk"??!! Are you guys "egg" heads???? :icon_tong Well, don't shoot until you see the "whites" of their eyes in the coqpit! I keed, I keed!!!

Biggest shock of getting back into a light aircraft?

Pitfalls? They will check you out before you know how to handle a number of malfunctions. Don't get complacent. Study a little.

    Service Swap?

#2 is on the way. And, although not fast, the jet will embarrass you slowly. I'd bet it's the fastest slow jet in the USAF. :icon_wink

    Service Swap?

I know two U-2 pilots that went did it. One to Prowlers (Crip), the other to the T-45 (Horny, who is on this site).

Fidelity up, Obedience Down: Pothead kicked off Football Team

One man's opinion. I'm not an Academy grad, and many of you are... but I'm very suspect (probably unfairly) of anyone who's been an English professor at the Academy for 23 years, and whose subjects range from "aesthetics to cross-cultural perceptions, to dance" and who has never served with...

  18. HuggyU2

Parts Incorporated in a Flight Suit

Guns, knives, flashlights, shark repellant, PRC-112, iodine tablets,... whatever. Typical Navy/Marine loadout-of-pain. In the USAF, we carry a pencil, spork (spoon/fork thingy) in the slot next to the pencil (in lieu of the pen), and a cell phone. Done. If I bailout (sorry,... "eject"), I call...

This post reflects how long I've been away from active & reserve duty

The "dress cover". Yet another "cultural" difference between the Services,at least from my view as a non-flag officer. Whereas you'll see dress cover/"wheel cap" in the Navy and Marines, you won't see it near as much in the USAF, as it is not a popular choice. I suppose we like wearing that...

    Madera CA Airshow 5-22-2010

I just got home and checked AW for the first time since Thursday. CAMike, thanks for the kudos. It was my first time announcing a two-day show. My voice held out... just barely. And thanks for the pics. About 6-7 Mustangs, a P-40E, a Sea Fury, Yak-11, four B-25's, four Texans, two T-28's...

    Nonunion of Facial Fracture

Did you ever see "Speed and Angels"? That guy got shot in the face with a .40 hollow point, and now he's a Hornet IP. Certainly different issues, but my point is "keep the faith, it can be done".

I spoke to their static display POC, and they are looking for statics. Two day show with the Thunderbirds. Other acts are being worked. If interested, contact jodi.lewis <at> navy.mil. I'm thinkin' 3-4 days TDY/TAD on the SoCal coast... could be worse.

"Pilots Pull Rank, Declare Emergency At JFK (With Audio)"

From what I've seen,... and from what I've heard of how the JFK controllers can be,... good on the pilot for not allowing "their problem" to become "his problem". Maybe, if it happened more often, we wouldn't see aircraft slide off the end of a very short, snow covered runway, in a tailwind and...

The Monster COD thread (homage to the C-2A Greyhound)

I had 3 C-2's taxi with us yesterday at NASNI. "Password" was the callsign. Are those locally based C-2s? Also, we tried to get out to San Nicolas Island for some patterns, but Beaver completely turned us away. Is it generally difficult to get out to there?

Million Air HOU and FYV have mil contract

Great news, especially for you Training Command folks in Texas and Vance: The Million Air FBO's at Hobby and Fayetteville Arkansas just got the military servicing/fueling contract. Yes, EFD is close by, but give HOU a shot. We went through Hobby back in Feb, and it is top shelf: good flight...

    UAL + US Air = ???

The UAL ALPA MEC is vehemently denying that there is any evidence that these negotiations are happening. Can't wait to talk to my new next door neighbor: he's one of the bottom 5 pilots at USAirways. So.... if it did happen... I wonder if he or I will have better seniority...

    Nice article on the SR-71

Brian's quite an interesting guy. There's a great story out there about his "slowest speed" in the Sled. Look it up.... it's a good read. Here's another good one he did right after 9/11. It's become very famous: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/570378/posts

Yuma's not he hot spot with Airwarriors, it seems. The leadership pulled my T-38, so I'm taking leave and heading down Thursday, so I'll still be there. I'll be helping out Bill Cornick and Spencer Suderman, plus The Patriots, and generally having a good time.

    Navy vs Air Force

Do you like chocolate or vanilla? Who cares,... it's up to you. Obviously there is no "right answer" from any of us. As for the Bob Norris letter above, remember that during your 3 day liberty in Singaport, I'm on a 60 day deployment to Cyprus or Korea, and enjoying my time off, after I RTB...

The perennial Navy vs AF flight school smackdown (split from the "What %" article)

Unfortantely, only one T-1 is still able to fly. A friend of mine in Phoenix has it, but it has not flown in a few years due to a cracked windscreen. Just spoke to him last week, and he's going to have one fabricated, and get her flying again. As for Boeing, yes they do operate a T-33 for...

    Sully retires ...

... from an AF ISR perspective,... the EP-3 incident gets discussed. I'm certainly not "in the know", but it seems there was little or no CONOPS written for these missions. Foul. It's also good that EP-3 crews attend SV-83 "survival" at Fairchild AFB now. It sounds like Osborne and company...

    Sully retires ...

Before Hacker sees this and chimes in, I'll tell you that there is a plethora of criticism in the fighter world on Scott... not just how he handled the shootdown rescue, but in how he handled earlier flying situations, and how he handled things in his personal life after the event.

Which makes me wonder how all those pilots that have posted here, and have told us how they screwed it up and got sat down for such "petty" stuff, weren't able to follow some basic ROE,... you know, the "easy stuff". Just follow the rules. Wow.... what a haze that was. I'm surprised I made it...

    Something missing from NAS Kingsville...

It was an A-4C, wasn't it? Anyone know the BUNO? Word on the street (and that's the Air Force street) is that the replacement jet will be the former Blues Boss jet.

A pilot's life... HAL / A4s... you guys want to weigh in on this one?

Age 60 rule is now Age 65 rule. This will induce some changes. For example, pilot will probably die of a heart attack on his walkaround at age 64 1/2. No smile on his face.

Coast Guard discontinuing LORAN navid program

That's one of the problems... just ask the T-43 crew that flew Sec of Commerce Ron Brown into Croatia. T-38A has no GPS, but when we leave the local area we carry a Garmin 296/396 that the squadron bought.

Radials or Jets, that is the question....

Good article, but it implies that "jets" and "taildraggers" are mutually exclusive. Here's another site that can help you build tailwheel time: http://www.beale.af.mil/shared/media/document/AFD-090812-074.doc
