Hippie civilian off season, Marine candidate during summer. Question?

I had a beard and a fro in college. I shaved the beard for OCS, but kept the fro (for a day or two).

    Which way is she spinning?

FINALLY got her to go both ways. She REALLY did not want to go counter-clockwise for me.

Hippie civilian off season, Marine candidate during summer. Question?

I wouldn't "inform" your OSO that you are a civilian and, thus, not required to abide by strict grooming standards unless you were 100% sure that was the case. Don't really think you've done anything wrong, though. Still, I'd shave it off if he asks you to. I don't know how it works for...

Clockwise when viewed from above...can't see the counter-clockwise at all.

Picked up as pilot, now worried about my eyes!

Yeah, it just so happens that all of my bad vision comes from astigmatism, and I guess the axis it lines up on allows me to pass the letter test. I've also never failed the depth perception test, and I probably shouldn't be able to pass that with over 1.00 astigmatism. So, although cases like...

Picked up as pilot, now worried about my eyes!

I was NPQd for pilot at OCS and transferred to FO. My case is pretty rare, though, as far as I know.

Picked up as pilot, now worried about my eyes!

This is probably true for most cases, but keep in mind that there are also refractive limits. My vision is between 20/30 and 20/40 (depends on the day), but it's all astigmatism which is what got me. There's a link to the medical requirements somewhere around this site, they have all the...

    Pre-commissioning Loan USAA

I am not a super-savvy finance dude, but I think: higher interest loan for longer term < lower interest loan for shorter term. You could also always find an investment that pays more than 2% interest and just use it in that capacity.
  16. Kickflip89

    Pre-commissioning Loan USAA

If you can delay getting the loan, I'd wait until after you are commissioned, or while you are a candio. They will either need a copy of your orders to OCS, which you won't receive until a week or two before you go, or a letter from your CO once you're active duty. As others have stated, your...

    Flat Feet

Buy motion control running shoes. I would suggest these, they saved my legs at OCS. EDIT - the motion control rec is because that's what flat-footed people usually need. Best thing to do is go to a running shoe store and have them analyze your pronation on a treadmill.

Wow, that sucks. I can understand if someone does something really stupid like show up wearing piercings, etc....but how did they find out someone showed up to muster drunk? I'm not condoning drinking before muster, but where were this dude's buddies? You take care of him / volunteer for...

    Insider Scoop on Navy OCS

People DOR for all kinds of reasons. In some cases, it's a good decision. In any event, I don't think DORing from OCS is a significant enough of a "black mark" to erase the years of enlisted service needed to make chief. Let's be honest. An officer candidate doesn't REALLY do anything to...
  25. Kickflip89

What happens to an OCS drop out?

I was NPQd for pilot at OCS and was allowed to redesignate to FO, so I'm guessing they'd let a commissioned officer resesignate. Of course, that was WAAAAY Back in August of 07, so who knows.

GUSTAV: Massive Evil Hurricane of Death! Panic!

Agreed...Obviously Fay is not gonna f**k stuff up too bad. Why do they even name hurricanes IVAN or GUSTAV? Don't they realize those hurricanes aren't gonna screw around? Thank God we'll probably never get into the Ts or we could see a Hurricane Trogdor. That would coincide with the end of...

    Insider Scoop on Navy OCS

Although I know nothing of earning respect from other sailors yet, I'm gonna guess that it is easier for a chief who dropped out of OCS than an ENS who didn't.

    sTUPID qUESTIONS aBOUT ocs

Safest thing to do is to go down until you are almost touching the deck. If you think you might have trouble getting 50-60 push-ups doing this, then just do 90 degrees. I passed the IN-PFA, was rolled by the black ninja on Thursday of indoc week, got considerably stronger after 3 weeks in H...

    sTUPID qUESTIONS aBOUT ocs

All you need for the IN-PFA is a sat-med...but you'll never get that if you can't get a good low in all categories before OCS. If you can't get a good low in push-ups, for instance, your chances of getting zero'd out for the IN-PFA are high. In fact, I would say the number one cause of PFA...

    Daily Show: Marines in Berkeley

Pretty sure this is not accurate. You can read between the lines and make a case for this statement, but he's never said anything like, "Military options are off the table with Iran," as far as I know. Furthermore, I could care less about raising / lowering taxes. If one of the candidates...

I flew my first Solo today!

On a side note, since I think I remember badger saying he flew good ole 98960 at Mobile Downtown (as did I): I had my checkride today for FO contacts and we went to...Mobile Downtown, where (gasp) 98960 had a dude soloing in the pattern. That was kind of a cool experience...kind of like a...

    NSS changes as of 04AUG08

We were briefed by STUCON, who had the info from CNATRA, and I saw the new equations. TGI is being replaced by NMU. I don't remember SEEING that the sample size would be 60, but I asked STUCON guy about it, and he explained to me that CNATRA figured out they could get a wider distribution if...

  36. Kickflip89

    NSS changes as of 04AUG08

No, because your all your scores are based on the squadron average from the past 60 people to go through your squadron. So, if you MIF everything and score a 1.0 you could be well below average, or you could be just plain average. "Good" and "Bad" are all determined by how your squadron...

You could have heard a pin drop

You may be a history/poli sci major at Columbia, but that's a little bit of a trollish remark from someone with only 7 posts. I'm sure you didn't mean it that way, though :) Anyway, it sounded like he was saying we aren't asking for any more ground from Afghanistan than enough to bury our dead.
  40. Kickflip89

    NSS changes as of 04AUG08

True, the only thing that changed is the sample size is smaller and NMU is replacing TGI.
  41. Kickflip89

    NSS changes as of 04AUG08

    1) I wouldn't allow something like NSS to get in the way of helping out a fellow STUD...and anyone who would is a douche. Now, I might not help out someone because they are a jerk, but that would be regardless of how well they were doing :) 2) What I took away from the e-mail with our PAS...

You could have heard a pin drop

those are pretty good...although, to be fair, we must have lost a lot of people in the Mexican American war .
  43. Kickflip89

    NSS changes as of 04AUG08

Because I am slightly bored I will nerd it up even more. The whole system is based on a normal distribution of scores, or a bell curve. They take the last 60 people who went through in your squadron and make a pretty curve that looks like this: Where σ (sigma) is the standard deviation, which...
  44. Kickflip89

    NSS changes as of 04AUG08

What this means is that you will be given a baseline score of 50 just for showing up. Your PAS will go up if your score is better than average or your number of unsats / marginals is lower than average, and vice versa if opposite. How much better / worse your PAS or NSS is than 50 depends on...

BDCP = OCS...you just get paid while you are in college with BDCP, but will have to go enlisted if you DOR from OCS.

    Housing for IFS

You really only have two options. 1) Split the distance between Whiting and Pcola if you have follow on orders 2) Get a place near base and then move when you go to Primary. Commute to mobile is not bad, it's only about an hour and is pretty easy driving.
