VFR Flight Plan Route of Flight

It sure is. From what you all have said, I take it that it is acceptable to say on the flight plan that I file "NGP direct PEQ" and then just plan whatever checkpoints I want as long as they get me where I want to go.

VFR Flight Plan Route of Flight

I'm leaving on my cross country tomorrow, and have run into a question regarding the route of flight for a VFR flight plan. AIM states that the route of flight should be designated using navaids and airways. I'm flying from Corpus to Pecos, TX, to Sedona, AZ for my day visual navigation hops...

    Mameluke Sword

I imagine that the serial number they are referring to is the Uniform Board certification number. Several vendors who sell their swords online have the certification number from the uniform board. You are absolutely correct that you do not want to purchase a sword without the certification...

    Mameluke Sword

As far as the "sword inspection" goes, it was pretty much non-existant for my company. The only thing I can remember that even approached an inspection was a Sgt telling me my sword was too long, and then another Sgt telling me it was too short. I think the Marine Shop makes a much bigger deal...

    Smith & Wesson??? "new" M&p??

I have a model 59 that I inherited unfired. From day one I was told it wasn't anything special, that the Hi Power was better, yadda yadda yadda..... But, having shot a few different SIG's, Kimber 1911's, Colt 1911's, Hi Power's a Springfield XD, etc., I have yet to find a pistol that I can...

Tips for living in the field...

Your best bet is probably to ask guys who've done it. Camping, backpacking, or survival books might provide some info, but a lot of that stuff isn't applicable to what we do. My biggies: Always have dry clothes to sleep in, even if it means wearing the same stuff during the day for...

    Helicopter Pilot

Asthma is generally a no go. Childhood "asthma" could be reactive airway disease. RAD commonly disappears with no reoccurances as you grow older. No part of any medical questionaire says anything about reactive airway disease. My personal opinion is that if you don't use any medication for...

    Helicopter Pilot

Anthropometrics are the measurements of your body, essentially. Things such as elbow to tip of fingers, butt to knee, length of leg fully extended, max reach, etc. Because of your anthro measurements you may be suitable for some platforms and not others. For example, your butt to knee...

    Balloon pilot?

I believe that they are currently using tethered balloons for customs/border protection. I've seen a restricted area on a chart that referred to cables extending to 12,000 or 15,000 feet for a radar balloon right along the Texas border. This was about 5 or 6 years ago, though, so my memory...

    MCMAP Mandatory Training Mega Thread

This past spring they (MATSG-21) were running MCMAP courses almost continuously. The class would kick off at 0600 and run until 0900 or so. 3 weeks of training for a grey or green belt, 4 weeks for a brown belt. It's possible things have changed, but you ought to at least be able to get one...

    Computer games- bad on eyes?

In my personal experience, sitting in front of the computer too much can put a lot of strain on your eyes. When I was in Pensacola waiting to class up for API, I was spending maybe 3-4 hours a day in front of the computer. I noticed that I was having a harder time focusing on some things, and...

    Lineal Control Number

That's interesting. I guess date of rank trumps other considerations in determining lineal numbers, but that really seams to negate the point of using TBS standing. I'm under the impression that if a Delta company Lt and a Fox company Lt had the same date of rank, the Delta Co. Lt would have a...

    Lineal Control Number

I was looking at the July '06 blue book, and noticed that a trend I started watching last year hasn't changed. I realize that lineal standing won't (from what I've been told) make a differance until its time for selection to Captain, but I want to make sure this isn't an issue I need to start...

    Uh-Oh

The sad fact is, it isn't the first time this has happened either. While I was there we had a female in my company that was caught in the act with another mid. He claimed consensual, she claimed rape. The rape could never be proved, but sex in the hall is a no-no, so guess what? She stayed...

API Coming Soon To a Theater Near You

Johnny B made a whole lot of videos like that for us at TBS. How on earth he found the time to make them is beyond me. Apparently his TBS ones are going to be distributed to recruiters unofficially due to music copyright issues. The CO of TBS liked the movies so much he ordered copies made...

Those are good points. In light of viewing it from that angle, I'd agree with stating the full term of employment.

    EPSQ question

I would be inclined to go with the 6 month option. The EPSQ isn't so much about looking good, as it is about not looking bad. They are essentially trying to determine if you are likely to hand sensitive material off to somebody who doesn't deserve it. Indebtedness (is that a word?), foreign...

At the Risk of Sounding Stupid...

MATSG-21 (Marine Aviation Training Support Group) is the parent command for all Marines at NAS Pensacola. USMC NFO's are classing up quickly, only about a 3-4 week wait. Pilots have a 5-6 month wait right now, but it depends a lot on what company you go through TBS with. HA...

I read through the first half of aero, and the weather pub before I started. I felt like it made it easier to roll into the swing of things once class started. The best advice I ever got in this department was from a Major when I was having a hard time deciding which community I wanted to be a part of. He basically said it's all about culture fit. Whether Navy or Marine, you are incurring a long obligation, so you'd better go where you fit in the...

Individual Augmentee (IA) info & questions

Interestingy enough, deployments to OIF and/or OEF have a positive intitial effect on USMC personnel retention. Someone from MCCDC in Quantico, in response to a question about op tempo and retention, told us that enlisted retention peaks after one deployment, and drops slightly after two. I...

Biking to increase endurance? Lower run?

I'll jump on the bandwagon here. When I was running about 50 miles a week, my 1.5 mile time was right around 7:45. Add our 3 scores and divide by 3??

looks like that previous info was out of date. The OPNAVINST 6110.1H, which is the most recent document I could find (15 AUG 05) says "Overall score is category level performance corresponding to the average of points accumulated on PRT events." - an odious term used by newspapers and girlfriends.
  32. gtxc2001

Add our 3 scores and divide by 3??

The way I read the policy was that your overall was equal to your lowest individual event, assuming you are talking about the PRT. However, being a PFT type of guy, somebody else might have better gouge.

    Marine Corps NFO information

esmarine, USMC NFO is, in my opinion, a pretty sweet deal, and that's from an SNA. The paperwork I saw requires a 72 month commitment after you receive your wings, which considering how fast Marine NFO are moving through the pipe down here, probably relates to about an eight year commitment...

    flight slots at TBS?

Going through with Delta Co. '05 that policy had changed. The word given to us both at USNA and TBS was that the option of dropping flight contracts was no longer considered kosher. From what I've been able to hunt up, viper was the name assigned to the project by General Dynamics during development. I was also under the impression from an F-16 demonstration I once saw, that Viper is the favored name within NATO but I don't know how true that is.

    Fraternization

Generally, I would say that an offer that is made to an entire unit is not considered frat. For example, it is generally understood (at least in the circles that I have been floating in) that it would be acceptable for a division officer to invite his/her entire division to a party, since it...

"I know more about war than troops."

    VSTOL JSF vs. Conventional JSF

I don't think the F-35B will go under. The senior Marine leadership is quite set on it. My girlfriend's dad recently retired as the Program Executive Officer for Aircraft Carriers, and the Marines were, according to him, on the offensive when it comes to the JSF. Their argument is that you...
