FYI: USMC Captain Recognition Bonus (MarAdmin 611/08)

Why are you even thinking of taking this bonus as a pilot? It makes no sense. You will delay getting a $20K bonus for a year to get $4K now. Barring some serious investing brilliance, you're never going to make it up. The only reason to take it is if you are already getting out anyway (for...

FYI: USMC Captain Recognition Bonus (MarAdmin 611/08)

All of my non-pilot Captains are taking it. They seem pretty happy about it, too. Personally, I lost more in taxes on my bonus than this one is worth. Kind of like the chopper bonus from a few years ago. What was it? 7K? Seems about right. Smiles, of course.

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

We don't spend all that much time doing air to air. Probably less than 10% of our hours, but that varies from squadron to squadron depending on the emphasis of the CO. That said, it is probably too much time anyway. We have people for that sort of thing....i.e. the USAF. The probe tip, when...

FYI: USMC Captain Recognition Bonus (MarAdmin 611/08)

AV-8B FRS students are on there as well (7507), not that they'll be eligible (I don't think). If you're a pilot, you're going to be better off waiting on the pilot bonus. If you're a ground MOS (and are planning to stick around anyway), then go for it. There probably won't be a better deal...

3300 Sqft Yuma House with Pool/Hot Tub/Bar/Pool Table - Roommates Needed

What does TS Cond II have to do with anything? Whether or not I shoot a PAR is based on the ceiling/vis, not TS Cond. Your wingman is an idiot (although you already knew that). Anyway.....back to TBones house and roomate options.

3300 Sqft Yuma House with Pool/Hot Tub/Bar/Pool Table - Roommates Needed

San Diego has perfect weather? I guess so, if you like shooting PARs through the marine layer half of the year. The rest of it is correct. Yuma may lack many things, but great flying weather isn't one of them.

    HeliFOs

Do P-3/E-2 NFOs have instrument ratings? If so, how does that work? I understand what an ECMO or WSO does in the goo (I think....don't have one), but the P-3/E-2 guys can't really see outside or access the flight instruments (or can they?).

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

    1. No. When they are IFR....then "no" again. 2. Yes and no. If your NATOPs has a higher operating speed for safety of flight, then you can use that. Nobody expects you to bring a division of jets into the break at 250 knots. 550? Maybe not such a great idea at LAX. At NYL/NJK.....bring it...

F-35B/C Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter)

Yes. The cry of uproar is led mostly by those that have never even used the gun that they have. Is it a valuable weapon? Sure. Is it a death blow not to have one? No. The main argument against the external gun pod is the compromise of stealth and drag. Neither of which is a huge obstacle...

    VFR Stamp -- Urban Myth?

F-35B/C Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter)

The F-35B sim is actually easy to fly if you think about landing differently. When I flew it, I had the same issues that other Harrier guys did in V/STOL. If you think like a Harrier (in terms of control inputs) it's all ass backwards. If you think like conventional flying, it's very, very...

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

Checkrides (NATOPS/Inst) in the Harrier are almost always done in the sim. When one isn't available, we chase the guy getting the ride. I've done my NATOPS in combat, such that it was. The squadron just made sure that my wingman was a checker. Real (i.e. mission quals) checkrides (section...

Honestly, I was more worried about them shooting me down than the Iraqis after about day 2 of the war. The Iraqis couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with a banjo. The patriots just don't miss. That's great as long as they know what they're shooting at.

You were a Corporal of Marines. Whole different animal than just an "E-4". I never use paygrades to describe Marines unless it's a situation like here where there were folks from all of the services. Just a pet peeve of mine. When a Marine says "I'm an E-6", he'll get a "Bullshit. You are...

Age limit approaching fast- Am I done for a Naval Aviation career?

From what I saw at AOCS (much harder program.....amen), it has more to do with paygrade than rank interms of DORs and priors. The ones E-1 to E-3 and E-6 and above did fine. The E-4 and E-5 group DOR'd at a much higher rate. We had several from all three groups in my class, including a...

I'd have to answer "I don't care" with the caveat that I'd prefer them there as long as they don't get in the way or delay the evolution.
