Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

While I agree with you, can you seriously say that in today's military, especially when events like this are such big news?

Is your cockpit bright enough with instrument lights to not need any other light source, or are you an old school grimes light guy?

Summer weight vs Winter weight NOMEX

To avoid a headache on yours and your pr's part, if you put a knife on your vest that isn't authorized by NAVAIR or in the SOASI program you will technically have to fly with an additional, authorized, knife to put your vest in a RFI status. If you're down with flying with two knives go for it...

    Night Vision Pen

Turn your kneeboard around where the spring clip is on the bottom. That way you can fold the paper down vice up and the pen pocket will be to the rear. I do that with mine, I prefer how it keeps the paper better organized. Something that hasn't been mentioned here is what can be seen from...

Summer weight vs Winter weight NOMEX

In their defense, those usually come out of different pots of money. Case in point, my old squadron was given money from the wing earmarked specifically for flatscreens. When we asked if we could forgo the tv and buy stuff we actually wanted, no dice.

Summer weight vs Winter weight NOMEX

You could convince your sk's to buy you a Massif fleece, warm and breathes better than the nomex.

    Serious Question!!!

I don't understand how you riding as the pax in a car can result in you having an ARI. If you weren't driving, you were not underage, and you weren't being an asshole to the cops that busted your buddy, what did you do to get tossed in the drunk tank? That said, I have heard of cops letting...

Wanting aviation but selected for submarines / nuke

Only on paper. I knew guys of the engineering flavor that were really smart that were told to go to the interview. Once there they didn't fair so well. Whether they sucked or had selective forgetfulness is debateable, but either way they didn't have a say in at least going to the interview.

Wanting aviation but selected for submarines / nuke

From an Academy perspective, you can be made to go to the NUPOC interview but they can't force you to pass it. Just saying.

    O4 List

I had three awesome skippers in a row in my last squadron (HS). All of them were awesome dudes and having gotten to know them and their career paths shows that it doesn't necessarily have to be the Suckistan jobs to make CO and they epitomized what good leaders are. What it also showed me is...

    O4 List

I would love to make Skipper but one has to be realistic. I'm going to take orders that I love and do my best at them (has been working so far) and if I ultimately make Skipper then that's awesome. What I'm not going to do is take orders as the Porta-Potty Officer in Suckistan just because it...

    O4 List

Here's a statistic that isn't really publicized. From starting as an ensign you have a 49% chance to make O-5, you have a 24% chance of making Skipper. So, instead of killing yourself to make Skipper, do what is necessary to make O-5. The retirements are exactly the same.

Admiral McRaven on bin Laden raid

Yes. They aren't common and you have to be a good shooter. You earn EIC (excellence in competition) points (legs) in various matches throughout the year. Some are the east and west coast coast matches, followed by All-Navy matches, and Camp Perry, to name the more common ones. You get a...

Things my IP told me that may or may not be true...

HS Jax was my 10 or HS Jax was my 10th or 11th choice, can't remember which, but I quality spreaded too (2 out of roughly 30ish). Turns out I really loved Jax.

Things my IP told me that may or may not be true...

Interesting, I've never heard that observation before (caveated with the people who just hated east coast in general).

Why do I suck (with some iron sights)?

The basics are require but if you shoot cross eye then you put side load/strain on the rifle. The only pressure on the grip and trigger needs to be straight to the rear and shooting cross eye it is almost impossible to have only rearward pressure.
  19. insanebikerboy

Why do I suck (with some iron sights)?

Switch to shooting lefthanded on the rifle. That is the only answer if you actually want to shoot the rifle well, otherwise you'll just keep chasing your tail.

    The Boat School Boys

You know, the interesting thing is that ROTC scholarship grads are the least likely to stay in the military when compared to academy, ROTC non-scholarship, and OCS commissions. That has absolutely nothing to do with performance, but it is an interesting retention factoid.

    FedEx Application Window Open

Just so I'm understanding, is A time where you actually sign for the aircraft or is it FPT logged in our logbooks? That said, I left with about 1000 hours total and a little over 300 signing for the helo.

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

That's pretty freaking sad, no one, even the Skipper, is so vitally important that a squadron can't function for four days with them gone. Not to mention it's over a weekend.

Are individual awards getting watered down (ie a NAM for a Det)?

Not when you consider the threat level between the two. I'll be the first to admit that I am biased but I have a difficult time accepting that the threat level of an E-2 cruising along in a racetrack pattern on the Boulevard is exposed to the same risks as a helo at 150 feet getting rpg's and...

Are individual awards getting watered down (ie a NAM for a Det)?

Here's my beef, I put in a few of my aircrewmen for an individual action air medal for what we did on cruise against pirates (anyone remember the Quest, not to mention a few other things I can't mention), but they didn't get approved and yet guys doing circles at 30,000 feet came home with at...

    Golf in Pensacola

I played at a course called Tanglewood in Milton a lot. It was literally two miles away and between me and work so I'd play it often. It was fairly cheap and a decent course, nothing to write home about, but it was kind of tucked away and really easy to play as a single and not get rushed.

    Carry Weapon Capacity

I have an extremely difficult time believing that reloading and some sort of protracted gun battle in a CCW situation is what would really happen. If you need more than what you can carry in a single magazine you are in a world of pain far beyond what you can cover in a CCW situation. That...

Another helo vs the world thread (moved from helmets)

Although I think that's a pretty decent idea, that would really confound the "what percent get jets" question, because now how does the Navy delineate who goes where for what platform? Could you imagine the heartburn and wanking from studs if it were based off of just API grades or whatever!
  41. insanebikerboy

Another helo vs the world thread (moved from helmets)

Daytime version of the night HUD. I have no idea if there is any plan to integrate any tracking into either the day or night HUD.
  42. insanebikerboy

Another helo vs the world thread (moved from helmets)

Both are wrong, just close your eyes on short final and listen to the crewman, when he says you're in the circle, bottom the collective. 60% of the time, it works all the time :)
  43. insanebikerboy

Another helo vs the world thread (moved from helmets)

We were given the prototype to use and evaluate. They have since gone back to the manufacturer, I believe the production one is going to be much slimmer.

Another helo vs the world thread (moved from helmets)

I think it got buried in an earlier post but the Day HUD is pretty sweet. My only gripe is the way it's set up now it can only be worn over the left eye. I personally prefer it on the right side of my helmet. The new model is basically a disc that fits over the end of the goggles. It's not...

Another helo vs the world thread (moved from helmets)

I think it's nice to have the weapon but short of getting tens of thousands of rounds to shoot through it per pilot, I highly doubt the CAG would seriously consider employing it. It's the same reason that you don't see helos booming around with Hellfire all the time.
  47. insanebikerboy

Another helo vs the world thread (moved from helmets)

No kidding? Big Navy is actually going to pony up the dough to fund the ammo NCEA to shoot this thing? Funny, seems to me HAL back in the day was pretty good at doing that, too bad those capabilities got shelved back when the Huey went away in the Navy.
  48. insanebikerboy

    Good idea or not?

Is disagreement equal or synonymous with discrimination though? Religion and sexual orientation are sets of moral beliefs and not everyone has the same moral code, so does disagreeing with one or the other necessarily mean you are automatically discriminating against them?
