    Disassociated Sea Tour

Another way, get onto FLTMPS and search all of the billets for 1310 that have a PRD around your time frame. Make the window open from a month or two before and three months after. Call your detailer and ask to take a billete that seems interesting to you.

    Staffs and their usefulness

Isn't that exactly the point? Two staffs in the Pacific Theatre would have been better suited if combined as one?
  3. insanebikerboy

    O-4 List out (last year)

Complexity doesn't equate to efficiency. Staffs that are undermanned is the fault of the detailers not controlling their billets properly. If there are bloated and/or overmanned staffs, it's not mindless cutting if the overmanning is removed. I don't think that nittany was advocating just...

    FY-15 ADHSB

Depending on the specific community, a 1xFOS actually makes it a bit easier to apply for FTS as the individual records are free game for the FTS detailer. Without a FOS the individual either has to drop a letter of resignation or just hope the active duty detailer is nice and let's the record go...

    FY-15 ADHSB

That would be me, and admittedly I've looked only at 1310, where my run on numbers was correct, even though it still doesn't change the ridiculously low selection rate. On the 1320 side, you guys were just straight up fucked. It's still taking Pers by surprise though. My CO/XO were talking for...

    FY-15 ADHSB

Like I pointed out before, it's not the selection rate that screwed people this board, it's the ridiculous mismanagement of the zones that did it. I'm a middle of the pack 05 year group and I got pulled up into this board and was fairly junior in the in zone group. By doing that it put me in the...
  7. insanebikerboy

    FY-15 ADHSB

The part of the equation that you're leaving out is the number of people in zone. Big Navy fucked away the numbers by their epic reshuffling of zones and year groups a few years ago. That's evident in the deviation per year. However, if you look at the average it's roughly 461 per year. Combined...

    FY-15 ADHSB

Well, that's a good point that I hadn't considered. Maybe it's PERS' way of suckering more folks in to take the bonus for that very reason and then next year it's an 85% O-4 selection rate. Then, blammo, enough bodies for DH and leftovers for whatever else.
  9. insanebikerboy

    FY-15 ADHSB

The part that doesn't make sense to me is that with a shortage of bodies for VFA DH there was still such low promotion rates. The numbers as far as I can tell aren't hiding a majority of helo or non-VFA non-selects, I know quite a few VFA O-3s that aren't on the list. Seems like Naval Avaition...

    FY-15 ADHSB

I took CDR Snodgrass's survey and I wish I had thrown these next few sentences in there. What I didn't (or couldn't) really put my finger on until just recently about the current LT-age generation with respect to jobs is the tendency for civilians in business to jump from job to job. My...

    FY-15 ADHSB

Not trying to open a can of worms but I think the simple act of calling what we do the "Naval Aviation Enterprise" signifies that the leadership considers this a business and not much else. In my experience it feels more and more like the reason people are jumping ship isn't as much of the...

    FTS Redesignation Board - 19 May 2014

Try and highlight in your package how much you know about SELRES admin and career management and are committed to managing their careers. That's what the board is looking for. Fitreps are important but I've known guys to get picked up who don't have as great a fitrep record.

Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps claims pay cuts would raise discipline

Flash, have you ever been an E-3, living in the barracks? Then you don't have a clue wtf you are talking about. As for the morale problem, more money isn't going to solve it and better equipment isn't going to solve it. It's getting rid of PTS and things like the ERB that will improve it. I'm...

    Helo billets at every NAS?

A few air stations have SAR outfits, Whidbey Island, China Lake, Key West, Fallon, I think Lemoore, I may have missed one or two. However, they are for SAR and not for supporting various units at that NAS. The majority of NASs don't have helos assigned directly to the base.

    O4 List

If you're trying to be a landlord while in the military buying cheaper houses is the only way you can do it. Aim for a house that when factoring in all expenses associated (mortgage/HOA/etc) would put the total cost somewhere near E-5/E-6 BAH. Then, you can ask for rent higher than that and make...

    Th-57 cockpit

I am almost 6'4" and I fit tight in the 57. Because I weighed about 245 at the time there were also instructors I couldn't fly with because the CG was out of limits. In the 60 the seat does move fore and aft. There's more room than the 57 but you still won't be able to stretch your legs fully...

Considering my future and FTS, questions for the masters

Late to the reply, but yes, on disassociated tour. The current policy is that if a guy has a patch he cannot apply to 84/85 after his time at the weapons school. The detailers are making those guys go to super jo or other such jobs.
  24. insanebikerboy

Considering my future and FTS, questions for the masters

FTS...on one board you may need to have had previous 84/85 experience to get an FTS slot there, the next board an HSL/HSM guy with no 'SOF' experience could get a slot no problem. Both have happened. My point, the tides change so much with the FTS accession boards that it's hard to say right...

Why it's great to be in Naval Aviation (a.k.a, I flew a B-52 today)

I hesitate to pass along "there I was stories" but this one is too good to pass up. Where I'm deployed at now I have the chance to work a lot with various different units. One just so happens to be a B-52 unit, and yesterday I got to fly a 5.2 hour flight with them, and a good 2.0 of that was in...

    Crossfit/Running

Go ask them how mucht they add on to the workouts Crossfit has. I would be extremely surprised if they said they didn't add anything else into their workout program.

    Crossfit/Running

Got into a "discussion" about this once with a hardcore crossfit guy. I asked why does he kip, he said so he could do more. When I said it was bad form he got offended like I had just told him I f'd his mom.

    Crossfit/Running

Opening a can of worms here I'm sure, but Crossfit is too generic. You can be blasted after a 6 minute workout but I've seen a lot of Crossfitters drop out when the PT sessions start really getting up there in length. It's great if you can power clean 250lbs but that doesn't translate all to...

    TSA Precheck for Military

Not true. I've flown since this was implemented and the TSA agent at the start of the security line directed me to the pre-check line when I showed my CAC and my DOD ID wasn't on my ticket. Like everything, I guess it depends.

    Ball Caps

How the hell is the cnt-cap more convenient than a baseball hat? If you don't wear one of those shitty baseball caps with cardboard in the front that makes it stand straight up, it folds up and fits perfectly into a pocket.

Hornet driver to Intel to Fox News?

I saw her a few times on the news. She was always the "veteran expert" reporter. So so at best, some of the reports she gave made me scratch my head wondering what exactly she was thinking. My wife even remarked about it once. I wish I had specific examples but we stopped watching her. Good on...

    China ADIZ

Sailing through international waters and flying through international airspace isn't enforcing, it's giving the big middle finger to the Chinese. Commissaries Closing?

Not true. We asked for doctors out in town and got it. It was purely at the decision of the Tricare rep, as the MTF was not considered "full" at the time we applied.
  38. insanebikerboy

    Commissaries Closing?

That's basically my point. Other programs and departments need to take some cuts before they start taking pay and benefits from the sailors.
  39. insanebikerboy

    Commissaries Closing?

My rant isn't as much about the commissaries closing as it is on the overall benefits arguments going on right now. It's surprising to see the talk in cutting back benefits in an all volunteer military when we've been driven into the ground over the past decade on work-ups, deployments, etc. I...

    Disappointed in NEX

If the NEX sold only concrete blocks to retarded kids, as long as it's operating in the black who cares what it sells? Just because some of the folks on this thread don't like what they sell means it's a bad idea. Anyone put in their complaints on a comment card or actually talk to a store...

    Disappointed in NEX

Throughout this thread I keep reading that the NEX is self-sustaining and doesn't rely on subsidies, which, if I'm reading it correctly, everyone thinks is a good thing. Disappointed in NEX

I've been overseas for awhile but I back in Hawaii right now and you can't buy any alcohol here after 2200 from any NEX/Mini-mart/etc. Is that the new norm for the NEX or is it just a Hawaii thing? Needless to say with the time difference I'm wide awake at midnight and wanted a beer. Oh well!

Government Shutdown - Take action for or against saluting

The comissary isn't Trader Joe's. Like anything in life, you get what you pay for but for a lot the lack of USDA prime beef in the meat section, etc, isn't a deal breaker. If I bought the same shit out in town that I do at the comissary, I'd be paying a helluva lot more money for my groceries...
