Deployment video causing heat for Enterprise Skipper

Seems to me anyone in a leadership position there (maybe O-5s and up?) either felt uncomfortable, and should have raised questions at the time, or didn't feel uncomfortable, and should be speaking up now. The former may have happened, and we aren't aware of it. The latter doesn't seem to be...

Deployment video causing heat for Enterprise Skipper

Nothing, and optimally everyone would be both. The question is what happens when someone is a professional killer, and isn't a professional gentleman/lady. Should they be thrown out, or should their leadership/warfighting skills be retained? That level of skill is not that common that we should...

I'll bet someone has made a politically correct version of those that would be quite funny.

    DADT repealed

Those warrior cultures were so completely different socially, and were part of such radically different societies, that you can't use what they did or didn't do as reference points here. I have not seen anyone state that homosexuals can't fight. And it's about 99% agreed (from what I have seen)...

    DADT repealed

If we use what previous cultures allowed or didn't allow in re homosexuals as a guideline for what is done with our military, should we do the same with what those previous cultures allowed or didn't allow in re women serving in the military, or what they did in re incorporation of religious...

What happens at Tahoe doesn't stay at Tahoe; What would Gramps say?

They used to do water landings as part of the syllabus in the H-3 FRS, in the St John's River at NAS Jax, and in Otai Reservoir at NAS NI. They stopped doing them after there was an HS-10 mishap (I don't remember what class it was) where they landed in the water too hard; did pretty significant...

    DADT repealed

You're contradicting yourself there. There will definitely be an effect; the questions are how much, for how long, and will the military, when measured as a fighting force, be better or worse as a result.

    DADT repealed

    What's the over/under on that?
  12. E

    DADT repealed

I will be curious to know how they deal with the incidents that do arise (no pun intended), and when there are disruptions as a result. (And there will be some.) I suspect that the upper leadership will not be open about them, because of pressure from the political side. And that will result in...

    Gun camera footage from WWII

I believe by the end of the war all U.S. fighter planes; activated by firing the guns. Made for much more accurate estimates of enemy aircraft destroyed/damaged. (Imagine that, fighter pilots who exaggerated about their exploits!)

What happens at Tahoe doesn't stay at Tahoe; What would Gramps say?

It's actually something similar to Prairie Masker. They lower a hose down, draw in a bunch of water, and then spray it out around the helo. Helps it blend into the background.

    USAA Homeowners Insurance Stupidity

    Career after the Marines

    International Burn a Qu'ran Day

" They ran into trouble when religion got involved namely Afghanistan and Iran." Which is why I think they have been wary about getting involved in that context lately - and they need to be very cautious, because of their internal Muslim issues and large populations. As far as the Arabs and...

    Helo ditching procedure

"but it won't matter one bit if the flight model in the sim isn't accurate." I think the benefit of going through the EPs, especially the critical first few steps, outweighs negative habits that might be built up.

    Helo ditching procedure

Can the phrog water taxi? They used to do water landings and takeoffs as part of the syllabus in the H3 FRS, but they stopped doing those after a couple of minor mishaps. Once at Jax an H-3 had a S/E failure in a hover (not doing water landings), and taxied approx 15 miles to the beach, ran...

    Helo ditching procedure

Don't know if it applies to your helos or not but to jettison windows on the way down or not was an occasional topic of discussion in the ready room (H-3s). The argument for doing so (if you weren't actually on the controls), was to save a step in the egress procedures, and because if the...

    International Burn a Qu'ran Day

In the long-term, the more light that is shed on the true nature of these cultures, the better. There is a short-term price, though, that needs to be weighed against the long-term benefits of doing that.
  40. E

    International Burn a Qu'ran Day

Long-standing peace along the line of the peace on the Korean peninsula is possible. Long-standing peace along the lines of the peace between the U.S. and Canada would require significant changes to the cultures there. Not impossible, but pretty unlikely.
  41. E

    International Burn a Qu'ran Day

In the short-term, it's an almost impossible situation. We need their assistance to stop particular types/acts of violence, which requires assisting/encouraging the institutions that lead to the violence we are trying to stop. Try to walk the tightrope of kissing up to them enough to get their...

    Low NSS's get boarded

There are some who are slow starters, and then do great. Others are quick starters, and then fizzle out. (You can use that on a variety of topics - talk amongst yourselves!) That cycle repeats itself at every stage of the pipeline. The hard part is determining how to let the first group...

    NASA's New Mission?

Oh, we'll know. At least those of us in the border states. If the situation continues getting worse, then the steps being taken aren't appropriate. I know that's hard for you to understand.
  48. E

    NASA's New Mission?

"when it does little more than what existing federal programs already do" No, it does (or will do) what existing federal programs are supposed to do. Big difference. The facts on the ground speak for themselves - the situation is getting worse, not better. Thus, the steps aren't appropriate.
  49. E

    NASA's New Mission?

Illegal immigration and much of the drug traffic are closely intertwined: same groups are involved to some degree, and much of the activity occurs in the same poorly guarded border regions. Closely monitoring the borders will have a positive effect on both issues. The Arizona law will make the...
