    Ingenuity Helo On Mars

Yeah, I understand how it works. To be more accurate, I believe right now Bell has the only civilian certified FBW helo and I think the CH53K is the only mil helo that’s FBW (there’s probably a few foreign ones I’m missing). In other words, in the vast majority of helos the pilot physically...

    Ingenuity Helo On Mars

I agree that the latency makes it physically impossible to hand fly this from earth. As for hand fly, a traditional helicopter you 100% control the rotor head by hand, with augmentation from the AFCS. There are some flight modes where you can let the AFCS fly the helo hands off (I.e...

Do you use an iPad in the cockpit? Would you?

Since the DD-175 is no longer a thing, filing an 1801 via Foreflight “should” work. To the AF’s credit, they’ve rewritten some pubs to explicitly allow departing VFR. Talking to the older dudes, it was virtually unheard of to depart VFR back in the day. It’s also community dependent with...

Do you use an iPad in the cockpit? Would you?

If you use Foreflight, you can file everything via the app. I can use it to file a valid Eurocontrol flight plan, and flight planning through Europe is a pain in the ass.
  6. insanebikerboy

Do you use an iPad in the cockpit? Would you?

The AF has definitely cracked this nut. All pubs on an EFB, we have an EFB administrator, and Wi-Fi in the squadron. The admin let’s us all know via email if any app updates need to happen and it’s standard to sync your iPad every morning to ensure you have the latest pubs. The only required...

    NFO to NSW support?

Theres a surprising number of non SEAL types going out the door with actual SEALs. I had a former AM3 (I was his div-O) that went his own way. I ran into him ten years later downrange and he’s riding around in a MATV smoking dudes, but he’s still a regular, non-SEAL, AM1. Yes and yes, and yes...

Do you use an iPad in the cockpit? Would you?

There’s the much maligned Aero App, which is actually a DoD produced app that is similar to Foreflight. It’s also has Giant reports, which I don’t believe Foreflight has. Yet another DoD app is ATAK, and iTAK to a lesser degree. ATAK is designed for Android based products as it can use a lot...

Best aircraft for 10 years of debauchery

Work on your game enough that it doesn’t matter what platform you fly. You can get a lot if ‘headway’ by just being a pilot.

    General Order #5...?
  13. insanebikerboy

    NJP TO OFFICER

From what I can recall when I was enlisted applying for an officer program (circa 2000-2001), an NJP made one ineligible for an officer program for two years. That was 20 years ago though so I might be misremembering it.

How to take the next 6 years off, a.k.a, my transfer to the Air Force

Your description is more apt to a pointy nose squadron. Leadership in the tanker world doesn’t tend to fly much so they are typically always around.

How to take the next 6 years off, a.k.a, my transfer to the Air Force

Since it's germane, crew rest is only violated by official duty taskings/interruptions. So, your example of a crazy long debrief that affects the crew rest for the next day's mission would be a violation of crew rest. Conversely, if a dude chose to use his crew rest time to work out, that's on...

How to take the next 6 years off, a.k.a, my transfer to the Air Force

That’s my point. In the Navy we just accepted it and dealt with it. If the AF was tasked to have supported the same mission as in your example, they’d have either said no or brought more jets and crews to make the timing work.
  17. insanebikerboy

How to take the next 6 years off, a.k.a, my transfer to the Air Force

In the AF, you’ll get pulled off the flight and won’t be allowed to fly if you bust crew rest for anything. Crew rest is sacrosanct, and the only permissible thing is if your the AC and it’s mission related.

How to take the next 6 years off, a.k.a, my transfer to the Air Force

I saw things like the CO requiring dudes to be in to work for 0800 AOMs when they landed at 0330 that same morning. I saw guys get reamed for not being at ground events on the schedule when they had later flights that day. We did push back and basically just told those COs to go f-themselves...

How to take the next 6 years off, a.k.a, my transfer to the Air Force

It’s actually written in the AF instructions. As much as I liked to bash on the AF before I switched over, especially on things like crew rest, they do it right. And by right I don’t mean good deals, I mean letting people just physically recover. It opened my eyes to just how much we sucked it...

    Pilot shortage?

I don’t know how it is now, but when I was at USNA the guys that came from NAPS were almost entirely prior-E or future varsity athletes. The argument can be made for and against varsity athletes but I think it’s a great thing for the prior-e that may not have been #1 in his high school class and...

Mythbusters to take on: PLANE ON A TREADMILL!!

Man what a small world. I grew up 15 minutes from there, would drive past it heading to the Hiawasee. Back then it didn’t seem too busy. Pretty cool to see it’s doing well.

That’s intriguing. Is there a benefit of flying IFR? My ignorance of glider flying makes me think it’s just a VFR aircraft.

    Pilot shortage?

I’m hoping someone checks my memory but I want to say those (4/5/5) were the requirements for pilot when I was at USNA. This was circa 2004.

Is there any hope of getting into the USAFA with mediocre grades as a freshman in HS?

You’re a freshman in high school who just finished the first semester. I can’t tell if your exasperated or if you’ve given up, but either way, you have a long time left to improve your record. That said, the academies don’t look at just grades, they look at everything. Extracurriculars, sports...

    Pilot shortage?

Nope. I didn’t want to go too far into the rabbit hole, those numbers are purely what the Navy spent directly on me. If you start counting infrastructure costs (building mx, electricity, etc), depot level mx, and other supporting personnel costs (IP, sim instructors, etc), I’d hazard to guess...

    Pilot shortage?

There's reasons why I'm glad I'm now logging a ton of multiengine heavy time...but hearing stats like this one ranks right up there near the top. Can I retire yet?
  33. insanebikerboy

    Pilot shortage?

You sparked my nerd nerve so I just did some quick excel math as I happen to have an old copy of the FY-18 DoD flight hour rates. For me, the Navy spent between $5.5-$6 million to get me from brand new ensign to SWTP Level IV. That includes my annual salary.

How to take the next 6 years off, a.k.a, my transfer to the Air Force

Yup, I just called them straight up. Unfortunately, the AF has suspended the IST program for the time being. Not sure if it’s due to covid or something else, but until it opens back up there’s not much else you can do. My only advice is to check their website every few months to see if it’s...

    Different platform cultures

That’s pretty much any USAF fighter squadron that I’ve dealt with. You should ask them to choose something and watch them try to point at it with their elbows. Apparently if they point at it with their hand, it’s a ‘target’. The A-10 drivers though, those dudes just drink whiskey, fuck bitches...

Supreme Court to review Stolen Valor Act

FAIPs are studs that did well and fly as an IP their first full tour post flight school. After those 3-4 years they compete for a platform and head out to the fleet. I’ve never heard of anyone doing an entire career as a FAIP.

The AF swore the RQ-4 would replace the U-2...calling @HuggyU2
  42. insanebikerboy

    C-130 to Replace E-6B?

Yup, never seen one cracked but I look every preflight. My guess is that the E-6B is so expensive to fix because there are so few of them. It’s the same reason the USAF is shitcanning the KC-10, smaller fleet so cost per plane is through the roof.

SNA Inter-service Transfer from USN to USMC

  45. insanebikerboy

One knife with your gear. Which one?

If it’s not a knife that’s approved on the PR gear list, then you will have to carry an approved knife plus this custom knife. At least the approved list has changed from only the old school combat knife to stuff like folding Spydercos, etc, but you’ll still need to carry two (or, you’re...

    COVID-19

You bring up a good point. The effectiveness of online learning doesn’t necessarily equate to the how much effort the teachers put in. My sister in law was saying it’s like herding cats. No matter how much she tries to make it engaging, etc, it’s more work for her just to get the kids to do...

    COVID-19

Navy Working Uniform Type II and III - finally something sailors can wear....

The way the awards manual reads, it equates the strike/flight air medal to the combat action ribbon. “The CR will not be awarded to personnel for aerial combat, since the Strike/FlightAir Medal provides recognition for aerial combat exposure”. BS (non-V) is the combat zone equivalent of the MSM.

Since there’s no V on it, it could have been a combat or admin award.
