Navy Srvce Selection Rejection - Soon to be ensign

You are subject to needs of the Navy. This year it was harder to get pilot. All you can do is apply for conversion after first tour.

    Enlisted to Aviator path

For STA-21 there are no college and time in service requirements. From what I have seen, mostly second classes (E-5's) get accepted. However, there are also E-4's and some E-3's. Definitely take college classes whenever possible and go to your Navy College office to take some CLEP examinations...

    Deployments...and...wives (girlfriends)

You know e5b-wife has a point. I met my wife on sea duty so all I knew was not being home all of the time. When I checked into my shore command they said some people might have problems because you are not used to all of the time at home. That was so true. Going underway every now and then makes...

    Deployments...and...wives (girlfriends)

You know, this completely depends on the couple. I have been on two deployments, one with a girlfriend and one married. With the girlfriend, I didn't take the commitment seriously so obviously it wasn't going to work. My wife is very supportive and understanding of my carrer, and that is a must...

    Length of a career, retirement

Well, as an enlisted guy it is almost impossible to get booted for not getting promoted. Once you make E-5 you can stay for the full 20. I made E-5 in under 2 years, so I could have stayed in without getting promoted for 18 years. As for officers, I have seen it happen, but not all that often...

    Yeeaahhh!!!

How soon till you graduate? and what are the chances of getting into CEC? The only CEC officers that I have met were people who converted from SWO.

Jaznups, How do you like San Diego? I hear UCSD is a good school, I currently go to USD. Have you had a chance to see a lot of the Navy while you are here?

Hey, thanks for the link to your website. Those OCS journals are great.

    Care to explain?

Usually the month by moth waiver is up to 36 months. So if you had over 36 months enlisted service then you could attend flight school up to age 31, as opposed to 29 for someone without.

    Enlisted Navy -- free time

There are a lot of things that suck about ship life, however it does grow on you. It is funny how once you leave the ship so many of you fondest memories are from when you were there. It is a very close environment, especially when you are at sea. I hate leaving my family for any amount of time...

    Enlistment to Commission

Of course I don't think there is anything wrong with enlisted service. I am a first class now and wouldn't change my experiences for anything, however the first couple years of my enlisted career sucked. Life got better, but I am glad I was 18 so I didn't realize how bad it was at the time. If...

    Enlistment to Commission

This is just my opinion, but I think all of those people who enlist with 4 year degrees are insane. The life and pay of a junior enlisted sailor is nothing to get excited about.

    Enlisted Navy -- free time

If you are on sea duty it might not be so easy. Even with your free-time, there just is not the space or resources to train. You can easily keep in shape, but real running and swimming are not an option. Plus since we are talking about the Navy, I think you can probably count on sea duty.

In Need of OCS Partner in Crime

What's up with "Women will force change upon salty dogs for the good of the fleet." Do you really think there is a problem that needs to be changed? I don't want to start the whole women in the military thing, but from what I have seen, women need to be held to the same standard and men have to...

    SNA designator

SNA is 1395 (139X) NA is 1310 (131X) NFO 1320 (132X) basically the last digit just denotes Active-duty or reserve. For your first four years, everyone is considered USNR.

    Tattoo

If you are even questioning if you should get a tattoo or not, then you probably shouldn't. I have 2 and made sure they were things that I could never regret. As for the military, as long as they are not visible in uniform or questionable in taste then it really doesn't matter.
  25. K

    Fitness

In a way I agree, but it also besides the point. I have been in the Navy for 6 years and have often been ashamed of some of my fellow sailors appearance. However, the truth is that it really is not that important to our mission. While enlisted, I worked in electronics and many of the best techs...

    Seaman to Admiral

I am confused about the ASTB scores. I thought that the OAR was like a composite type score, like an overall aptitude. I am confused because Harmony Boy has much higher individual scores, yet my OAR is higher. I just don't see how that can be possible. My scores are: OAR 57 AQR 6 PFAR 8 PBI 5...

    What's wrong with helos?

Gatordev, I am curious is 60 pilots ever get to do any 10/10 jumps or anything. I was a surface SAR guy and I got to do some cross-training with the AW's in our HSL. Jumping and getting hoisted was probably one of the best times I have had in the Navy.
  31. K

    What's wrong with helos?

A lot of my prior service friends who selected aviation are hoping for P-3s. Most of them just want P-3s because they don't land on big grey ships and because you get great per diem. John, why did you want them?
  32. K

    What's wrong with helos?

Is it easy to get your choice of HS or HSL and where are all of the different fleet 60 squadrons? Edited by - kaiangel on 08/26/2002 21:52:36

    What's wrong with helos?

It seems from what I read here that people want everything but helos. Have any of you that have been through the pipeline seen many people who pick helos first? Maybe it is because 60's are all I have been around, but to me its seems that they would be a great life. To me it seems that helos...

    Enlisted to OCS

From my experience the Navy does not care if you got an enlistment bonus, or if you are collecting an SRB. Also, as long as your test scores are high and you have great evaluations then you should get accepted regardless of specialty.
  35. K

    Enlisted to OCS

I am an active duty guy going aviation through an officer program and compared to many guys I know who get selected for aviation your scores look fine. It is very clear that we are held to a lower standard, in terms of GPA and ASTB scores, than the civilians.

    Enlisted Nuclear to Flight School

This is just my opinion as a former enlisted guy that is going officer. But I would say not to enlist first and then definitely not as a nuke. First off, you are over qualified. Second, you will be so busy is school for the next 2 years that applying will be difficult. For what reason are you...

    re-enlisting and OCS...is there a catch?

There isn't any recoupment of SRB. Whatever you have received up until the point you are accepted is yours, the rest is immediately stopped. So for example, if you are picked up for OCS a year after you re-enlist then you keep half of your SRB. The half that you received up front. I am in an...

    Enlisted to OCS

Gresh, Don't be intimidated by the STA-21 program. Remember it replaced STA, ECP, and BOOST, so there are a ton of people who get picked up. It is always worth it to apply because all they can do is say no. Plus, no one else is going to worry about your future but you. If you really want it then...

    surgery question

As for SWO, that shouldn't be any problem at all. I have had two Initial aviation physicals so far and they are very picky about eyes, however your problem was on the lid. I don't think that would matter at all. I personally would not tell them, but that is just me. I have been in the Navy for 6...

Where did you find out about Air Warriors?

Some of the OC's at my unit who had already service selected aviation told me about it. They said that it had the most information about flight school on it and they were right. So far this has been the only useful resource for learning about flight training.

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

As for the ASTB, I am sure you will do great on the math section. On the BIO I would just say be honest but think aggressive. The person who administered my test said before the test that the Navy wasn't looking for pilots who wanted to wait for things to come their way, he said they wanted...

    Enlisted to OCS

I am currently in the Seaman to Admiral program and there are a bunch of guys much older than you here with me that are going from here to OCS and then fligh school. The STA program requires you to go through OCS after you finish your BA. Active duty time counts off from the age requirement so...

    Beating the ASTB

I know that for me the three scores that count are the PFAR, the PBI, and the AQR. The PFAR counts for 20% of my application and the PBI and AQR count for 10% each. I would assume that the weighting of the scores would be similar for civilians.
  45. K

    Beating the ASTB

When you talk about aviation score, do you mean the PFar or the PBI?

    Army?

I dont think that is true. I took the AFAST for the army and I am not and have never been in the army. I was looking into the WOFT Warrant Officer Flight Training program. It is fairly easy to get picked up if you qualify and if I had not got picked up for a navy commission then I definitely...

A subject long gone but now ressurected.

I dont't know how different the situation is for my since I am in an active duty commissioning program, but this is how they told me that service selection goes. First off, your GPA is the most important thing. However, based on your major your GPA is weighted. Technical (engineering) majors are...

    GI Bill for dependents?

It is true that the pay for an O-1 under 2 years is fairly low. In fact, it is less than I make as an E-6 over 6. However, the great thing about being an officer is that your first two advancements are automatic and bring significant pay raises. So while the first 2 - 4 years may not be so easy...

    OCS dates and gender??

I do not know what you are interested in, and I definitely don't want to say anything bad about supply corps, but I think that aviation is well worth the wait. We are talking about a career decision here. I have been in the navy for 6 years and supply is by no means exciting. The supply officers...

    Run Training

I realize that training is different for everyone, but for me weight training my legs hurt my time. I run around a 9:00 but my friends that run the really fast times say that sprints are the only way to improve. I always run 3-6 miles so maybe thats why I don't improve.
