    The great Helo debate

I get that, but I guess my real question is why bother? If you are the bottom HAC on that det you have no chance to break out at the squadron, so now everybody has less experience and you sent guys to sea out of sheer bloody-mindedness.

    The great Helo debate

I could understand taking extra H2Ps to sea because they have to get qualed, but why on earth do you have 6 HACs?

That's strange, I missed the outpouring of public reaction to this.

    Army "Right Sizing"

[I'm too lazy to pull out all the quotes related to the comments I want to make, but hopefully this will all make sense anyways.] - On the subject of earnings after leaving the service. The best way to figure out what you make now is to take a paycheck calculator (here is one, but there are...

    MH-60S hard landing in Tokyo

He missed a lot of the real interesting stuff from the picture anyways. Which does bring up a good point: try to get to ASO school, it is still one of the best classes in the Navy, and is worth something to lots of aviation/aerospace jobs in the real world.

    Goodbye to the "Kiowa Warrior"?

None of the services have had much recent success* with programs that couldn't be billed as upgrades to already existing models. *Though I suppose it is all in where you set the bar.

    That makes much more sense.

Diversity... what you need to know

I just don't believe that HR is in a secret conspiracy with the CEO/board to increase LGBT numbers which are then secretly collected and reported (to where, exactly..?). And yes, I'm far enough up the organization that it would have to be that high, and it would directly contradict the...

PM if you'd like me to look at your resume - I'm pretty involved with hiring at an aerospace outfit.

    Imminent danger pay area shrinking?

Assigning flight deck pay when you don't have enough skins to go around is easy: Divide your people into 3 groups (those on the deck almost all the time for every evolution, those almost never on the deck, and those in between). Give it to those in the first group in reverse rank-order, then if...

Is a Command Financial Specialist a substitute for an accountant?

At your age and salary the higher tax bracket is going to be a minimal hit. If you have the funds to pay the tax hit roll it into a Roth IRA. Pick a low fee Vanguard fund and you will do fine. Take the time to learn how to manage your own money, but below are a few things that have worked well...

Applications Open for the CNO's Rapid Innovation Cell

Random advice for the OP. Don't be too impressed by your "hand-selected" status, and be even less impressed by the the people you select yourselves. I will be the first to hope you somehow accomplish great things, but I will also be the first to advise you to never buy in to your own hype.

Add Wings to your profile: Pinning on new wings

Point and click with a trackball may suck compared to what it should have been, but it is way beyond the legacy keyset. Now the P/C-legacy keyset hybrid? THAT was the worst.

    Maint...er...MD State Police jobs

IIRC, the AF requires that you be an MTP for those slots. Unless you did DCMA at SAC or challenged the course there are very few USN/USMC guys who get that qual.

Retirement and last flight in the Navy after 20 years....

It is the good life, BTW. The Navy really was good to me but retirement is even better. You'll love it.

    ERAU Daytona

I don't know exactly what "space physics" entails, but I work at one of the bigger commercial space outfits and we don't have any there. If you really want to design space ships I'd suggest MechE, EE, some of the CS degrees, and to a lesser extent Aero.

AT-6 excluded from Light Attack Aircraft

The turd in the punchbowl of this whole discussion is the UAS vs. Manned Aircraft discussion. When you look at the proportion of the cost of a vehicle that goes in to sustaining the meat puppets (cockpit and safety infrastructure, training, etc) it gets harder to support. We are still building...

AT-6 excluded from Light Attack Aircraft

So if it isn't operating off a CVN, doesn't that imply some sort of airfield, where we can maintain adequate security and whatever assets are needed for a relatively permissive environment? What does that cost?

    Space program

There may be some with no military experience, but none have ever made it through the first resume cut at my company, and I suspect they are fairly rare. (Much like there are some test guys at OEMs who never flew military, but again they are the exceptions).

Further Education while in the Navy

You have a few misconceptions: - "Aeronautical Science" degrees are not a requirement for any corporate (or other civilian) flying jobs. - The biggest variable to acceptance to TPS are the community you are in and what their openings are during the window you are able to apply (you have to...

    Space program

You'd still do fine and know more than me. Like with MATLAB I spend most of my time shaking my head about how excited I was just to get a spreadsheet to use my sophomore year when I was an engineering undergrad. <------ Old.
  41. B

    Space program

Yes, but the interface issues between the versions can still get you - though the cautionary tale of Airbus should be cutting down on that by now.
  42. B

    Space program

A career in military aviation offers a good route to the commercial space industry. Engineering degrees, ability to code, be a CATIA driver, various aviation-related skills (test, etc) all will help.
  43. B

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

Correct. It is programmed automatically in normal operation, but can be set manually. Nose attitude (would be much higher if the stab were level).

    Sequestration and you...

I started a thread on here about how it went for me finding a job after I retired last summer, but short version is I agree with wm. Your education and the jobs you choose in the Navy will have a direct effect on your options when you get out. Shorter version: plan ahead or take what you get.
  45. B

    Sequestration and you...

With prior thought and effort, you can come out at 8 or 20 years with a leg up on your military peers (whatever your field) but unless you are an acquisition guy going to a defense contractor or a a pilot with the right kind of mins going into flying you will be behind your civilian peers (there...

What's your opinion about outing oneself in the motivational statement?

I'd suggest you leave it out. I agree that modern 20 something's mostly don't care about this issue, but those aren't the people judging your application. It's a simple calculation: the chances that sharing that information positively influence somebody to select you are much smaller than...
