    Army's newest flight gear..

They are already available - I know of quite a few in the test community using them. One of my pilots is a big fan, but I haven't wanted to leave my helmet at Pax long enough to get it myself yet. Your problem as a student is going to be to convince those VT's to drop the money on you as...

AMDO, What is it like, what exactly do you do?

I cannot speak to CWO/LDO, but AMDO's as a community are not going anywhere that I know of (AMDO's and AEDO's combine at the O-6 level, going from 1510/1520 designators to both being 1500's).

    Cindy Sheehan calls it quits!

She raised a son who chose to serve and gave his life in that effort. I will honor her (and anybody else) for that, and ignore her for everything else she has done.

    Hsm-70?

They can have sufficient a/c to meet that timeframe. While we won't be getting the 20 or so that I believe the schedule still shows for FY 08 (that sked will be changing in the near future), I think 15 is a fairly reasonable target for next FY for LRIP 3 and Lot 4 a/c.

    In Case of Emergency

Your best bet is to let your COC know in advance of your problem/potential problem. If you don't want to do that yet and you are wondering if your situation really fits the Navy's concept of a family emergency then either post a general description or PM the details to one of us older types and...

Helo SNA Medical Attrition; switch to Intel?

That link only stands up the squadron administratively. Warm bodies and aircraft will follow much later. There will be ZERO R's available to -70 in Mar 08.

Helo SNA Medical Attrition; switch to Intel?

Your CO has no obligation to rush you out the door. Your designator will be changed to 1300 (GEneral AViation). I don't know if GENAVs are still being sent to CVN/LHA/LHD's as ship's company but I would check. (That was a few years ago, so that policy may be long gone.)

Helo SNA Medical Attrition; switch to Intel?

Cut-off for the June board was end of Apr (I think, too lazy to look it up) unless there are exceptions for attrites. Oct board should be his target, but the advice about meeting the detailer is spot on.

6 Navy Commanding Officers Sacked in 6 Weeks

I would also add that CO's tend to be community favorites - and have often received beneficial detailing and other breaks from their sea daddies along the way. If they pay for that privilege with the occasional quick hook, well, I am inclined to believe that maybe that all balances out in the...

    The Crisis in Naval Aviation

I am not arguing the point that some just need a warm body, just pointing out the initial response to the requests. Since the ACSB is not a statuatory board, I would be curious to see how much the precept really affected the decisions of the folks on the board who came in knowing who their...

    The Crisis in Naval Aviation

Strictly personal opinion here, but I've had a fair amount of interaction with USAF (on the acq side relating to CSAR-X) and I don't see life getting any better for AF helo types. If you love the mission and that is your top priority then that is a great way to get into it, but the lifestyle...

    The Crisis in Naval Aviation

This would be more of a discussion for another thread, but you have to keep in mind that 13xx - more so than the other designators - tends to punish folks who do anything "different" with their career path. It has nothing to do with what or where the mission is, but everything to do with the...

    The Crisis in Naval Aviation

    The Crisis in Naval Aviation

Totally agree on the training issues you mention - simulation is not the same - but even when fixed I am not positive that the mindsets of commanders will change. To a certain extent, it seems a lot of senior folks look at those capabilities and seem to be thinking "that's great, but it isn't...

    The Crisis in Naval Aviation

While you will see a significant increase in ASW capabilities with the Romeo, the downside is that you should expect commanders to be interested in you almost exclusively as a sensor platform. For HS guys who want to be tactical I am afraid going to the R would be quite a disappointment. I...

    The Crisis in Naval Aviation

The growler program seems to be reasonably healthy, but JSF has many issues, and the P-8 many potential issues. I wouldn't count any of those chickens quite yet. And to add my .02 to ground jobs, I don't think they are holding us back from our flying potential. Yeah, they occupy time that...

    Harrier question

From a boat point of view, the largest problem was too much optimism in an air plan. Regardless of how good the deck crew is (and Essex should be the best due to their optempo), there are still only 6 spots on the left side of the boat. No amount of competence on the part of the deck or...

I had the opportunity to be a third-party participant in 8 BG workup/SOCEX's (and all the other names they evolved into), each one with at least a couple of different components to the ACE. Army Armed Reconaissance Helo in trouble

heyjoe has it right, integration costs have shot up to the point where they are looking at something closer to $10 m/copy. COTS is all well and good but it gets tricky when you try to get it all to talk to each other.

Why do Navy 60's not fly with forward cockpit doors removed a la Army?

The doors do contribute to the structural integrity for both B/R and blackhawk style airframes. The benefit is mostly in impact attenuation.

    NAVAIR announces TH-57D

And nothing from nothing, but since we have disagreed on motivations (if not on systems) before, I thought I might throw in some free advice that you are free to ignore: Whether intentional or not, you come off as being pretty quick on the trigger to blame "old guard" 46 guys for some if not...

    NAVAIR announces TH-57D

MPS for S/R was not original code - that costs more (though I agree it might have been worth it). (And please don't think I am defending it: the latest version automatically disables mode 3 in the aircraft when you make a mode S entry on preflight, one of umpteen reasons it is hard to be a...

    NAVAIR announces TH-57D

I don't know how much you ever play in the acquisition process, but understand that you are talking about a (relatively speaking) very small number of actual folks who are fighting the cost-schedule-requirements war. The ability to orientate (thrown in for our USMC friends) the map to any...

There isn't a simple answer (outside of going box by box). But remember it is not just the individual boxes, but they are also wired together with other boxes to let them all talk to each other. I don't know enough about the B to speak exactly to the overall improvement in capability, but...

What does that shiny new ride cost?

"BFM" to a guy who grew up in a Phrog. May all be old news to you, but I started out in an aircraft that still had vacumn tubes... Regardless, the F-22 has some pretty cool, and subsequently pretty expensive things that were paid for by their developmental dollars. Whether or not JSF takes...

    NAVAIR announces TH-57D

If you ever play with Link-16 you will appreciate the cockpit a little more. It takes that type of interaction to appreciate its good points. While by far not the best cockpit out there, it is such a step up from some of our legacy airframes that you have to like it for that, if not for a...

What does that shiny new ride cost?

Think about size and duration of the production run, schedule changes (it is more expensive to move from 15 to 10 a/c per year than it would be to just start at 10), and the fact that there are some whiz-bang, BFM things in the F-22 that will not be in the JSF.
  41. B

    NAVAIR announces TH-57D

I am not much of a SAC fan myself, but I don't think you can blame them for the R's weight issues. And Lockheed only stuck on what they were paid to stick on. So short answer is requirements creep, longer answer is the whole Helo Master Plan vision-thingy and the list of things we (and our...

Take what Big Iron said to heart, you would be amazed at how quickly the front office will decide if you are a player or not. The first thing you want to do is sit down with your DH and find out what he wants - your first OIC will have the most influence on how you do, but you can bet your...
