    Advice

Fixed. ;) pilotwannab: Do not hesitate to contact an OSO, regardless of how bad out of shape you think you might be. Meet with him, be honest, and tell him what stage you are at right now - he will most likely have you attend weekly PT sessions to help you out. Stay motivated and push yourself...

Stupid question: what's the reason for wires being typically exposed in helos - easier access/time-saver for maintenance?

    Top Gun 2

What kinda irks me is that there are no recent flicks about Marine aviators out there ("The Great Santini" would be the latest one that I can think of, and that's from '79). Aside from having cameos in True Lies, Independence Day and Live Free or Die Hard, there's nothing. How cool would it be...

    ASTB - Prep/Study Guide feedback

Yeah, I remember having 3 or 4 of those on there. I must've lucked out. :icon_wink In any case, depending on how much I can get sorted out in the near future, I'll be applying for either January or June '09.

    ASTB - Prep/Study Guide feedback

Got my scores today... First time taking it, got 5/6/6 45. The score is not ideal, but counts as passing for the USMC. Now for the gouge: Preparation: long story short, I only studied for about a week and a half. You should probably not do this, and give yourself at least a month. If there's...

    Generation Kill

Not at all what I was implying. I've seen that phrasing on the official MOH website, so I didn't think anything of it, e.g. http://www.medalofhonor.com/ButchOHare.htm

    Generation Kill

Indeed, an excellent episode. Honest, brutal, sad, hilarious and exciting. Can't wait for the next installment. The film student in me, however, hated the editing during the ride through the town at the end - I kept seeing the Mk.19 gunner shoot at the building 10-times over, yet they didn't...

    Generation Kill

Lt. Col. Michael Shoup, a USMC NFO FAC who was attached to 1st Recon Battalion during the push to Baghdad, recently posted his comments on "Generation Kill" (the book). It's quite an interesting read: http://commentaryongenerationkill.blogspot.com/2008/06/comments-on-generation-kill.html

    Aircraft Carrier Made of Ice

Apparently the US Navy considered having one in time for the invasion of Japan, as pykrete would've practically made it impervious to kamikaze attacks.

MUST SEE FILM: Operation Red Flag

I think 'Fighter Pilot' is enjoyable if you take it with a grain of salt. While full of fake-drama, cheesy "plot", somewhat unrealistic dogfighting, and suspiciously advanced CGI used during briefs/debriefs, it's a decent popcorn muncher with some excellent aerial shots. I saw it at a Dome IMAX...

    Generation Kill

And no to mention, that in reality the Memphis Belle was not the first aircraft/crew to complete the 25 mission requirement. Anyways, I remember enjoying 'Generation Kill' the book more than the show, but seeing as only episode has aired thus far I'll refrain from making a final...

    Question about Marines/Blue Angels

Personally I've never had the desire to become a Blue Angel, but I was always curious about how the whole process went. Do jet drivers apply for a spot while they're in fleet squadrons? And I'm assuming being a BA basically counts as a flying-billet shore tour, correct?

The Great, Constantly Changing Picture Gallery

Personally I never understood why so many people diss(ed) their looks - I always thought it's one of the sexiest war machines ever made. When I was younger, the bent-wings and F-4 designation made me think it was an updated version of the WW2 Corsair.

    Shaky 20/40

The MEPS eye test seemed rather ghetto actually, which makes me a bit wary about its results. We'll see what happens during the flight physical when I take it next month.

    Binghamton Air Show

There were two that I saw. Had a brief chat with one of them (a French Navy Lieutenant), and he seemed like a real good guy. Apparently once he goes back to his country's fleet, he'll be flying Rafale's (!).

I took 200+ pics yesterday at the air show in Binghamton, NY. It was good fun, and I managed to meet some good people and see some cool birds. Unfortunately some of the performances were canceled due to an approaching storm (e.g. the Navy heritage flight). High-res' are available for those want...

    Camouflaged Aircraft and related topics

I wasn't aware that Marines fly F-16s in the Adversary Squadrons. "Bogeys and Bandits" mentioned that they typically only fly F-5s (then again the book was written over 10 years ago). Cool.

    flight physical questions

    1) As far as vision standards... If I took my first FP right before OCS and my vision was within reqs (20/40 or under), would it still have to be 20/40 or under during subsequent FPs at TBS and API? Or is it that once past the initial FP, the vision reqs would be more lenient? 2) Does it really...

    Shaky 20/40

A little update: I went through MEPS the other day, and they said my eyes were 20/20 (near and distant)?! Naturally I'm very skeptical...I'm going to have a proper flight physical sometime in July or August, and I'll see what the docs there say.

Art Educator Career Switcher Trying To Go OCS

As stated above, your degree doesn't matter. I have a degree in Computer Art, and my OSO didn't even flinch when I told him (I'm applying for USMC). As for the ASTB, the math, physics, and reading sections are pretty much on a High School level so I doubt you'll have any problems with those...

    Shaky 20/40

I apologize if my question isn't clear, but that's not what I mean. I thought people don't go to NAMI for a physical until after commissioning (and right before API), but then I've read about people going right before or during OCS. What I don't understand is if everyone has to go to NAMI twice...

Thanks for the replies. I'll be turning 25 this August, so in all likelihood my vision is stabilized (or so I hear). I'll be heading to MEPS two weeks from now;I'll see what the eye doc there says, and I'll make my decision afterward. Quick question: the one thing I'm somewhat confused about...

    Shaky 20/40

My vision has been 20/20 most of my life - it has unfortunately worsened over the past couple of years due to heavy computer usage and constant reading on my part. I went to an optometrist recently and I'm currently at 20/40 (the cut-off), although my left eye seems to be a bit worse. The...

Sure did. :) I remember when they beat Navy in '04 - it was a fantastic game and I was rooting for SU (it being my school at the time). A big part of me thought the academy boys "deserved" win however - many of them were deployed soon after. =/
