    remember when helmets looked cool?

This actually kind of surprises me. I thought they would have changed all of the helmet/ICS hookups to a common/standardized setup by now.

    remember when helmets looked cool?

We referred to them as Kidd-class. And the Callaghan was damn fine boat. Our det all knew we were lucky to be on a Kidd-class ship. She was only four years old when I sailed on her. Yes, the air-conditioning worked as advertised and was put to good use in the Gulf of Oman during the Summer of...

    remember when helmets looked cool?

In regards to the "how much has to be light colored tape" question I offer the following example. The helmet you see below was issued to me in the Spring of 1984. I was "syllabus complete" in the RAG and doing the usual waiting for orders to the fleet squadron. When my helmet came in, I was...

Unexpected Wrigley Field Memorial Day flyover

Only to youngsters like you and I. The named freeways in the LA area are sections of road that can and do change freeway numbers. For example, the "Hollywood Freeway" starts out on the 101 in downtown LA and goes north. At Universal City, the 101 bends west, becomes the "Ventura Freeway" and the...

When I was in SD, KYXY was the easy-listening station.... And to bring it back on-topic (sort of...), tattoos used to be a sign if rebelliousness. Now they are a sign of conformity. When the current crop of twenty-somethings are running the big corporations, you will be looked at suspiciously...

Marine Chopper down in Kaneohe Bay

That's what San Diego was like back in the early/mid 80's. By 9:00 AM Monday through Friday, there were helos from three RAGs (so 6 -12 aircraft) up in the air. Not to mention whatever the fleet squadrons had going on that day. So when a SAR event happened during those hours, the response was...

60 Series helos and landing on ships in tight confines

Funny thing, back when the B models were first hitting the fleet (first operational deployment 1985), it was the RA part of RAST that was getting all of the coverage. There were all kinds of video being shown in RR's of the White Elephant making RAST landings with the Perry-class deck rolling...

    TSA or T&A ???

So by that logic, we are just finding out now about the health risks of flying at altitude. Sooner than you might think. MRI systems don’t use ionizing radiation, like other imaging devices do (you know, x-ray machines) and have been in use for over 30 years with no documented adverse affects...

    TSA or T&A ???

The radiation exposure at altitude in the aluminum tube has been well-documented and many years' worth of data (60+ at this point) has been collected, pored over, conclusions drawn, and knowledge gained. Compare/contrast that to the use of back-scatter x-ray at the airport. While some say it is...

    TSA or T&A ???

This assumes profiling for the sake of securing air travel relies solely on race. Profiling goes deeper than that. It takes into account other things in addition to race. Maryland State Police will fly AW139s

Thank you for the reply. My employer (a SoCal County) contracted out its FD and Ambulance (ALS and BLS) service. Helo ditching procedure

Following up: the scenario outlined above is referred to as "Planned Ditching" in NATOPS. Bailout was a much shorter checklist. The planned ditch was used for things like anticipated fuel starvation. Bailout was recommended only if uncontrollable fire or other circumstances make it impossible to...

    Helo ditching procedure

In the H-2 FRAC Syllabus, there was a whole lesson on the bail-out option. The aircrewman jumps out with the bag of rafts (which weighed almost 90 pounds), the pilot on the left jumps out (because the collective is in the way for water egress), and the pilot in the right seat flies a short...

13 Officers kicked out of Marines including Adam Ballard

Army Land Nav "checkpoints" or markers were 1 foot square concrete pads set flush with the ground. But certain courses were used so often that there were trails connecting them all. Also, when you were doing a land nav problem with a group of 100 or so folks, you'd be at your marker, shoot your...

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

Some of us old-timers didn't have to deal with In-Flight dumping. Our aircraft didn't have enough endurance for it to be a problem. You either dumped before your flight or held it for 2.5.

NATOPS states (paraphrasing) as part of the STARTING ENGINE checklist that external DC power is connected and that the battery is AS DESIRED with a note and a caution. Huffers and Helos (aka How do you crank your ride?)

Can't contribute to this one. All two of the helos I spent time in were DC start only. The SH-2F was always an externally-powered DC start. Battery start was for emergencies only. The UH-1H/V was always a battery (we don't need no steenkin' external power) start.
