If you go intel, you could very well end up as a squardron's spy, and from rooming with our spy my first cruise, it's not a sexy job at all. Do what you think you'll enjoy more. Not which is "cooler" or what will get you more respect. Because whatever you choose, you'll be locked in at...

Lateral transfers are a crap shoot. If intel isn't looking to fill a quota when you want to apply, you're SOL. Another thing is that the board meets only twice a year, so if you don't get picked up, you have to wait awhile for another board. It's probably easier to get Intel straight out of...

    Navy Healthcare??

Think of it this way, you could run a hospital for the Navy or in the civilian sector. In the civilian sector you could have more control where you live, but if you do the Navy side, you could do 20 years, then work in the civilian sector, and draw 2 paychecks.

    Astb

Will those classes replace your other grades, or simply be averaged in? You've already dug yourself a sizable hole. 2.52*24 = 60.48 grade pts 4.0*15 (a perfect semester of 15 credits) = 60 (60+60.48)/39 = 3.09 cumulative GPA I'd be cautious in majoring in something because it's...

You may or may not be eligible yet for BDCP based on your major. Technical Majors (engineering and science fields) can be accepted their sophomore years, while it's junior year for everybody else. Don't let studying for the ASTB interfere with your academics...you can always take the ASTB...

    Chances of selection for OCS?

That sounds...scary. Do you have any previous employers who can write you something? How far removed from undergrad are you? Professors work here as well. Also, if you've been involved in community service then whoever was in charge of that should be able to write you one. Like I said, my...

    Chances of selection for OCS?

No, not everyone knows a commissioned officer (though you wouldn't know it by reading this board). I used one LOR from an employer I did a 7-month CO-OP with. Now, that was back in 2002, so things might be getting more competitive, they're requiring multiple LORs, yadda yadda, but I still...

    Pay At OCS

I don't know if it's changed since I left, but we didn't get paid until the second pay period. So if you're class starts Feb 11, you won't get paid until March 15. However, it'll be a lump sum check so you'll be up to speed after that. Not sure if they've sped things up or not.
  11. Thisguy

    Chances of selection for OCS?

No one wants to do it because it's ridiculous. The minimum is one year calc (doesn't matter if it's AP, as long as it's on your transcript) and one year calc based physics. Basically, a recruiter will ask anyone with a technical degree, because it's relatively easy to screen for the interview...

    OCS contract

That 4 year reserve commitment isn't really anything. You can choose to go inactive reserve which means no drilling, but you can be recalled if **** really hits the fan. Fun fact: academy guys have a 5 year active commitment and 3 more in the reserves. The aviation commitment is 8 years...

Did not know that. I stand corrected.
  16. Thisguy

    retroactive O-E pay

If you check out the pay charts, O-1E with 4 has the same base pay as O-1 with 4. Now the difference is that O1-E at 6 gets a raise, while O-1 is maxed out, but by then you'll have O-2 anyway, and again, O-2 with 6 is the same as O-2E with 6. It only starts to make a difference if you got 5 or...

Swimming req’s / Learning to swim

There are a couple issues here. If you're going to be SNA or SNFO, you better be able to do better than the bare-ass minimum, because you'll have extra swim classes while at OCS, and you'll have to swim in the training pipeline. That being said, the third class swim test was: -50 yards...

    any NUPOC there?

You sure do. What year in school are you in? The earlier you apply the better, because anything on your transcript is fair game. They tend to ask Calc question and Newtonian physics for anyone, since that's a requirement. I don't think they have any Bioengineers there, so that works to your...

    USMC PLC NFO vs Aviator

Well, I'll just come right out and say it. As an NFO, it's going to limit what you can fly. For instance, the F-18C is a single seater, as is the harrier, and you won't be in helos either. As for the different roles, besides the obvious, you'll have to find a superhornet guy to talk to.
  22. Thisguy

    USMC PLC NFO vs Aviator

That's right. I think they say if you're outside the 8.0 diopters, you aren't eligible either way. PRK is for people who are within the NFO standards but want to go pilot. I hope it's a typo in the original post that means to say he's outside the 20/40 range, not 20/400.

Just to piggy back on what wink said, more ofen than not, AMDOs are prior service, it's the non-prior guys that are the oddballs in that community. Not alot of college joes apply for it, because it's such a small community, and the recruiters don't know much about it, and quite frankly they're...

    NROTC to BDCP

...and there it is. Before this turns into another all out ROTC vs. OCS vs. USNA fagfest, I just want to add, regardless of commissioning source, you'll learn the most about being an officer once you actually get to the fleet. Now I'm gonna run for cover.

    Warrant officers

In the Navy, a Warrant who gets picked up for LDO is promoted to O-2E, so then it's just to years until O-3E. If the Marines do it the same way, that could explain how he made Capt so quickly. I know the Navy has LDO billets up to O-6, but I'm not sure if CWO to LDO types are capped at O-5.

    Aviation Guaruntees

The Navy does if you're going the OCS route (in fact, Navy OCS, unlike the Army and Marines, lets you apply for a certain designator for OCS). They won't say "Hey buddy, you wanna fly?" send you to OCS, then surprise! You're going supply! I think the reason the marines emphasize that they...

    Warrant officers

When talking to the troops, yeah, I reffered to the CWO as "the warrant" however, Warrants are like JOs in that you'll be on a first name basis...heck in (most) aviation communities, you can call your O-4s by their callsign/first name.
  35. Thisguy

    Warrant officers

To elaborate on the technical specialist thing: In aviation, the CWO is going to be confined to the maintenance department. That's what he did as an enlisted man, and that's what he knows best. More often than not, the CWO is going to be the MMCO (Maintenance Material Control Officer)...

Enlisted get a shot at a seat in the cockpit

It's a knife and fork school. Also, in the Navy you gotta be E-7 to apply for warrant, not like the army where there's a WOCS. The message said that there is a group waiver submitted so that E-5/E-6 can apply for the warrant pilot program. It's definitely going to be weird seeing a warrant in...

Enlisted get a shot at a seat in the cockpit

I think what's interesting is that these applicants get cut zero slack for age. Commissioned by 27th birthday? Needless to say, these guys won't be the salty MMCO Warrant types you're used to.

    resubmitting for AMDO

Obviously it can't hurt to reapply. I don't think it's a negative that they already turned you down, because you never know how many quotas there are. You may have been passed over when there were 2 or 3 quotas available, and the next one may have 10. It's alot of luck and timing.

    Ankle/knee braces

I actually asked my recruiter about this way back when. Don't wear it unless you have some documentation from medical. My recruiter said a DI will pick it out in a heartbeat. Try to go w/o if youy can. I used a neoprene knee brace, but I think that was more in my head, I was fine without it...

    Higher Moral Standard?

Moral standards or not, it bothers me when Officers get away with stuff that the troops get hammered for. For example: One of the squadron COs rolled in off liberty the last day of port at 0200 when liberty expired at 2359 (like every other port), his excuse to CAG was that he "didn't know...

You're definitely not enrolled. It would show up as MGIB in either the deductions or allotment section. If I'm not mistaken, I don't think you can enroll after being comissioned, all the officers I know that got it were OCS guys, because taking advantage of the technicality of being enlisted...
