Balding O-4 Directs Firefighter with Hi-Tech

Not being very familiar with structural fire-fighting, I can't say for certain. We have a number of fire mains, with loops throughout the ship. There are a number of hook-ups throughout the ship with hoses and whatnot stowed in the various passageways. We have five different systems onboard for...

Balding O-4 Directs Firefighter with Hi-Tech

We can vent if we need to, but it requires the CO's approval in order to cut into his ship. The biggest thing to worry about is de-watering the spaces that are on fire lest you sink the ship. Also, we have voice transmitter thingies on our SCBA masks that amplify your voice so you can actually...

    Whole person concept?

They definitely look at the whole person for aviation. I applied for SNA with a 2.605 as a Mechanical Engineer and ASTB scores that were only slightly higher than average (6/7/7/53). To my advantage I also had a crap ton of extra-curriculars and was coming from a military school background...

They can be a bit finnicky. I was able to join while in OCS and still a candidate.

    EOD officer

Inter Interesting stuff. So is the community still expanding, and are URL officers being put in charge of mobile diving and salvage units, or is that still an LDO thing? Also, how many of the URL accessions were due to lateral transfers?
  7. AllAmerican75

    EOD officer

Interesting. Both of those guys were in the class behind me. Small world; and they were pretty cool dudes. How many of those are LDO or CWO accessions? I know the SEAL and SWCC bubbas push a lot of guys through LDO/CWO school. I'm curious if EOD does the same.

    Prey for DI?

I can't tell if you're being serious or if you're trying to offer him up as DI fodder. Fire17, getting yelled at or rolled isn't a big deal. One of the many lessons that they are trying to teach you is that the yelling and the screaming can only affect you as much as you let them. Nobody died...

    EOD officer

Do you have numbers for FY 2012? It may not have been just four officers, but it was tiny as was relayed to me by both enlisted and officers. Suffice it to say, they didn't have any room for me when I was looking to redesignate.
  10. AllAmerican75

    EOD officer

Also, EOD is a very small community. They commissioned four URL (Unrestricted Line) officers this fiscal year. Three were prior enlisted (I met two at OCS) and the other was an academy grad. Also, what wlawr005 said about networking with the community is HUGE. The SPECOPS/SPECWAR bubbas don't...

That's exactly who I was talking about. I never had an experience with Bamba where he did not blown my mind with his motivational speeches or destroy my body or both.

    OCS attrition

The problem is a rather sticky wicket. The majority of the candidates coming in as SNA/NFO selectees are given the basic DODMERB physical at MEPS and then are finally given a flight physical at OCS. The problem is multifold: 1) OCS is neither the time or place to be performing full-form flight...

    OCS attrition

Having recently completed OCS, I can tell you that the majority of those attrited from aviation are due to those candidates being NPQed from aviation. Frankly, the way we handle flight physicals for OCS accessions is ridiculous and needs to be fixed.

    Need Some SWOtivation

I've heard the term used as a tongue-in-cheek reference among some of the more senior SWOs; but you're right, most just call it "The Pin" or some variation thereof.
  18. AllAmerican75

    Need Some SWOtivation

The pin is the SWO pin (aka Water Wings), that qualified SWOs wear. In order to earn it, you have to finish a bunch of qualifications and demonstrate competency in performing your duties as a Naval Officer. It encompasses a lot of butt pain, but you MUST have it in order to progress in the SWO...

    the last manned fighter

Wow, that guy takes his flight sims seriously! As for the movie, I'm not expecting it to be spectacular, but like Battleship, I'll probably end going to see it on the big screen.

    PRT at OCS

It really depends upon your class team and what they want to do. There aren't very many pull-up bars around the training area, so the only time you'd hop on one would be if you were PTing inside the barracks. If that's the case, your DI may or may not have you do pull-ups. As far as the...
  22. AllAmerican75

    PRT at OCS

Honestly, if you're even moderately in shape, you'll be fine. You'll be doing so many push-ups and running so much that you'll see real benefits, especially if you have some of the more motivating DIs who put real emphasis on getting you in shape for more than the PRT. Understand that if you...

I just tried to upload a custom avatar (JPG file, 199 x 121 pixels) and received an error message. It asked me to try again later, so I'll give that a shot, but I just wanted to provide a heads-up.

Cool, thank you. I looked at that condo that FlyFastNow posted but it's a little out of my price range for a single 01, and I'm not looking to move in anywhere until I return from deployment sometime this summer. Oh, the joys of meeting a ship that is already underway.

I was never too wild about the french toast sticks, but their regular french toast was always a high point of the day. What was your work experience prior to applying to OCS?

I was an engineer working as a beltway bandit for NASA. About the only thing I miss is the money, other than that, I'm glad I joined the Navy.

    OCS requirements question

I got picked up with a 2.605 GPA in Mechanical Engineering. Unlike other accession sources (NROTC, Academy) the OCS folks are being pulled from a far broader pool of people, so the "whole person" idea is factored in more highly. Also, the answer will always be "No!" if you don't apply. My $0.02...

Well ladies and gents, after a long hard struggle I've finally received the NAMI Whammy and am redesignating to SWO. I think you're right on. But I also think it doesn't really matter. Seeking advice on that first handgun or next weapon purchase? Ask AW!

Just went to the local petting zoo gun shop and left with a Walther P99. Does anyone have suggestions on holsters? I'm planning on using it for my primary IDPA gun, but it's small enough to make a decent CCW gun as well. I'll update with a range report when I get a chance.

My Latest Purchase (or just pictures of your current guns)

Went to Ye Olde Local Gun Shoppe today looking at compact handguns flavored in 9mm. Had every intention of just handling some guns and learning as much as I could, so when I came back from OCS, I could buy myself an "I Love Me" gift. Well, at the very end of my visit to the petting zoo, I spied...

    Life at OCS Questions

The best advice I can give as a current Officer Candidate is this: 1) Show up in the best possible shape you can. Don't worry if you can't run a 4 minute mile; the Drill Instructors and RDCs will get you squared away in short order. 2) Be prepared to be uncomfortable. You're going to be in...
