ISIS has MiGs...and fighter attack pilots are wso's!

I don't know if it is the highlight of her bio, I just thought I'd throw it out there as food for thought. To a laymen like me, it sounds like she would have been a skilled pilot, but I don't know how that works out while in the fleet.

ISIS has MiGs...and fighter attack pilots are wso's!

She was interviewed on "O'Reilly," she said that there was one jet slot in her class so she had to be at the top of her class to get it.

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

So I did some Googling, and apparently the notion that lift is generated by air flowing faster over the top of the wing and thus creating lower pressure that way is a misconception: http://www.cam.ac.uk/research/news/how-wings-really-work

You would be incorrect Sir. Don't know why my questions are troll-y.

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

Is it the air over the wings or a combination of the air flowing under and over the wings? I actually did know about the air flowing over the top creating lower pressure (Bernoulli's principle), however I also assumed the air under the wing helped too. I assumed that with adequate air flowing...

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

I see, very interesting. The reason why I thought wind blowing towards the aircraft could make takeoff more difficult was that it would counteract the engines' ability to propel the aircraft forward. Basically that wind blowing towards the aircraft will make it where the engines have to work...

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

I see; I know that the aircraft moves via air moving under and over the wings and thrust from the engines. I did not know though that high wind conditions really help this. If anything, I'd have thought higher wind conditions could make take-off and landing more difficult because of the aircraft...

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

Why do you like wind over the decks? It makes the aircraft fly better?

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

Hey all, question here, but do Navy ships and aircraft carriers drive through storms, or do they avoid such weather conditions? If so, what is it like aboard ship when going through a storm? Does the ship rock back and forth a lot? I'd think being on say a carrier would mean for a smoother ride...

Tomahawk and Hellfire Missile Programs Being Eliminated?

Yes, I understand there is classified stuff that can't be discussed on a public forum. I figured I'd ask the question because the Washington Times is a pretty right-wing publication, so it wouldn't surprise me if they are blowing things out of proportion. But it also would not surprise me with...

So I saw this and was wondering what people thought? http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/mar/25/obama-kill-navys-tomahawk-hellfire-missile-program/ Making a mountain out of a molehill or is this very bad?

Pentagon cuts aircraft carrier presence in the Gulf due to budget

If it could be done privately, I don't have a problem. However, not everyone realizes all of the above. Also you sometimes end up with a whoppter of a financial crisis where major companies that no one dreamed could fail end up failing.

Pentagon cuts aircraft carrier presence in the Gulf due to budget

Well personally, I do believe in having a form of social welfare state because I have needed it and certain members of my family have needed it. But I do not believe in the Democratic party ideal of a social welfare state. I believe in the following: 1) Universal healthcare system. Now before...

Pentagon cuts aircraft carrier presence in the Gulf due to budget

BTW, someone had made the point some posts back about how our being the global policeman is bankrupting us, but isn't it more our social welfare state that is doing that (Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security). Defense is a large expenditure, but not the majority of the budget at all.

Pentagon cuts aircraft carrier presence in the Gulf due to budget

Hey Sir, was reading through this thread, and was just curious about a few things: Does developing our own fossil fuel resources really make us independent of the Middle East? I ask because oil is priced globally, so even if the U.S. got 100% of its oil domestically, wouldn't it still be tied...

SpaceX Making History - First Company in History to Dock a Spacecraft At International Space Station

I have been following this for the last few days, they launched the Falcon 9 rocket with the Dragon capsule on Tuesday, then Thursday had to perform a series of tests to make sure the Dragon spacecraft was working fine, now they are docking. They had to perform multiple tests on it to make sure...

Marine Corps to Open Infantry Officer Course to Women

But flying a plane versus carrying 140 lbs of gear over rugged terrain are very different things. There is a significant size and strength differential between men and women. That's why we have separate men's and women's sports teams and separate physical standards for male and female police...

    Russian T-50 better than F-22???

I would hope the Russians haven't been so able to infiltrate America that they have been able to steal a bunch of secrets regarding something like the F-22.
  21. R

Marine Corps to Open Infantry Officer Course to Women

The potential problem I see with the whole thing is that it ignores reality. We have separate men's and women's physical fitness standards for the military branches, for police, and firefighters, and separate men's and women's teams in sports. The reasons for this are because women are so much...

    Russian T-50 better than F-22???

I know I'm bumping a few-month-old thread here, but just wanted to say/ask a few things: 1) How could Putin say this new aircraft is superior to the F-22 when so many of the F-22's actual capabilities are classified? 2) It took quite a while to design and engineer the F-22, in terms of the...

    Chinese Carrier

Okay. It means a lot of things. It means their domestic economy fell prey to the recession like every other economy. And the speed at which they flooded their economy with the money shows that they are not concerned much with what it's spent on so much as that it gets spent immediately, which...

    Chinese Carrier

Never been to China. I don't think anyone can claim to have a true understanding of what's happening in China, that's one of the problems right now. They sure do, I'm not denying that, but it will hit a limit or a slow-down in the speed of its growth if/when their economy encounters a bust...

    Chinese Carrier

The problem is that much of what is "factual" in economics is also theoretical. Things like GDP, aggregate demand, etc...those are subjective terms (some economists have argued there is no such thing even as aggregate demand, for example) that can be difficult to measure. But that's just the...

Well I figured I should explain my point of view is all, didn't mean to make a post too long for folks to read.
  29. R

    Chinese Carrier

Well for starters, China's economy tanked after 2008 just the same as everyone else's. China does not have enough domestic demand to drive their own economy, they are primarily dependent on exports. The government there I believe is terrified of an uprising occurring, as there is a lot of ethnic...

Well that I think remains to be seen. Personally, I think much of their so-called growth as of late is nonsense, just a bubble that is going to burst on them, but that's a separate discussion altogether.

    Steve Jobs is dead.

I know this is a bit late, but just wanted to add this, but another heavy influence on the design of the Apple products was Dieter Rams, the German industrial designer, who was a huge influence on Apple's Senior Vice President of Industrial Design, Johnathan Ive. If you look at Rams's designs...

    Chinese Carrier

Just a few questions on this subject, but: 1) Isn't a carrier ship itself, all by its lonesome, not much? Doesn't it need to be supported and protected by a bunch of other ships as well...? (a carrier battlegroup?) 2) Wouldn't the worry right now more be about China building up an aggressive...

Gates gone -- Panetta at DOD, Patraeus to CIA

Patraeus doesn't strike me as the type who, upon retiring, would become very outspoken and critical of Obama. I think part of his popularity is because he is pretty apolitical. I also don't know if he would run against his former boss (if he intends to run for President someday) because that...

China Maneuvers for U.S. Defense Contracts

I get what you're saying, it's generally a basic tenet of the market, but I think in the case of the Chinese there is more to it is the thing. For example, while a Western company might move on, maybe these Chinese manufacturers might also be able to find a ready supply of other firms to replace...

China Maneuvers for U.S. Defense Contracts

Yes, but in buying those companies, the Chinese acquire the quality-control knowledge they have, so they aren't really "Chinese" brands per se. volvo itself is still a European company, but they sold their Volvo car brand to Ford, who then sold it to a Chinese company. My understanding is...

China Maneuvers for U.S. Defense Contracts

Yes, but from what I have read, the Chinese severely lack in the area of quality-control right now, they need us to go over there to make sure they do it or they just don't. I know they build a lot of low-margin stuff, the higher-margin, more complex things, I'm not sure. I don't think...

China Maneuvers for U.S. Defense Contracts

I think we are only relying on Russia for that, not China. China only put a man into space to orbit around the Earth, otherwise their space program is nothing special (last I checked anyway). Also, provided Spacex is successful, we will be able to launch our astronauts by ourselves. We are...

China Maneuvers for U.S. Defense Contracts

A Chinese-built Marine One just sounds really, I don't know, insulting. It's not like America is some Third World country that has to purchase aircraft from other countries, it's the United States of America, maker of the F-22 Raptor, put a man on the moon, home of Boeing, Lockheed-Martin...
