    Helmet fitting and gear Q's...

Hopefully whatever they've ordered will be something more useful (to MOST people, I understand what gatordev is saying) than the old one. I tried using it once and promptly tossed it.

    service transfer question...

If you're BDCP and want to go the USMC route, why don't you just start working on it now? It would be MUCH easier to talk with a Marine OSO and see what he can do to get you out of BDCP and into a Marine program than to try to find a way once you're already commissioned. The way numbers ebb...

    Protecting your Hearing

Kind of pointless if you have the inboard headphone propped up over (not on) your ear so you can hear/understand the co-pilot and FE. Save your money, the TELEX works fine. I know you have to use the ones the IP gives you in VP-30, but your Fleet squadron will give you your own set. I fly...

    Helmet Visors

One of my old Skppers (NFO) decided to sit there on a takeoff that ended up in a runway departure. Supposedly he got tossed pretty hard. I've also heard you can make coins stand on end on that thing due to some kind of magnetic field. Never tried it.

    AF vs. Marines

There was recent thread over at baseops.net discussing the use of OTS as an "officer faucet". From what I gathered, when Academy or AFROTC numbers projections aren't meeting forecasted needs, they open more OTS slots to "off the street" guys. I'd post a link, but my coffee is getting cold.

    Return to the Moon?

Re-read the post, think about the venue kmac's describing and what you've heard about what goes on in that training. You won't be in a position to light up ANYONE. kmac, I remember the same speech, I was actually laughing. thread re-rail: the moon rulez (just for Fly)

    AF vs. Marines

Doing what? Any Marine BTDTs who have any thoughts on this? Nothing defensive about debunking bad gouge. According to this logic based on fewer officers per enlisted, does this mean non-flying aviators are doing extra work to make up for the lack of troops? So these guys are turning...

    Making the decision

FYI, military pilots in the USN, USMC, and USAF are all officers, not enlisted personnel. "Enlisted pilots" isn't a legitimate term (at least not in this day and age, and I'm not going to explain what it used to mean). Not that you'd be expected to know that as a high school student...
  18. zab1001

    AF vs. Marines

Right, so USN pilots do nothing but fly and then get to go home. Negative. We also hold ground billets and collateral duties. My Marine buddies that are in squadrons don't work any more than I do. If you're going to try to play the "Marine first" card at least get your facts straight...

    Dumb things you've overheard

    Dumb things you've overheard

Thought of another one, re-qual for flight physiology. Instructor- utilizing pure O2 will have the bottom line effect of increasing the quality of your night vision Nugget Ensign- yeah, but if the O2 mask only covers your mouth and nose, no way the O2 would even hit your eyeballs

    Dumb things you've overheard

There's a great thread about 'dumb things people say' going on over at Tuckermax.com, so I thought we could get some laughs regarding the same thing in a military environment. A few from personal experience: _________________________ VTs, T-34 brief for a night fam. Two students (me being...

    Saluting

JOPA is a nebulous, shadowy organization striving to help JOs avoid the man, duck busy work, fly as much as possible, tear it up off hours, maintain an even strain, look the other way, CYA, and generally support the rights of your average O-1 through O-3. Seriously, JOPA is just a term used...

Firing at us? Trying to help you?

Just to clarify, I never suggested any military forces shoot back. I brought up the question of ROE and what our troops are supposed to do. I spent about 15 minutes typing a response, previewed it, and realized we're going to agree to disagree. Rather than spend the afternoon playing back...

Firing at us? Trying to help you?

Nope. I don't buy it. I'm thinking hard, but I can't recall any other humanitarian effort where survivors fired on or threatened rescue forces in order to 'coerce' them to help. No SAR manual I've ever used had a chapter on "Guy with an AK aiming at you Signalling Technique". Hey, if I'm...

Role of the Military after Katrina

Because I'm sure those guys have nothing to do other than PT and play basketball. What's their MOS (or whatever they call it in the USAF)? Anyone know what those guys were doing the previous 12 hours? Were they aircrews getting a little downtime before their next hop? Who did the reporters...

    Quitting USNA...

Corona, no need for snide comments. That's a warning. BRM, I've known former academy guys who went NROTC successfully. However, with the current plethora of junior officers, it may be harder to make the switch. Your best bet is to go with the program you feel you'd have the best shot with.

    Uniforms while Traveling on Leave

It actually happened last Feb. Whatever. I see your point. I guess I¨have "mil guy" written on my forehead (even without a "high and stupid", a yut yut t-shirt, web belt on my jeans, and queer issued sunglasses). Even in civvies, I've had plenty of people strike up conversations with me...

    Uniforms while Traveling on Leave

No doubt. I saw an Army Sgt forced to hand over anything with a pin and frog clip on his uniform at security. Being the Army, that was A LOT of knick knacks. Total BS, but whatever (luckily he had some civvies to change into). No way I'm going to risk something like THAT for the chance at a...

    The Citadel-good NROTC program??

Blanket statements like this don't work. Again, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and hope you mean, "ERAU will not teach you how to be an officer, the NROTC program will". (disclaimer: I didn't go to ERAU) I hesitated to respond here, because I don't want the thread to...

    The Citadel-good NROTC program??

Jesus Chr!st. Let's not turn this into another ERAU bash. ERAU has NROTC, NROTC will prepare you to ba an officer. The Citadel/VMI/whatever military school runs their own program along with NROTC, which will also prepare you. Keep it on track.

OCS type training for all Naval Officers?

So the questions are: Are officers in the Navy right now of such low quality that we need this program? Will this "OCS thing" correct the problem? Considering the cost, would it be worth it? Can the Navy afford the time/cost? Just some questions to feed the discussion (which I...

OCS type training for all Naval Officers?

For about a year. Maybe. Find me 3 random Fleet guys and odds are you won't be able to discern their commissioning source. Not arguing, you make a good point, just noting what I've experienced. Since I can't get Steve's article to open, I guess I'll ask everyone in general, what...

    Just selected, got questions

The short version: Less pilots per squadron, more sim training (i.e. pilot and tactical trainers), talk of not every pilot making Patrol Plane Commander. Don't count on many airshows or non-essential trips (the days of "airways navigation training...to Vegas" are probably over). Don't...
