Depends on squadron and location. For FDNF squadrons its 0. For fleet guys in Jax, based on the sim schedules I see it's not alot, but that's by their choice. (Usually they only use the sims for Inst checks, ASW stuff and certain other evaluations.) In the WWS I've got 80 hours in the sim in...
Another note about ditching/autos. Several recent mishaps have proven that the -60 airframe is extremely survivable if you hit the ground/water with some forward airspeed. A 0/0 is extremely hard to do IRL and has a high probability of getting you killed due to excessive sink rate at the...
Oh, I have no doubt about that. I was just pointing out the broad range of personnel involved. Said O-6 was a pilot. Though to the best of my knowledge so far only an aircrewman has put a hole in an aircraft from the inside out while in flight. :)
Sadly it's not just the junior enlisted who have these issues. Everyone from Aircrewman who are supposed to be proficient having ND's with M11's and .50's to an O-6 leaving a hole in a ready room chair have happened in the not too distant past.
Oh and my favorite part of the article.
"and...
Why oh why do you keep insisting on making useless posts in threads that have no call for it? Why can't you stick to something you have some expertise in?
At least the Army has finally realized that ACU sucks. They should be in the new Multicam soon. Would be nice if we got a clue and went that route also.
Ugly/ridiculous looking uniforms - check
Not doing anything to actually make your seabag smaller - check
Uniforms that are not at all...
NASNI as well as most bases in CA require a smog check to get the sticker. There is actually an agreement between the military and the state of CA basically saying that we will follow CA emissions standards. Sometimes you can get the smog check done at the Autoport and they are pretty lenient...
Several bases have had that option for awhile now. Just have to have it properly secured in your house. (ie not allowed in the Lodge, BEQ/BOQ or Barracks.)
We bought one when we were in Japan and we loved it. It was really convenient for renting/buying movies as well as entire seasons of TV shows. We absolutely hated the quality of TV on base so it was worth it for us. Also the amount and quality of streaming movies that Netflix offers was not...
The place you are referring to is Oxford Leather. Those aren't Navy-Style, those are the real deal, including full length Bomber Jackets. (Of course he has added some extras/upgrades) They have a website, but it's about $50 cheaper to buy it in person than order it on the web. IIRC
So much crap goes on between those 2 countries all the time and most people never hear about it. The odds that the UN will do something useful against NK.... any takers?
There is a way to do a partial, but good luck getting a PSD to figure it out. Your best bet at this point would probably be to try and get an "advance" on your travel pay. Again good luck getting PSD to figure out how to do their job. As far as the BAH, if you are TDY enroute on a PCS then...
A tip learned from serious distance runners...Learn to run on the white lines. Sometimes the summer heat on blacktop can melt the soles of regular running shoes.
Actually according to he JFTR if it takes longer than 30 days you are allowed to claim interest. I don't remember the section off the top of my head but it's in there. You have to get a copy of your credit card statement and can only claim interest associated with TAD charges obviously. (Not...
Anyone know of a place in the Southeast that has either the Sprints or KSOs in a 40? Everyplace seems to be sold out and no one knows when they'll get more.
Unfortunately the next time the opportunity for that type of deployment came up and real lives were on the line, CAG said no way would he take his jets off the boat for a bunch of helos. So that time the KHK stayed home and another boat got to do the real work. Funny how some sort of politics...
I have to say I "enjoyed" the article about the potential of a helo CAG. Funny how everyone but the pointy nose guys think it would work fine. How many times has anyone walked into CVIC for a strike (or any planning) team and found a fixed wing guy who knew anything about any of our missions...
+1 for Aeroweather
Also Navmonster.com
Has an iphone specific site and allows you to view metar/taf, IFR charts, VFR charts, Terminal area charts, Aerodrome info, approach plates, etc. Charts, approach plates and an IFR supp all in 1 website.
I actually got a chance to check out the Phantom that was used for the low altitude, (Below sea level), high speed run. They took it out to Death Valley and went full burner to see what happened. Poor bird looked like a blow torch had been taken to every leading edge. It was unflyable after that.
Actually there are some civilian companies operating Phrogs now, and the civvie variant of the 60 is the H70. Not flown by a lot of people yet, but it's out there and you can get the type rating. (Even some logging companies operating the 47 of all things.)
Sadly in my experience I have found that both Squadron personnel and PSD/CSD have no clue when it comes to alot of issues, HOR moves being one. I would highly recommend downloading a copy of the JFTR and going through applicable sections. (I don't remember off the top of my head which that...
One would think that with all the crap fixed wing guys get, helo guys could at least get a moving map or something more current/useful than late 1980's technology in a "new" helo in 2010.
Actually when you really think about it, it's a pretty freakin inventive way to solve a big problem. Fortunately/unfortunately a change in power/leadership in the Soviet Union at the time killed the project.
Instead of flying in tons of transports, which would most likely have been shot down...
There should be no doubt in anyone's mind the dangers involved in being on the flight deck, and especially the destructive nature of a parted wire. On the Kitty a Rhino had a wire snap similar to this video. The wire basically cut the tail off of one of the helos sitting in the hole when it...
I dealt with a Destroyer CO on a det that was almost exactly the same way. Add in some Caine Mutiny leadership traits and there you go. Sadly those seem to be the norm rather than the exception. You would think there would be some way to weed those types out...
I actually route the CEP wires up and around the back of my ears, then out the back of the helmet. Has worked great with no issues. The other big thing if you are going to use CEP's, I highly recommend getting the custom molded ones. Those make a huge difference in both sound quality and...
As previously stated HCS doesn't exist anymore. If you want to be considered for -84 or -85, then do your job, do it well and think before making comments to those who know.
The electric pump is designed to automatically turn on and take over for the lost pump in flight. (There is some other logic in place where the system attempts to automatically islolate whatever leak may have caused the pump to fail.) It's a bit complex to write up in a post.
That blade design is similar to the 60Ks I've seen. However the Japanese have added some of the design elements from the first picture. Their tips actually sweep a little forward before dropping down and sweeping back.
Though I never heard an actual number associated with the noise decrease...
Actually the Japanese 60K has a similar design already implemented. It lowers torque requirements while also reducing noise. I think Sikorsky has done similar research with a few different designs over here.
While that might be nice for a ground unit, or look cool in an internet video, there are more factors involved in installing that in an airframe. My first thought is, no f'n way someone is going to be able to carry enough ammo onboard to get real use out of that thing. .50 rounds ain't light...
Some guys got "lucky" with only having a 7 year commitment after wings. And the old helo commitment was 6 years after wings. Of course all that has been changed to 8 years across the board.
Subaru all the way. My wife owns a Forester and I own a new WRX. Plenty of room for people and gear, AWD, great handling and performance. I've owned trucks before and the occasional benefits never outweigh the mileage, crappy handling and size.
BTW the new WRX's have beefed up trannies.
Of course that is with a brand new UAV, ideal weather, and an FFG with no AEGIS running. Any takers on the odds of it working in 5 years on a DDG or CG at night with the deck pitching and rolling in the rain?
Just like everything else today, there isn't enough money to train crews on the systems we have in place already. When was the last time anyone worked with NSFS where the ship actually hit the target/island or made the right corrections before 6 hours had gone by? I'd hate to see the problems...
Coming from HS-14, we dealt with HSL-51 on the carrier all the time, as well as on the 2 permanent small boy dets. I have no problems working with them, the guys are great for the most part. I'm just saying that I wouldn't want to work in an HSL squadron.
As said above, HSL-51 in Atsugi has a special VIP det that flies 2 modified SH-60F's. Some of the pilots are Super JO's and some are retreads from other areas. The det follows the Admiral around and are usually stationed on the USS Blue Ridge. From the guys I know there that fly/flew them...
In some instances it can be unsafe to turn the boat for winds or turning into the winds actually brings them out of limits. For example I've seen 50+ knots of wind actual, but with the ship driving downwind at 25kts that made for acceptable winds over the deck for preflight, rotor engagement...
When I was over there we kept being told between FY13-FY15. Of course none of the infrastructure buildup had even been started and that stuff will take years to complete before anything can move. Then right as I was leaving there was a big public scandal where the "Mayor" of Yamaguchi was...
