"The War Within": Woodward on the Surge

That is why I said "ironically." Bush was attempting to portray the image of a strong, optimistic leader who would lead us to victory among a country who was greeting us with open arms as liberators, but his insistence on doing so when the situation was getting worse gave people a much less...

"The War Within": Woodward on the Surge

Perhaps, but just like the JCS can tell sniff when a President is pretending to take their advice, John Q. Public can still sniff when the President is bullshitting them. He can't give a flowery speech about the situation in Iraq amidst reports of escalating violence and expect people, who are...

"The War Within": Woodward on the Surge

Very interesting read. I find it ironic that a lot of the public's negative opinion of Bush arises from his inability to publicly acknowledge that the strategy in Iraq was failing when it was plainly obvious that it was, yet Bush acknowledged just that in private.

Was simply rebutting the people who sharply criticized MIDN because he said that "officers must live off base." The truth is, if you're single, MIDN is correct at some installations.

To go Nuke or not to go Nuke....do you have an option?

Personally, I went nuke because specwar was out of the question since I'm a vagina when it comes to cold water. Being on a fast attack at least allows me an opportunity to be a part of those ops, even if it's on the more boring side of things. And if I get boomers, I guess I'll just ride it out...

Military pay is public. Just Google "military pay tables" and "military BAH/BAS." Add the two together and that's what your gross yearly salary will be. Make sure that you are looking at the tables dated for 2008. You'll be at O-1 for your first two years, then O-2 for two years after that, then...

To go Nuke or not to go Nuke....do you have an option?

I misinterpreted your tone, then. Smileys would go a long way in conveying that over the internet ;-). The main reason I harped on you, though, is post-OCS the SS qualified CMC at my recruiting district sat with me for 1-1.5 hours briefing me on sub life, JO duties, and general advice on how to...

And if you get rid of BS government programs like welfare, then the government won't have to worry about investing in people so that they don't have to pay for their substinance, or worry about using an entire military installation to paint and clean people's private homes.

I think what Otto means by too many people getting degrees is that the job market for positions requiring degrees becomes saturated; thus, many people with degrees end up working a job they otherwise could have worked without one at a similar salary. I worded my post poorly in that it implies...

I used to lift prior to OCS as well. The reason I tell you to switch your routine is because PT at OCS is very aerobic. They don't care how much you can bench. Unfortunately, there is only enough time in the day for most people to physically train for one type of goal. You don't have to...

Flash, I don't deny that someone fresh out of college with a bachelor's in liberal arts can find a good job (good being defined as >$40k per year to start with benefits and advancement opportunity); however, I do contest your assertion that it is the "norm" for someone to do so. And what would you be doing if you weren't in the military? Unlike you, I spent a few years working in the corporate world. The average Joe with a liberal arts or "business" degree earns about $30-35k/year coming out of college, which amounts to a whopping $12-15 an hour. Some of these jobs come...

I was a freshman at SUNY Albany, and, typical to freshman, was planning on sleeping until 935 before my 945 class. Having lived in NY for most of my life, the clothing tax is the only thing that has changed as far as what gets taxed as far back as I can remember. The legislature doesn't wake up one day and suddenly decide that you need to now pay a sales tax on cereal. The thing that has changed is the %...

The SWO/N were talking about that on one of the first days at nuke school. Apparently it's a really fun experience, if you define fun as such activities as putting your balls in a vice grip and turning the handle tighter. I did enjoy the part where pepper spray is considered chemical warfare...

The bonuses for nuke are higher than the bonuses for being a conventional SWO, both on the sub and SWO side. Anyone have the official navy male prt standards? + How to schedule a PRT?

What I meant by a "checkmark" is that your score doesn't matter, so long as you pass. "Passing" for submitting an application is good low. Could've changed since I applied, but this is the first I've heard of it.

    Officer Promotions

The promotion rates are something like 75-80% for CDR and 50-60% for CAPT. Promotion to JG is automatic. Unless you get a DUI or murder someone or some other egregious violation of the law, you are going to get promoted. If someone needs a service photo of you on file, they'll find you and get it.
