    no more bear crawls

I can't think of a single exercise at OCS that had a better efficiency of giving you an overall body strength workout than bear-crawls. It's not just pain for pain's sake -- they worked.

    no more bear crawls

Bear crawl = get in a pushup position. Inch your hands toward your feet and arch your back up. Now move forward. Keep doing so as DI yells crawl and you yell aye sir. It's actually a really good strength workout for shoulders/arms/legs that I'd keep doing if it didn't look absolutely ridiculous...

    What happens after OCS

Bad gouge. You go to SWOS after OCS. It is 3 weeks long. Then you go to the ship. EDIT: Looks like the guy above me got it. It was 3 weeks long for SWOS as of late June, did not know of the change. I guess it's good that they're changing post OOD SWOS since every SWO I've encountered says that...

    Weight Loss

While this is correct, I would recommend that the person do whichever activity he dislikes most first. I used to blow off running a lot when I was lifting simply because I didn't like it at the time, so the fact that I felt that I was already working out for 45 min to an hour made me just say...

    Weight Loss

I most definitely have less body fat % now than I did going into OCS. My workout consisted of solely anaerobic activity; the kind that you claim will keep you lean.

    Weight Loss

I'll be honest here: I was 170-175 going into OCS as a weight lifter at 5'9", which was too heavy for my height. I definitely could've afforded to lose some pounds, and I dropped 25 lbs in 2.5 months doing the aerobic-heavy workouts at OCS paired with their no-dairy, no fatty condiments and no...

    Weight Loss

Agree with Zissou. There really is no magic shortcut for this. Calories in < calories out = weight loss. I will say, though, that 45 minutes of cardio can easily be knocked down to 20 if you are willing to give 110% for the duration, but most people don't have the mental discipline to do that.

    true or false?

When one applies via OCS, aren't the communities selected independent of each other? In other words, the OP didn't get pilot because he listed NFO and SWO, but because the boards deemed him unqualified for pilot, regardless of his other two listings? I get the impression that the OP thinks that...

What are my chances of becoming a Naval Aviator? (Pilot)

To answer your question more directly: No. One of the advantages of OCS is that you know what your designator is going to be before you make the commitment. If you sign the contract for pilot, then you will be a pilot unless you become not-physically qualified (NPQ), you drop on request, or you...

How does the election affect military aviation?

Something that was striking to me was McCain's response to one of the first questions in the debate the other night regarding social security. Rather than address the issues with social security, healthcare, etc., he went immediately into the financial and energy mess. You would think that a...

New thread--Adjusting the military retirement rules?

It's easy to say that military members should contribute to retirement with an officer's salary. Your enlisted guys make about half your salary with similar time in service (not including bonuses). Supporting a family and then putting a significant amount away for retirement to actually make a...

New thread--Adjusting the military retirement rules?

I hadn't really thought about it before, but I agree with the issues regarding retirement starting at 20 years. However, I don't like the idea of making retired military wait until 60s to collect on their pensions. This line of work is generally more dangerous than other professions, so I don't...

    The DEBATE: Round 2

So far, Obama's got this nailed. McCain sounds like a Democrat half the time, and the difference between the two of them is so nuanced that the average voter isn't going to care. Obama is also deflecting McCain's attacks very well.

THE VP DEBATE: Thursday Night Fights, Round 1 ... WHO "WON" .. ???

Biden didn't "lay out McCain's voting history." A bill in the Senate is rarely focused on just one issue. To accuse a Senator of voting for/against something out of context of what the bill fully does is useless, but it sure makes for good soundbyte politics.

THE VP DEBATE: Thursday Night Fights, Round 1 ... WHO "WON" .. ???

My impressions thus far: 1) The time allotted for answers does not allow either candidate to provide a fully detailed response to, well, anything. They just go back and forth quoting the same sound bites that you might hear on a commercial. As such, this is hardly useful for gaining any sort...

    Been doing some thinking

One guy I interviewed with tried to impress ADM Donald by pointing out that he was president of his fraternity. The ADM's response was "That's not leadership, that's being a glorified secretary." I don't think being treasurer of the aviation club is going to earn cgoetz too many points. If...

She's angry/upset because she wants to keep you around, and is worried that you'll be killed or something. How are you going to feel when the guy off the street is leading you, though? If you really want to be a SEAL officer, then apply for it and bust your ass in the interim getting in shape. What happens after OCS

Yes, but SWOS isn't that long, and I don't think the Navy will pay for the move until you get PCS orders to your permanent duty station. It is rare for a conventional SWO to be assigned to a carrier, period. Also, it behooves you to qualify on the Aegis system, so your first sea tour is likely...

    CNOs guidance on diversity

Burning questions about OCS, flight school and Navy life

As a newly commissioned O-1, I make ~$48,000 a year. That includes sub pay. ~$34,000 of that is taxable. That total annual taxable income does seem low -- O-1 salary < 2 years is ~$30k.

    Pushup question regarding fatigue

One of the things that helped me bring my 75 PU to 95 PU at OCS was the ability to stay in the PU position for a long period of time and not get tired. new a-pool procedures

OCSers tend to be older, so that probably has something to do with it. Average age of my class was 25. When I was 22, I would occassionally go out on Thurs. and show up to work half-drunk on Fri, too.
