    Why are you Leaving?

Not likely, we will still fill them despite being at 49% manning at the O-3 level, at least in the Hornet. Around 2012 we were handed a couple, and even though we were short aircrew, we filled them. Prior to that, in the 2008-2010 timeframe, dudes fresh out of the RAG were filling them. The...

    Why are you Leaving?

I wonder if there is any way to get a guarantee of no IAs or PCS. Life is actually decent at the only squadron with working jets. And I imagine as flight hours continue to decrease the available number of DLs to send to the RAG as IPs will follow...

Thanks bro. I'll pass this on.

    Why are you Leaving?

There is some argument about whether twice passed over, separated Captains will receive separation pay. At least on the ready room level. Some say it is illegal per Title 10, others say that is precisely why the Marine Corps created this Continuation MARADMIN. The whole thing is shady. Taking...

    Why are you Leaving?

That is unfortunately what life in the fleet has become for the Marine Hornet community. And why they have resorted to measures such as "Continuation" vice actually taking a look at the actual issues of why Captains don't want to stay in this organization.

    Why are you Leaving?

Is his job synonymous with a particular mission of counter air, that is primarily defensive? We had someone do the same. We were told, "Remember why you signed up to be Marines. We work harder than everyone else." And you're completely correct. Fitness Reports are all about ground...

    Why are you Leaving?

Oh I don't know, being able to hit a fast moving target with a 500lb GBU-54 and a CEP not much larger than the height of an average man is pretty precise. 20MM with laser ranging isn't bad either.

    USMC TACAIR future

Treetop Flyer is right - The F-35 is super top heavy currently, but that'll change with time. I have buddies who have made the transition, and the two who are in the one "fleet" squadron are not really enjoying life at the moment. As for AMRAAM make believe - The only guys not playing make...

B-1's and B-52's as flying arsenals of air to air missiles?

Grumpy much? This is just a discussion on the internet... Not that serious. Lots of assumptions there... Which are incorrect. Nonetheless, no one here needs to prove himself to some one over an internet forum. And I wasn't making the APG-73 argument... But if you've done much (any?) FI, I...

B-1's and B-52's as flying arsenals of air to air missiles?

Beat me to it. While I wish the Marine Corps had purchased a number of high lot E/F Hornets, at least so I was getting more than 8 hours of flight time a month, an upgraded F-15C with v3 radar will always be a superior BVR platform to a high lot Super, as will a dark gray Eagle, though obviously...

B-1's and B-52's as flying arsenals of air to air missiles?

I'd prefer to simply have a section of F-22's behind me on the lane, a lot more feasible and flexible, if we're going to spend money somewhere... But if we want to be fanciful, why don't we have that Airborne Laser platform thing on goalie cap? No need to worry about kinematics...

    Avg Hours/Month

I don't know much about that save for the squadrons who are deployed to a combat zone, boat or not, are pretty healthy, at least until they return home. Everyone else, including UDP-deployed squadrons are hurting pretty bad. Each time a squadron gets back, their jets get divided up amongst the...

    Avg Hours/Month

Marine Hornet guys are averaging about 8-10 hours a month. Last year when we dropped to 10 jets per squadron didn't help. And no, 100 hours a year doesn't mean 2 or 3 flights per week. Most hops are 1.3 and very few of those are BFM unless they're initial codes for a dude, or you're in a work...

    Navy or MC Aviation?

Not sure if you're interested in TacAir, but I'd imagine the Navy is probably a decent bit healthier than the MC Hornet and Harrier communities. Could be a reason to go Navy if you're primarily interested in flying. Oh, I realize I haven't posted here in years... I'm standing GDO.

What is (in your opinion) the BEST fighter plane that has EVER served in the Navy / Marine Corps?

I honestly have no idea - Although when you consider the fact that the F-16's motor makes the same amount of thrust at MIL that one of ours does at MAX, that has to count for something.

What is (in your opinion) the BEST fighter plane that has EVER served in the Navy / Marine Corps?

The Eagle is obviously a great 2 circle fighter, but can anyone attest to its nose authority when compared with the Hornet? I was talking with a previous instructor who had flow the Strike Eagle, and all types of the Hornet - A through F, said he'd take the Hornet without a second thought when...

What is (in your opinion) the BEST fighter plane that has EVER served in the Navy / Marine Corps?

I bet that scared the hell out of some unsuspecting people out in the rice paddies. Speaking of the F-4, why do the small motor legacy Hornets have the same amount of thrust? Even with EPE engines, the Hornet still isn't a true Cat IV aircraft. If I had a wishlist, at the top would be having...

    Scariest Day/Night Flying

Forgive my ignorance, but I'm trying to understand this Vortex Ring State, with a beer in hand. Essentially, what is happening, is that the downwash from the rotors at a high power setting are circling back around to the top of the helo and pushing it down at a faster rate because its lack of...

Dear Boss, I quit! A letter to Air Force leadership....

Would you call an F-117 pilot a "fighter pilot?" Better yet, would you tell the Sea Harrier pilots in the Faulklands that they weren't? I enjoy some good-nature ribbing of my Harrier buddies, but I wouldn't go so far as to say they weren't fighter pilots. Granted, there are far better...

Dear Boss, I quit! A letter to Air Force leadership....

I think the author makes some valid points that stretch across all the services regarding aviation. Granted, I have zero fleet experience, but I keep up with close friends who are in a sister community that are routinely getting 5-10 hours of flight time a month, and in a couple instances, going...

  35. BarrettRC8

Marine Corps to Open Infantry Officer Course to Women

Not within a unit. Sure, a lot of guys I know go home with their share of women, but few of them are within the military ranks. I'd say women are far more likely to go home with someone from their unit than a guy, even if only due to numbers and women essentially having the pick of the litter...

    New Initiatives from SECNAV

Yes, along with two other issues. I'm considering getting a track bike, but after dealing with the pain of doing stupid classes and endless paperwork I'll no longer be riding on the road. Of course, the two other bigger reasons would be 1) Witnessing three fatalities on the roads around Austin...

I've just read 2 books that I highly recommend:

I read A Nightmare's Prayer when I was in Kingsville and I too thoroughly enjoyed it. I actually flew with one of the guys Lt Col Franzak speaks about in the book while I was in Primary, though I obviously wasn't aware of it at the time.

New Skipper for the Sun Downers (VFC-111)

Spoke to him this weekend while I was down there for Fighter Det. He really does seem like a great guy. His brother was a Marine Harrier type and was my OSO - If it wasn't for him and all the strings he was able to pull, I wouldn't be here.

most useful flight training prior to entry

Quite dramatic music for a T-34C - Sounds like it was pulled right out of Band of Brothers. Good memories though. And to mirror what everyone else has said, save your money. An instrument rating would help you in Primary, but no further than that, and not much more than a solid work ethic...
