    MH-60S with a M197 20mm cannon!

Shoot from the hip for the most part. There is a laser mounted on for rough sighting. However it is mainly done via grease pencil a-la Vietnam. There was some talk of trying to get rough mil numbers based on MTS FOV and range, etc. The dampening system is in no way tied to AFCS. If you read...

Russian Akula sub spends a month in Gulf of Mexico - undetected!

How often do we have to tell the media exactly what our military forces are actually capable of and/or have been doing? Typical media BS groping for attention.

Admiral McRaven on bin Laden raid

Concur, we should have pulled out long ago...especially considering where Karzai's true loyalties lie. Michael Yon as always has a great assessment of the situation, I'll have to see if I can find it to post.

    A Friendly Reminder.

Reminded me of another video I have seen. 2 guys in an L-19 were doing a video study of some beetle infestation of trees or something in the mountains. The pilot never noticed the constantly increasing altitude until the stall horn went off. The video ends with their crash into the trees...

Marines place $22.5M order for the Colt .45 M1911

Seems like more units are going "back" to the 1911. I know of several SWAT units that have recently been swapping out their Glocks for some variant of 1911. I love the 1911 and will never get rid of mine. However makes you wonder what other guns were in the competitions, M&P .45, Glock, Sig?

Yes please! These seem much more useful than the rapid prototyping machines that you can get. With a full size route, you could do up some pretty spiffy stuff.

    Guns and "Young" Ensigns

One thing to consider is what kind of toys you plan on buying. Most pilots end up getting attached to some form of M-4. In the past this wasn't a big issue, but recently Caifornia changed their rules and they no longer "honor" the military assault weapons permit like they used to. So if...

    Scariest Day/Night Flying

For Navy they teach some advanced aero in addition to Ps. Not sure about the green side, but we do also get some Air to Air stuff. Helo v helo and helo v jet. Probably the most fun I've had in a -60 was going 2v2 against some Air Force -60G's.

    Pentagon Gay Pride Event

From what I have seen it is more of a CYA event. More than that is is a wakeup call to guys as to what the military really considers sexual assault. ie if a guy and a girl are both so drunk that they dont remember the night prior and happen to wake up in bed next to each other, obviously it...

    Carry Weapon Capacity

Of course this is just philosophy, but... You aren't trying to fight WWIII with your CCW. Go for something with stopping power that you are comfortable with. 7-8 rounds is plenty. Once you clear those out, then have 1, preferably 2 spare mags just in case. Odds are if you unload in a...

Another helo vs the world thread (moved from helmets)

I was flying F, H, S for awhile. Now S only. Honestly I still don't buy that the tailwheel location buys us anything, (except the ability to be a shitty pilot and fly a jacked up profile for unpreps) but ends up costing us in the long run. ie Deck footprint, stricter landing limits, and oh by...

Another helo vs the world thread (moved from helmets)

In theater meaning already onboard the big grey boat when it's underway in some nameless body of water in close proximity to some nameless country that wants to send a large group of small boats after us.

Another helo vs the world thread (moved from helmets)

Night HUD is huge. Anything that's an improvement over the current abomination is welcome. However to the weapons on target comment, might there be some super hi-tech way to include the M-197 pipper in this? Just a thought. It's not like we have had helmet mounted HUD/sighting systems in...

    APKWS Hits the Fleet

A handful of beached skiffs does not a difficult target make. Navy helo crews have already disabled small numbers of pirate boats while underway with CSW. The problem comes when those numbers start climbing past about a dozen or so, and they are moving fast, and they are close already. Great...

    APKWS Hits the Fleet

I realize that its actual effective range is less than what everyone likes to believe. However its still more than the -197. Also comparing damage profiles, I'll take the round that actually puts a hole in the boat. Oh by the way, we're already starting in the WEZ so I would argue that's a...

    APKWS Hits the Fleet

Certainly not a PGM that requires me to maintain laser on a small, fast moving target. How about something with the range and punch to sink as many in as little time as possible. Ie enough rounds, good damage, long enough range to kill more than 1 boat per attack run. How about combining it...

    APKWS Hits the Fleet

Again, an area where we are currently AFU and will continue to be so. M-197 is not the weapon for the Navy's intended use. Oh and by the way it has more drawbacks than the other options. ie M-230, .50's. Less punch, less accuracy, fewer rounds carried, not internally reloadable. (Plus other...

Do you use an iPad in the cockpit? Would you?

If nothing else, then get the pubs on CD on the boat. We would save a shit-ton of money, waste and asspain by moving to these. I'm trying to look up the IFC right now as I would love to use an iPad in flight (officially of course). Throw out a contract request, or just a polite question to...

Schedule your "express" shipment early. As in 3-4 weeks before your HHG packup if able. I tried to schedule it...

The Great, Constantly Changing Picture Gallery...part DEUX

Depends on the service. As has been said, there are several Army types still flying after mishaps. The Navy it's hit or miss. Seems to depend on the circumstances, publicity, and loss of life. The Air Force seems to be more generous with allowing guys to keep flying post mishap. Including...

I've been trying to find a copy of an old memo on leadership that seems a bit appropriate now. It was written by the CNO just a few years prior to WWII. Short Version: In it he admonishes the admirals and higher level leaders to stop micromanaging and let individual CO's and under make the...

    Imminient Danger Pay Now Pro-Rated

When I was on the small boy we made nice with the mess guys and always had food available after we landed. Of course I probably ate more meals in the enlisted mess than in the wardroom due to meal hours, quality of food, etc. Luckily on the CV you always have food available.

    Imminient Danger Pay Now Pro-Rated

Funny, I didn't think tax free actually cost the military anything. (Just big government) Its a nice little incentive to be able to give your guys and means a lot to someone, especially for a re-enlistment bonus. Of course there's a good argument to be made for just making all military pay...

    AIRLANT visit Q&A

Having experienced almost every emergency in the book at this point, I'm a big fan of the common sense approach. The great Helo debate

20-40% and 60-75% for Np harmonics 60-90 used to be a gouge number for the head, but I haven't seen it written down anywhere. Also due to accel limiting and auto-start you can actually move the PCL's directly to fly during the start instead of idle, and the engine will still start up just fine...

    The great Helo debate

"Superhawk" means most of the document is common, along with the associated EP's that apply to common systems. (Which caused some angst because for example the HSL guys handle EP's differently than HS so even something like a Stab failure procedure/restrictions becomes an arguing point) The...

    The great Helo debate

This is where in part I think Superhawk is fail. Now instead of only having to argue with the Otto's in your own community, you have to deal with/talk sense into the Otto's from the other -60 communities as well. Its a lot harder to end up with common sense procedures that way because as we...

Naval Aviation Vision - as January 2012

Yes the MH-60S is supposed to get JAGM, or whatever that abortion of a project ends up giving us. (Rockets, laser rockets, laser missiles, etc. Again a program that can't seem to grasp the real needs of the end user.) It is also getting a forward firing 20mm.
  42. lowflier03

    The great Helo debate

Low inertia head has nothing to do with surviving tree strikes. The engines will keep Nr where it needs to be. Plenty of 60's have hit them and kept flying minus a foot or so of blade. What usually happens to make it really bad is hitting something solid enough to completely shatter the...

    The TH-57 Perpetual Motion Machine

Dont even get me started on that stuff. We still have procedures that are left over from the H-3 and were written based on limitations in its systems that we do not have...yet no one wants to step up and say "hey this is stupid, we should take it out."
  44. lowflier03

    The TH-57 Perpetual Motion Machine

I always thought the time delay was the time it takes the B/U pump to spin up enough pressure to pressurize the system via the shuttle valve. (Not for the electrical system to actually swap anything over.) My understanding of the system (in navy birds at least) is that the transfer module...

    The TH-57 Perpetual Motion Machine

Lifting the collective makes sense and does help. Im pretty sure this is why NATOPS used to say the 1" thing. It keeps the blades up/lighter at lower Nr, and helps lower the Nr more, thus facilitating the droops coming in without banging against the spindle stop.
