Some do it before your package it submitted, but it's only required for the Final Select. And you'll do another before you go to OCS, usually. Good luck.

Anyone read this article? "The Reality of OCS"

But in awesome AirWarriors fashion, we've realized the original thought was worthless, threadjacked it, and turned it into a discussion about OCS bowel movements! Myself, and many of my classmates, only managed to crap once or twice during Indoc week. It's come up as a conversation point a few...

Anyone read this article? "The Reality of OCS"

His writing is just a bunch of random bullet points. So strike one for lack of a cohesive thought. Strike two is that most of his stuff is outdated. Strike three is that it sounds like he was a DOR. As a matter of fact, he sounds like one of the whiny bitches who could never pass RLP and...

Really stupid questions about life as a SWO and anything else not aviation related [mod dog wuz hərə]

There's usually a list of ships available and then selections are based on order of merit. For OCSers, this is academic standing in your class. Can't speak to ROTC/Academy rankings. So, you can pick based on what's available when it's your time to pick. The list for my class had...

    Officer Interview

Second vote for Summer Dress Whites. Think of it as a job interview. You wouldn't go to that in Service Uniform, which is roughly equivalent of business casual. I would also suggest going to work in the service uniform and changing into whites before the interview. That way there's less of a...

    Pro-Rec'd then Non-Selected.

It sounds like they're turning multiple dials to get the numbers back where they should. OCS accessions (non-BDCP) are, as explained to me, an easy spout to turn on and off as needed. That's what they're doing here with some Pro-Recs. It sucks, and I feel for these guys. A year ago it...

Apply for what you want, not what you think might look good to the boards. I only put SNA on my packet and got picked up. It doesn't make you look "more like a team player" if you put NFO as your 2nd choice. See the bazillion threads on here from dudes who wanted to be pilots, but put NFO as...

    ASTB Score Significance?

Uh, I think you're missing some sarcasm in his post. For Marine applicants, there is different emphasis on certain things vice Navy applicants. For Marines, PFT is weighted more heavily, while ASTB is pass/fail. Navy is opposite, PFT is pass/fail and higher ASTB seems to weight better for...

    Which watch?

I almost bought a Breitling Emergency in here in PCola a few weeks ago. I decided I wanted one that was customized later ala the ones Citation3 has. Hopefully that works out.
  20. SynixMan

    Pro-Rec'd then Non-Selected.

Here's the deal. YG10 (read: anyone commissioned in Fiscal Year 2010, which probably would've been you) is overmanned for Aviation. BUPERS f'ed up. OCS Accessions are an easy on/off valve for them to slow down the number of people coming into the pipeline. So, rather than arbitrarily cut...

    Post-MEPS injury

You gotta be upfront with your OR. Most likely your MEPS physical already on the books is good to get your Final Select, so you won't have to go back to MEPS again. You'll have between now and OCS to get yourself healed up. FYI, I was accepted in the May Boards and didn't go to OCS until the...

    vision test and ocs

The short answer is any time. Ask the dudes who went in for a cough and went med down for 6 months or booted completely. In reality, for OCS people, you see a flight surgeon at OCS during your physical. If you have any outstanding medical stuff there, they will let you know. We had one guy...

    vision test and ocs

You only get BCGs at OCS if you're farsighted and need them to do daily tasks. A 20/40 nearsighted problem will not get you BCGs at OCS. Or if you do, maybe you don't wear them. Who will know?

What can new SWO officers expect after completing OCS?

My understanding is that everyone does go to SWOS, however you may do it before or after checking into your ship, depending on available class slots and other circumstances out of your control. I'd say half the SWO-daddys from my OCS class went right over to SWOS and the other half went to...

No loan repayment program, however your active duty status allows you to take advantage of SCRA, defer any federal loans at 0% interest, and you'll be getting E-5 pay so you can use that to pay your loans back.

I'm no a FO, so I can't espouse the virtues of that career path. I can, however, tell you to make sure it's something you want to do before you go to OCS. There *will* be times you are pushed to your breaking point, mentally or physically. If it isn't something you want bad, it's going to go...

Wild commissioning question from too much coffee, and no sleep...

It's weird to hear the opposite side of the spectrum. Most of the pilots in my OCS class are 25+, one almost missed the age cutoff if she would've rolled, and we all feel a bit long in the tooth here. It's feels "different" to be older, but less ranked, than your instructors.
