I'll only add that the food on the carrier during deployment was fucking atrocious last year. Whatever NAVSUP is doing to save money should be outlawed. Their "21 day menu" or whatever can kiss my ass.
While it might not be " Newport cold", it does get pretty cold here in the winters (lows in the 20s-30s consistently). I'd hate to be on a boat/camper during those months using a portable electric heater and 4 blankets.
I cannot explain in english words how terrible an idea it is to live on the boat. Don't fucking do it. No amount of money is worth your sanity and soul.
I'd recommend getting a place out in town. Plenty of HSC/VAW/VRC/SWO JOs have a room for rent and would be glad to have the extra cash from...
What? Since when? I did max GW or deck runs regularly up the angle or off spot 2.
Landings, sure, not every day, but when is landing a helo running useful except if you've dumped an engine?
Is there any releaseable numbers on unrefueled Osprey Range? Like from an actual Osprey guy? I feel like numbers throw haphazardly around in a hit piece article are suspect. Also, SOP ranges for shore-ship limits might come into play similar to helos....?
Regardless, I think the VRC guys will...
I'd agree with Fester. Probably, to start, mostly existing VRC guys who get a helo topoff and then go to Cherry Point/New River for a Cat-Other syllabus. Maybe a few Super JOs from a rotary background.
New dudes would follow the USMC route.
Sorry man, couldn't disagree more with you and that article. You cannot argue cost against a thing that doesn't exist. The "COD replacement" doesn't exsist. It's a SLEP'ed wing and a prayer NAVAIR drops big bucks. Ask the -53 community what extending beyond service life indefinitely gets you...
Serious question, why wouldn't you want to fly the Plopter COD? Also the C-2 will still be around for a while. People will still be selecting it till 2020.
Pressurizing the cabin to get "above" weather might be an interesting problem, given the fold mechanism. I don't know what kind of de-ice/anti-ice equipment the V-22 has, but not being able to climb through/above an icing layer might be a change of business for VRC folks. Is it too soon to...
This topic has come up before (re: carrying an engine to the boat), and I know you've done your share of Vertrep. We already manage engines to LHDs for Harriers without the benefit of COD assistance, so it's a (slightly) straw man argument. This would be more of the same. A Sierra from a USNS...
I don't think that's adding to what's largely been a productive discussion.
EDIT: I'll add that I think it's derisive. If anything, the brown shoe wearing Navy is becoming increasingly fragmented, parochial, and silly in their attempts to justify both their existence and part of the ever...
Therein lies the rub. There's what, three helo bubbas with a Star? If our brown shoe leadership is all TACAIR folks, because they get the billets that get a star (CVN CO/CAG), did they care if two ancillary (in their mind) reserve helo squadrons went away. If our leadership is single minded in...
Fester, you're witnessing career conservatism at its best, as I'm sure you know. Just like the Air Force a few years ago, we have no idea if it's a "thing" or merely a passing fad of the current conflict. Creating a career path around it is dangerous, so we divert guys.
Last I saw, HUQ-1 is...
So you worked for some shitty bosses over the years? That's it? Or is it folks who aren't VF/VFA who suck? And your solution is to further decrease the available population of folks that could possibly be a CAG? That's the same myopic self-selection that got you the shitty bosses you hated...
I have to imagine the CCX requirement comes from a need to prove you did more than beat up the pattern instructing in a Robbie for your first 1k hours, then did Grand Canyon tours for the next 1k. However, the resume reader is the ultimate authority, unless CAMTS provides further guidance...

I read a lot on there and there's some good discussions. The military forum is (sadly) basically all talk about getting picked up for army aviation (tests, applications, etc). Wish they'd split that off and we could have more productive discussions...
Good inputs Swanee. Ill also add that the Army has Predators, but my understanding of their doctirinal use is they go with specific units, not indepdent units.
Oh, and then there's this gem:

Thought this was relevant to the group. Interesting that the equivalent of a USFF memo to the CNO made it into the presses. For all we talk about "Someone eventually has to say...
As an LT who still has 50k in student loans, I'd highly suggest you get the NROTC scholarship if you can. There's no loan repayment program for Officers. If you're rich or go to a cheap school, well, then, do BDCP...
What wlawr005 speaks of is still pretty real in Helo land. There's a definitive tension between AWs and Maintainers when it comes to rankings or awards. And he is right, that some folks don't take shit seriously. All that being said, good leadership, at the Front Office, JO, and Maintenance...
^^ And don't wait until the week of your API Christmas (aka flight gear issue) to buy Ensign bars. The PCola uniform shop was regularly sold out of ENS and JG bars. Same/same for the Whiting NEX, especially around May. Surprise surprise!
This thread is blowing my mind. I guess I figured all AF units (AD, Reserve, and Guard) all still had a working bar in their squadrons. Whoops.
As others have said, the fun is the Navy commands I've been at is separated into E-6 and below, Chiefs (E-7-E-9), and Officer pools. Everyone...
Super sad that Sony went this far in response to a terror threat. There's probably some insurance/liability things here at play we might not fully grasp (and might not be fully public), but the internet and cybersecurity (or lack thereof) has leveled the playing field in some respects. While...
I flew around the CSG with an iPhone 5 in my pocket most of deployment. Never had an issue with it. Not sayin it would've survived a direct blast from the SPY-1 or being on top of the APX for hours, but it held up well. Can't rememeber off th top of my head which big antennas were on top of...
StuCon and the Front Office are your advocates at this point. They are most likely in contact with the Detailer on your behalf, but you're also driving your career at this point. You aren't the first person that's NPQ at the FRS. Things to consider:
-Do you still owe time from a...
I wear foamies plus the HGU-84 (Navy Standard Rotary Helmet). 700 hours later and I think my hearing is pretty much intact. Largest noise up front in the -60S, to be honest, is the stupid fucking RPS Avionics fan they added in the Block 3A. Thanks Uncle Igor and Co for designing the worlds...
Totally ebbs and flows. Sometimes the Navy needs people in other places (SWO/intel/etc), sometimes it doesn't and you get shown the door (complete with a free college education). Having a good attitude helps a lot. if you want to stay in.
That being said, it's tough to get straight up kicked...
So, 9 months waiting for Tipsy Gypsy patches, plus a 9month deployment to 5th Fleet, and I ended up taking my jacket into Biker's Depot in Virginia Beach. They put the squadron patch on, plus added the side pockets with lining, just in time for temps to dip into the 40s around here. Highly...
Never used them, but:

Heard good things about Oxford, but no idea what's up with their site.
ZOMBIE THREAD RESSURECTION!
So seriously, is this still a thing? The wife and I are considering using this. Stationed in VA, but we're both FL residents.
I have no doubt you know far better than I the -120 side of the house. It always seemed like a monstrous squadron with all the FO training plus pilot stuff. That being said, sending everyone to New River might be a tough sell. I'd imagine a sim or two in Norfolk for them and one on the west...
Fester is hitting the nail on the head. I imagine the VRC folks aren't too hot on losing their admin in Reno every year, but the CODsprey makes sense on so many fronts. Bell has already talked about changes to give the -22 longer legs to fit the requirement. It's a mature design that's...
There's no world I can see where they don't buy a variant of the Plopter. Don't worry COD guys, we'll let you have our rotary patches without an online forum debate.
My understanding is there's a DEERS lookup for companies to verify you are actually in the military. To Teejc88, you can get it now, pay the $450 initially, and probably get reimbursed after you commission, but that's a bit of risk on your part.
