F-22 Utilized in First Combat Mission

Sometimes there is more to fight than just enemy troops on the ground.

    Joining the navy!

Hey man.... it's not all lattes and five star hotels in the AF... sometimes we stay in four star hotels... and sometimes they don't have those flavored creamers for your coffee. ;)

    Joining the navy!

Indeed, Indeed;) In all honesty, each service is challenging and hard in its own unique way. It's a privilege to fly in either. I work 12 hours days almost everyday and then have to come into work a portion of Sunday to study. Anytime you're not flying, you're studying tactics in the vault.

    Joining the navy!

Joslyn, here are a few things that may help you in your quest: 1) External factors (such as Hurricane Sandy) happen to everyone, it's what you choose to do in spite of it that will determine you future. I was running close to the age timeline due to several reasons prior to finishing my...

Active Modern Military Aircraft Question...Need Input

Mainly just during FCFs. There are certain configurations / conditions where the CFTs do not gain any extra endurance because of the drag index, similar to the centerline tank. Even with the CFTs, the APG-70 is good air to air... now with the APG-82, quite a bit better. The bottom line is that...

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

You can get fighters in either service. The chances could be higher if you pick up an ENJJPT slot with the AF, since you track T-38s... but there's no guarantees and quite a few dudes from Sheppard have ended up with C-130s or something. If by chance you go the WSO route, about 3-4 people out of...

Active Modern Military Aircraft Question...Need Input

I don't understand it. We carry the AIM-120, AIM-9, do DCA, etc. Also, if you take the CFTs off a -229 jet it's much superior to the C model in a BFM environment.

The ALCA is fairly capable and not really a trainer

Active Modern Military Aircraft Question...Need Input

I can't think of anyone who still flies the F-104 in a military capacity (only few civilian owned ones flying out there). IIRC, Italy retired them in the mid 2000's.

Summary of NFO Advanced (UMFO) [VMTS SEP2014]

Cool to see what the Navy does. There is a pretty stark contrast from the AF CSO to WSO side. There really isn't anything too related to F-15E stuff until IFF (introduction to fighter fundamentals) after winging. In the AF undergraduate program, there are a few sims on stern conversions, but...

    F-15C Crash in Western VA

Just the seat kit stateside. We don't have anything in the harness besides the lowering device, etc. Pilot was confirmed deceased by the MA ANG... we just fought those guys... huge bummer.

Make Money Flying Civilian on Weekends

That's actually fairly common amongst the Guard. They're usually hired based on having a job/career that meshes well with the part time ANG life-style. In the AF, it's not uncommon for Pilots/WSOs to have a CFI and do part time instructing - not so much for a side revenue, but because they enjoy...

    I screwed up....am I screwed?

Don't sweat it man. I forgot to add the fourth thing(s)... never give up, never count yourself out, and don't suck. There are some pretty crazy stories of dudes with unbelievable odds fulfilling a dream to serve by flying pointy nose jets. I'm sure you can press and do great things.

    I screwed up....am I screwed?

First off dude... Having a girlfriend didn't make you lose focus, you lost focus. Personal responsibility will be the key to your future success. Secondly, no one cares about what happened to you... they will care about what you did about it and the results you produced. Thirdly, now is a good...

    O-1 Budget in Flight School

My humble opinion is that while an O-1, 0-2, O-3, the normal TSP is not that great. The Roth TSP (if TSP is your thing) is a better option... particularly from lower income to combat pay etc. I'm personally not a fan of the TSP in general because of the limited options. It's really designed for...

Afterburner Seminars trademarking wearing of Flightsuits

Is this specifically a trademark against other people in the same type of business wearing a flight suit? I'm not sure the countless contractor and civilian air show pilots are going find a new type of nomex attire.

    FS: 2008 Porsche Cayman S ... the perfect O1-Mobile

I was looking at 997 Carreras, beautiful cars, but my chipped E92 335i will easily out-perform it. Heresy, I know... not being a "true" sports car, but it is user friendly to work on and still fun to drive. It'll hold me a couple of years until a reasonable milage, used, 997 Turbo becomes more...

    Summary of NFO flight school

I feel like I lost a little bit of "air sense" during the program than I started with in civilian flying... but that's entirely subjective and probably varies from person to person. One thing to note is that the program brings a lot of diversity in instructors. You may learn how to navigate the...

    Summary of NFO flight school

Glad you asked Huggy and cfam... It's exactly as described. We went thought IFS out in Pueblo and Water survival prior to starting in Pensacola. We were the second class to graduate under the "new syllabus" with the aft station working in the T-1. The T-6 syllabus has changed since I went...

ASIANA Boeing 777 crash landing KSFO

There is some talk around of something with the 777 auto-throttles, known as the "FLCH trap"... here is an article about it: http://www.flyingmag.com/blogs/going-direct/asiana-214-crash-lessons-learned

Can you apply for Air Force and Navy OCS at the same time?

If you get selected by the Navy first, I'd probably go that route... especially if you don't have any age issues. Each service sorta has it's good and bars... many of us in the AF wish we were doing the Navy program across the street. However, we don't fly on weekends (unless an XC) and it only...

USAF cuts powerlines with an A-10

Tim Bennett's story is actually pretty cool. The reason he didn't take the Mi-24 with a heater is because at his speed the GBU-10 had a longer range, the Hind was moving at about 100 knots and climbing.. not ideal for keeping it lased (not to mention they were getting a lot of AAA)... but hey, I...

How much does prior flight training help?

What you've been advocating... "flexibility and adapting" is easier said than done - it will no doubt be hard for you in particular, no matter what you say. Trust me. Good Realtors in Pensacola/Perdido?

Feinstein to introduce AWB in January

I guess letting a convicted murderer (who didn't even use a firearm in the original conviction) out after 17 years is ok.... but it's not ok for people to possess guns with a pistol grip, detachable magazines, or (gasp) barrel shrouds? Plus, doesn't NY already have some of the most strict...

    Should I go NFO?

The AF's rule at the moment is 2 years from when you wing as a CSO to go to UPT....it has been done earlier in many airframes and ops squadrons. With the potential airline hiring floodgates about to open, it may be very easy in the near future. Lots of spots in recent years....sometimes not too...

Scooters Forever (A-4 Skyhawk Tribute Thread)

Their current flying fleet is bigger than ATACs...having worked for and flown with them, I can tell you that they have all their ducks in a row...unlike most aspiring red air companies. I understand the skepticism...many have tried only to be blocked by the FAA or State Dept.

Scooters Forever (A-4 Skyhawk Tribute Thread)

This is a little different than most previous types. The MiGs do have value, it's not all red-aggressor type stuff. The MB-339s will also play an important role as well in the air to ground arena. They have some very impressive capabilities that previous organizations simply did not have.

May not be a bad idea to apply for both AF and Navy.... the Guard is certainly a good gig as well. I'm AF at a Navy base... can't complain too much at all. Although they do stuff really weird, the Navy dudes around here aren't that bad in real life. I can only imagine that the boards will...

Scooters Forever (A-4 Skyhawk Tribute Thread)

Word on the street was that the 404s in those older, but refurbed, B model airframes had a few structural problems... last I heard that fleet is still in France. Also I think the Israelis had E/F models.. which were redesigned H.. I believe that the 404 would only fit in older J65 style birds...
