    Miraculous Rescue

I also thought so at first but towards the end the guy in the left seat appears to turn around and speak to someone behind him. Hence, R-44. I've been wrong before.... Hmmm, what year was that???

    If One Lives Long Enough....

Tough and resilient indeed. My Mom and step dad hosted several Vietnamese families over a period of time after the fall of the South. I had forgotten about them, (I wasn't around, courtesy of the Navy) and was moved when my after my step dad passed a couple of years ago, several of them showed...

    Finessing a low

I've made that approach many times. Usta rent there but haven't flown out of there for several years. The ground slopes down to the runway, which has a slight incline for the first few hundred feet or so. On short final a car crossing would probably be out of sight under the nose. I was always...

    The Call To Serve

If there was I was never aware of it. My first enlistment was U. S. Army, heavy weapons. Any discrimination was more on a social basis rather than if your serice number started with a US (draftee) or RA (volunteer). I worked under draftee non-coms and later had draftees working for me. When...

    Aviators' experience having dogs/pets

This thread reminds me of when we moved to Pax from Key West. One of the guys had a family dog (Norwegian Buhound) that he couldn't keep so I adopted it. Great dog and we bonded immediately. I was still single and traveled a lot but had a couple close by that wanted to dog-sit him. Things went...

ASW without puke?! Not in my Navy!!

Just an old P3 guy's perception here, but it seemed like when we were "playing" with one of our newer boats we could track them all day. That is, until they got tired of playing and would sometimes just disappear. They could get real quiet real quick. I think our side was better at this...

OK, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that you could probably count that as 13, unless they revived the other half... :) Great pictures, btw, and good work. Looks like the F4 is in burner already. Must be a "Get the eff outta Dodge " type manuever.

Maintainers and handlers; the men and women who keep them flying.

Heh. This old maintainer got a FRONT seat flight in a T-28 once. Of course it helped that the pilot (from the VT IUT unit)was a close friend and neighbor and the VT OpsO was a neighbor on the other side. Also that I had a couple hundred T-34B hours and 1K+ fixed wing hours. Different times, I...

    Coyote down in my orchard

Brings to mind the one I took down with a 25-06 several years ago. He crossed my shooting lane and then made the mistake of crossing back to sniff and pee on a bush. I cut the tail off and took it home. Our Yorkie went totally batshit when I let him sniff it. I was rolling on the garage floor. :D

    50 Years of P-3s

Flew on P-3A BuNo 152169 back in early 70's. We had one P-3A older in the 150XXX range which we used as a project aircraft but my memory fails me on the BuNo.:( An interesting website here with lots of detail, although I found some erroneous dates.

    MH-60S with a M197 20mm cannon!

Looks like it is a way to mount a flash hider without overheating the barrels. I would think the flash from that thing could be a bit distracting to the pilot after dark.

    I've got an itch...

To acquire an evil black rifle in either .223 or 6.8. I understand the argument about ammo availability in .223 vs 6.8, but for what I will be using it for that's not a huge consideration. I probably shoot less than 300 rds a year anymore. I'm wanting something that will work out past 50 yds up...

Why do I suck (with some iron sights)?

At first blush, I would say the aperture size in the rear sight. The larger the rear aperture, the more room for angular displacement. I'm not familiar with any of the sights except the M-1 so it's just a guess on my part. We would teach the plebes the importance of sight alignment by...
