Aromi d'Italia is two doors down and much better for ice cream.
My folks moved to Annapolis when I was 6 years old. Aromi d'Italia, Ben & Jerry's, etc... didn't exist when I was there growing up. I stand by my statement. A TRUE Annapolitan goes to Storm Brothers.

And for a milkshake: Chick and Ruth's.
Can't argue that one. And also Chick & Ruth's for a post-drinking munchie-fest...

WTF is Kilwans?? If you're a true Annapolitan, you get your scoop at Storm Brothers...

Not a true Annaolitian by a long shot. Kilwins (spelled it wrong in earlier post) is just an ice cream place that my friends showed my wife and I. Since then, Mrs. Pags and I usually make a point of stopping there since it's better than anything Pax has. We'll have to try out Storm Brothers or Aromi d'Italia next time we're in Crab Town.

Anyone that thinks/believes that Fowler had any love for football hasn't watched Chet argueing with him till Chet was red in the face, trying to get extended Liberty after a home football win. Fowler had NO impact on anything athletic at USNA. Now Rodney on the other hand, loved athletics and wanted all NAVY athletic teams to do well. Who can forget him in the stands leading cheers for NAVY, (especially after Fowler had relieved him...). !

The reason you don't hear about USMA is that NAVY has WON the Navy/Army Game now EIGHT years in a row.

NAVY football is very successful (within it's mid-level scheduling) for a Service Academy, so the media will grasp any negative pub and run with the 'story'.

How many stories have you read lately about the normal Firstie foul-ups that lead to separation ? Probably none, but as we know it happens every year. I read nothing about the Mid that became pregnant (not by a football player), left, had the baby, returned, and graduated.

Please note that I do not condone violations of rules and regs by anyone, no matter the sport they play, the sex they may be or the color of their skin or how "diverse" they may be, or what path they chose to arrive as Officers in the USN/USMC.

For the record, I did not go to the academy. I did visit the campus recently with my family. After visiting the gift shop with navy displays and seeing this recruiting video I'm curious about something: Does the USNA not want/have white males as students? There, I said it.

I'm going to assume all those favoring Storm Brothers were not living in/near Annapolis when the Annapolis Ice Cream Company opened. It's hands down my favorite and has won the "Best Ice Cream in Annapolis" award since 2005. Next time your in town, go for the homemade peanut butter flavors.

You are correct in your assumption. From 1998-2007 I didn't live in or around Annapolis, but I did live in Annapolis from 1979-1998, and Odenton from 2007-2009. Annapolis Ice Cream Company may be all that and a bag of chips - but I'll still go to Storm Brothers. Why? Because I like it, and it was around when I was a kid.

And as far as scandals go, come on, let's be honest, I'm sure NROTC mids do as much or more stupid crap than Academy mids
I would agree with that, having first hand experience in some of that stupid shit. The difference is (and yes, there is a difference) that folks at the Academy are Mids 24/7. That's the deal you guys signed up for and as such, you will ALWAYS be held to a higher standard until you meet up with your peers from ROTC after graduation. At that point, you'll both be held to the same standard. ROTC folks are Mids one or two days a week and really only for just a few hours. Why the hell do you think those of us that went the ROTC route decided to go that way. It's not because we couldn't get into the Academy.

Agreed. Now riddle me this - why do PLC bubbas (in the Marine Corps) rate MORE pay than an Academy guy at commissioning? Seems a little BS to me.

I know why. It's so you could have the "real" college experience, or so I've been told countless times. Can we please get off that train (not necessarily directed at you)? I loved the college experience I had, and wouldn't trade it for a "real" college experience for a million years. Besides - some of us realized that if it wasn't a service Academy, VMI or the Citadel - we would never have graduated from college (yes, I needed a daily kick in the ass to go to school. I hated all forms of school until I was about 30, still don't like it, but at least realize the importance of it).

You have a point, but that point brought up something I still don't get. If Academy grads truly don't really make any better officers than ROTC types by the time everything shakes out, then why does the Navy spend SO MUCH more per capita on the average USNA alum as compared to an OCS or NROTC type?

I don't think Annapolis needs to go away; Churchill was completely wrong about the validity of Naval tradition. But in comparing my experience with NROTC with the stories of my friends and acquaintances who went to Annapolis, I think that ROTC should become more like the Academy, and the Academy should become more like ROTC. It seems to me, at least from the ROTC grad side of the fence, that you can get a great preparation for commissioning at either place. The difference being that an ROTC mid has to take initiative and grab it, while the Academy mid has it "shoved up his ass one dime at a time," presumably along with the $250,000 education. So one could argue that a mid who goes through Annapolis doing the bare minimum would be better prepared to be an officer than one who went through ROTC doing what was the minimum acceptable standard there. Theoretically, anyway.

So I wouldn't really be too nonplussed if CNET came out tomorrow and said ROTC mids would have to do unit PT 3 days a week, wear their uniforms 2-3 days a week, and take more hard science courses or language/cultural/military history courses to get a commission. And I would also not be nonplussed if the new USNA Supe actually let the kids there have a social life that didn't involve vaulting stone walls or inventing stupid games in Bancroft Hall (Yes, I'm exaggerating, but you get my point).

Oh, and NROTC can give kicks in the ass, too, if the staff is on their game; I recall very well doing a rug-dance in my Freshman Advisor's office (the guy ea6bflyr turned over with, actually :)) after I got a whopping 38 percent on my first-ever college midterm in Calc II. :icon_tong

Agreed.

And I would posit that I think the Academy types would probably benefit the most from it. I mean, you sell kids on the idea of going to a place that will teach them to piss excellence and turn them into defenders of freedom and democracy, then treat them like 12 year olds. At its core, it undermines your training and creates a system that breeds cynicism. Plebe summer/plebe year? Sure. Grind 'em down, give them some humility, but them train them back up.

I agree, but I don't make the rules, my friend.

Nah, it's so I wouldn't have to put up with the bullshit games anymore (at least to that extent). I went in as an enlisted nuke to 1) go to the Academy and 2) become a pilot. I ended up going to BOOST (waste of my time) and graduated in the top 10. I could have easily gone to the Academy after that if I wanted. I was told more than once to just say the word and it would be done. After nuke school and BOOST, I was ready for a lower key educational experience that included the company of attractive women. Now whether you call that a "real" college experience is up to you I guess. For me, I was just happy to be around blue eyed blondes and beer in the same place. :icon_zbee
