There was a point paper floating around about a year ago for the Navy to stand up a few squadrons of Turboprops in Iraq/Afghanistan, for low-cost CAS. It even detailed how pilots could take the assignment as an IA and save the Navy $$.

Wonder what ever happened to it. . .

I have heard that SOCOM is looking at the option, along with a few other aircraft, but never heard anything about the Navy doing it though.

Well, you see, that's the point. The E-2 didn't do DASC(A) until after the opening days of OIF 1, and the guys were seriously underemployed and looking for a mission. It's something we've been learning to do since, but we're getting pretty adept at it.

Does the Corps consider only a Marine capable of being the AMC? Not a sarcastic question, I'm really curious. Because E-2 folks aren't just procedural controllers, and you don't need a qualified JTAC to hand assets off to a JTAC. That being said, it's not like we have a jumpseat for an extra body. But take up your radio and tell us where you need bombs...we'll make sure you get 'em. :D
Sorry, just re-read the thread and realized that I didn't answer the question.

AMC is not a JTAC/FAC job, it's a flight leadership position. He's the Air Mission Commander, and he's thinking about a bigger picture than just procedural control/positive control of assets and hand offs to FACs. He's working closely with the MC (Mission Commander, a grunt) to ensure that all the aviation players CAS/Assault Support and the like are in place and ready to ensure success for the MC. Timelines, execution checklists, etc are his concern. Unless it's a super joint mission, I'd expect it would only be a Marine. I'd suspect the E-2 would be a perfect platform for an AMC, provided that you can give up at least two of your radios for his use. That's why the UYQ-3 was so good - we had our own radios, and a crap ton of on station time.

When I first started coordinating for it, we called over to the C-130 squadron and asked if they had UYQ-3's in country. When they told us yes, we asked about DASC(A)/AMC platform - since they were going to be in a tanker track close to the objective for the whole mission. No problem they said. A couple of days later they called and said "Umm, yeah. We were opchecking the UYQ's and realized they don't plug into our aircraft." YGTBSM! You hauled those fuckers across the world, only to find out they don't plug in?!? I have seen a P-3 used as an AMC platform before, and like I said - you could use an E-2, but realistically it would probably have to be dedicated to the mission.
