Hello all, I am shipping out to Navy OCS in a few weeks but won't actually take the PFT until a month from now due to the ROM. Recently, I have been experiencing knee problems on my right knee, I am an avid runner and run just about every other day and have been doing so since high school. The pain that I am having is ITBS, at least what a friend told me who is a PT practitioner. This type of pain has been on and off over the past few years but I am pretty stressed out now because OCS is coming close. The pain recently came out this past week when I was running. I have taken a break from running but am worried this may not heal in time for OCS. It's not a terrible pain, I can still walk and go up stairs fine but its there. I can run the 1.5 miles in about 10:50, the PFT I am not worried about but it is more about the events after. I am worried that my knee will get worse with all the PT and stress endured at OCS. I would hate to be sent to Med Hold at OCS or even worse, DQD. That being said, what should I do? Should I still go to OCS? I have always wanted to be a Naval Officer and am worried that this may screw up everything. Should I tell my recruiter? Is there anyone else that went to OCS with a similar problem and made it through? Thank you, all advice is appreciated.

Depending on your age, you're gonna want to be able to run it faster than 10:50. I was 39 at OCS running a 9:40 trying not to attract the attention of the DI's during group runs. Go see a doc and get it taken care of before you show up. You don't want to end up in H-company for something you could have fixed sooner. Good luck!

This is bad gouge. Candidates definitely want to be in as best shape as possible, but as long as a candidate can pass the in-PFA, they will be fine.
That's why I said depending on his age. Is 10:50 passing for a 23 year old? Spekkio is right though, go there injured you'll be fine.

Spekkio

He bowls overhand.

I never said to go injured. 10:50 exceeds the minimum standard for 20-24 y.o. males by 2:45.

If you can endure the pain and make decent times while not standing out... then that is your decision point. So if you can hack and love running like you say, you’re going to have some aches and pains anyway as you experience the regime. I used to have to take Advil prior to running once I was in my forties and had a lot of miles on my knees. I knew what was coming and just had to stay mentally on top of it. A wise SEAL told me once that you need to discern whether the pain you feel is actually an injury or not and manage accordingly. Check out what folks in BUD/S say about aches and pains. Part of the experience is Mind over Muscle....

I would suck it up but that's just me

Says the guy who, according to his signature line, hasn't been to any type of OCS.

Showing up to Marine OCS with any type of injury is not a good idea- it breaks healthy people, and there is no medical hold. If you get hurt and can't continue to train/miss an event, you get dropped.

But I'd defer to someone who has actually been to Navy OCS.
