Was that info public when the flight took off? I haven't looked closely at the timelines, but it's possible that was not widely known.
The timeline wasn't exactly tight but I think it was a bit extenuating. The missile strikes were just past 1am and the shootdown, I mean airliner crash was just past 6am. So if you or I are one of the people on that plane, you're at the Tehran Airport at 5:30 in the morning to get on your flight to Ukraine (your mind is on being on time and getting through airport security, customs, etc.) yes international tensions are high but could you still miss the breaking news that happened overnight? Maybe. Is the national news in your face there, like the way U.S. airports have news stands everywhere and CNN constantly playing on televisions? I'm sure the news of the strikes was freely available to the passengers but I can also see how it could be just as easy to miss.

Passengers in U.S. airports get pretty task saturated just reading the overhead signs to find their gates, not a lot of leftover situational awareness. Just saying.

Not to mention a lot of them would want to stick to their itinerary because of their personal plans, visas (whether or not it's easy to extend the visit), or whatever other reasons. Hindsight is everything I guess.

Brett / Jim, you both bring up good points.
I'm assuming the "traveling public" in the US is more savvy than they are in the Middle East... but that isn't saying much based on what I see on a daily basis in US airports.

The traveling public loses 20-30 IQ points when the step into a commercial airport.

And let’s keep in mind the amount of IQ points the traveling public has to begin with. ?‍♂️

Yeah, what dumbasses...They obviously didn't google the Iranian IAD system before boarding their flight out of Tehran. They should have known there would be mobile SA-15's on hair triggers outside the international airport. Maybe they did, and figured the route direct to Kiev wouldn't be misconstrued as a threat.

UAL obviously needs to explain their decision to not cancel the flight, but ultimately Iran's fuck-up.

Why would ATC have detailed knowledge of outgoing strikes that happened hundreds of miles away, or SA about the alert posture of the Iranian IADS? Presumably they keep a tight lid on that.

Hands off Ukraine! Feet too
They must have mistaken it for the P-8’s taking off from Tehran

Happy-triggered Pers could forget SA-15 in fully auto mode. But I doubt this missile, 9M330, would allow the 737 to fly some time after the hit. I participated in launches of the old version of this SAM, 9M33 of Osa (Wasp) AAW system and I can say that it broke the target drone (of MiG-21 size) in half. Aside, the engine hit says rather in favor of shoulder launcher like Stinger or Igla.

I've already seen the ELINT and OPIR data on this engagement, which was referenced in USG statements today. I wholeheartedly disagree with your lay assessment. You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. This should further serve to illustrate the Max is not some cheeky, unaffiliated Ukrainian, but fully invested in spreading the clumsy, incompetent Russian party line and disinformation campaign that is aligned with the Iran and Syrian regimes. I'm sure he would deny the Russian culpability in the MH17 shootdown as well.
