FY 20 IWC DCO Board

I received a call today and I was 1 of 6 selected for 1825.

My background is complicated and a unicorn. Long time DoD civilian with some once in a lifetime opportunities that are the only reason I was competitive. I’m exceptionally excited.

Off topic - Nice profile pic. I thought I was the only person (outside of Europe) to know about that band.

Yes.

No way in hell I would join the Army as anything less than an 18X candidate. You think the Navy is backwards in some ways...

Off-topic question, but in that case, are you saying Army is "harder" to get into than Navy or Air Force on the basis that you personally would only consider Special Forces? It's not fair to compare a small intense group within the Army to the entire Air Force and Navy.

If you want to get into the Army, it's not tough, on top of which it helps a lot they catastrophically missed their recruitment quotas for FY19. Their new fitness test isn't helping matters, either. If someone wants to go Army and they can do a light deadlift, there's a spot ready and waiting for them.

My comment is that I would only join the Army as an 18X because I've worked with regular Army and SF and I much prefer SF folks over conventional Army folks.

Hey all, I'm a long time lurker and first time poster. Just wanted to thank everyone for their help with providing general information on the DCO process for the Navy Reserve. This website has been a great resource for applicants like me and I appreciate the information. I recently applied to the Sept 2019 board for 1835, and just found out that I was selected. I'll post my background below. I hope to post on here more in the future since I'll actually have some background and knowledge to share on the process.

Background:
29 M
Degrees- B.A. from VMI (International Studies and Political Science), M.S. from University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) (Intelligence Management), Doctor of Philosophy in Public Policy (focus in National Security Policy) from Liberty University (currently attending)
Experience- 5.5 years as a consultant working for a Defense Contractor. Experience supporting various government, national security, and military clients.
No prior military experience.

Note: I submitted a package once before this board (back in March 2019) and wasn't selected.

Funny enough, it's the leg tuck that most people are failing, particularly females. Sad thing is, administrative roles only need to get 1, combat support need 3, and combat roles need 5

If we had our PFA monitored and quality control'd like the Army's, people would be failing left and right. After this last PFA a couple of weeks ago, I am left in disbelief.

No way in hell would I be a CFL.

I learned about the DCO option after graduating in May and just submitted my last piece of paperwork to (still waiting for confirmation) do the panel interview this upcoming drill weekend. This website/forum has been a godsend for information and gouge so thank you all!

I am unsure if I even stand a chance after scouring the program authorizations because I don't have a large civilian leadership profile and I don't have certs due to being a developer.

I am applying for 1815 Cryptologic Warfare and 1825 Information Professional and my stats include:
  • Current Active Clearance
  • LORs: O-6 Unit COs; O-6 Unit Senior Officer; O-6 Unit Senior Officer; O-8 First CO
  • Last 3 Evals: 1 MP, 2 EP
  • 11.5 Years Active Duty Navy - Electronics Technician Radio Communications - Submarines
    • Qualified every watch/school related to my rating many of which is communications and EW related.
    • Two Submarine tours - One deployment
    • Instructor tour - Qualified Instructor
    • One IA deployment to Iraq
  • 3.5 Years Active Reserves Navy - Electronics Technician Radio Communications - Submarines
    • Unit LPO
    • FCPOA Member
  • Bachelors of Science - Computer Science with 3.78GPA
  • 7 Years experience in web/software development
    • Freelancing for 7 years doing local small business type website work
    • 3.5 Years as a DoD contractor working on various projects one of which I was the lead for creating/developing a Navy Program Office IWS 5 analytical tool for the fleets sonar stack supplies.
    • 0.5 Years working for Linux Academy as a developer to break out of the DoD sphere and gain experience not obtained in the DoD contracting world. They have me in a training pipeline for getting all the cloud based certs (AWS, Google, Azure, etc.) due to the fact we teach them.
  • Currently a founding/lead developer for an open source application
  • Various Volunteering Items
  • Eagle Scout
Thanks everyone and appreciate the tips!

IP (1825) might be a little more in your wheelhouse as a Comp Sci guy, but 1815 could use your talents as well. I also highly recommend pursuing a graduate program.

I had 6 years active as an Aegis FC, 3 years Reserve as an FC, and was finishing my MSEE when I got picked up for 1815. YMMV

Connecticut offers free tuition for veterans so was seriously considering it.

Results were sent to the NRD's 20 September 2019. Everyone should have been notified.

Professionally Recommended
3 x OCEANO
6 x CW
6 x IP
50 x INTEL

For those professionally recommended, 14 had hard science degrees (21%), 7 had AI/ML (11%). Out of the 122 total packages, 25% had either a hard science degree or experience in AI/ML.

3 of the 6 IP's were brought in as O2's. I take back what I said about it never happening :)

The next board is in March 2020.
