IP Basic and PCS

Has anyone attended the IP Basic course from out of the area and navigated lodging reimbursement?.

Since the course is considered PCS and I am choosing to not move my family to VA Beach. I am being told I may have to pay out of pocket for my own lodging. Doing quick math that's about an $18k hit.

Anyone else navigate this process? I can't be the first one

Um... ask your IP colleagues in your command and/or the school house?

Who is telling you that the course is PCS? Where are you reading this? What type of orders will you be on? ADT? ADSW?

I was able to get it resolved - the short version of the story is that anything over 139 days is a PCS and the business rules are written assuming you would PCS your household to your new location so lodging appropriations in the funding lines are not included out the gate as you would not need them since your assumed to be moving.

It sounds like you got it figured out but I’d recommend getting real familiar with the JTR.

For future reference if you’re trying to do something and ‘business rules’ aren’t allowing you to, but the JTR says it’s ok, the JTR takes precedence.

Business rules conflicting with the JTR is technically not supposed to happen but it does.

Unfortunately this course length (~142 days) really screws reservists - we're told it's a PCS, yet we don't get the benefits of things like househunting leave and other lead times and assistance active duty members get to properly move.

IP Basic was not required for me as a LCDR lateral transfer, but I asked to attend anyway and initially got a quota. If I had attended, I would have had to PCS from Manhattan to VA Beach, and then return to Manhattan in peak summer season and find a new apartment, not a trivial or cheap task.

We tried to work around the system by making my orders 138 days and having me attend the last week on drill reskeds, but that was promptly shot down by RESFOR. It's silly that they can't shave a week off this course and make this easier on reservists.

There is talk of modularising this course in the future for the reserve community, which I believe Intel has done with their schoolhouse.

The personnel at IWTCVB are incredible with this, too. If you ever have questions or concerns while you are here, especially regarding travel claims and per diem and all that, they are a godsend in there and they tell us that they process IP stuff first.

I'm in a similar situation where my family won't move down until later so I need to find housing for at least a few months. I'm sure I am not the only who has had this situation, what do others typically do for housing? I was told barracks aren't available and to apply for BAH at my dependent's location and split it between the two. Any recommendations on where to stay?

The saga continues. Bottom line is if you are an IP and want to maintain your current residence, you will have to pay out of pocket for lodging. Those looking to go to IPBC better do a lot of pre-planning.

I am going to stand up a milsuite for reservists to coordinate on these things

I’m active duty but am currently selling my house and will be down in VB for at least a month having to pay two rents. Anyone need a roommate for a rent under $600 a month? Also, are we allowed to get second jobs while down there, that would help out a lot.

Wow. Not that is something the recruiters are definitely not telling Reserve DCO candidates. I will start mentioning this during my DCO interviews to make sure people are well aware.

Recruiters are not going to well-versed on the inner workings of the various school pipelines. They can get you gouge on OCS/ODS. It’s up to the community beyond that point.

Actually no. It's up to the recruiter to educate candidates on everything that is expected of them. They educate candidates on school requirements (Page 13) and on mobilization expectations, etc. This is no different. Some people may not want to join because of having to PCS for a school.
