Crossing the finish line... running, walking or crawling... (Reserve Retirement Process)

Over the goal line, completely through the endzone and headed out the tunnel with 31 good years. A recent email from PERS noted high year tenure and subsequent transfer to the Retired Reserves. Every time I wanted to stop, thought about the RCSBP and kept going to protect my family. (For those new to the reserves, the Reserve Component Survivor Benefit Plan - RCSBP - guarantees your family will get 55% of your retirement if you pass.)

Thanks to VCX, Sam I am and the rest for keeping all updated every time the Navy Reserves changed requirements.

Pers 912 is well behind in processing retirement paperwork. My package has been sitting there for 8 months. Still have not processed it yet. I recommend getting the package in 12 months prior, not 6-8 as they say.

Great...I was told by PERS-912 not to apply until my anniversary month. On another note, I've been trying to submit my final class for the last month. Their fax number keeps sending back error messages. So tired of the run around. I called them today, and it's no longer IRR Counselor, it's some my Navy Portal or something. It's just an all around disaster.

Yeah, last time I called it was some Lockheed contractor FOR PERs that answered. It’s like another layer of insulation since the contractor didn’t actually seem to know anything and referred to a...person(??? Or sheet??) to answer my questions.

Good luck and be persistent!

Well...got some movement in the last 24 hours. I figured out that the fax machine problem was my machine, not the Navy's. AND...I received my letter stating that if I submit enough points for a good year by 20 December 2019, I'm eligible for transfer to the retired reserves and my retirement date would be 01 May 2020. So I got that going for me...which is nice.

Well done buddy—and holy cow, 31 years!!!

Thanks. It seems like yesterday when I was at the recruiter... For the younger guys, enjoy every minute of it - time goes by fast.

Maybe it was calling PERS as soon as I got the email concerning transfer to the retired reserves, maybe because high year tenure popped it to the top of the list or maybe it was just pure luck - but I received my paperwork, flag and unofficial point capture total within 6 weeks of mandatory retirement.

I just went through the PERS gauntlet. I had my paperwork there 7 months prior. It was processed on my birthday and sent to DFAS. It is clearly not a first come first serve basis, but you still want to get it there early so they have it. I was told they only have 5 clerks working which is down from 12 clerks.

Sounds about right. The reserves looooove paperwork every bit as much as the active component, but staffing for it is another matter.

I'm obviously on the Marine Corps side of the house, but transitioned to the Reserves last year and am actively drilling. I wasn't planning on doing any PME but my 15C sim job is super lax and I've essentially completed USAF Command & Staff in four months. Anyone know if I can drop into the IRR at around 18 years and just do another branch's version of Command & Staff for the points I need to get the last two "good years?" Or is it once you do one version, you can't do another for Reserve credit?

Found out in June I could start collecting 9 months earlier than I thought (thanks, GWOT deployment), sent in the paperwork about 6 months prior, bought a new car early, called PERS 912 to see where my pay was on the new "start collecting" date, and they said they are well behind. :)

Does anyone know how many years you must complete as a prior enlisted officer to retire in the reserves? I've heard 8 years from some 10 from others?

It’s all about qualifying years - you need 20 total. It doesn’t matter the combination (active/reserve or officer/enlisted).

Not sure where or what the 8-10 years you heard is about.
