No More DCOIC as of FY20 - ODS Guidance

As of 1 Oct 2019 (FY20) the Naval Service Training Center (NSTC) is eliminating the 2 week DCOIC Course and will now require our DCOs to attend the 5-week Officer Development School (ODS) for their Officer Accession Training.

Any questions from unit N7s or NOSCs should be directed to the CNRFC N74 DCOIC/ODS coordinator, located at the CNRFC N74 DCO Portal.

To ensure you receive a quota, new Direct Commission Officers who check-in to the NOSC should, after completing the "gain," request a "NO NAME" quota for FY20 Officer Development School (ODS) through eNTRS. Specific member information must be updated no later than a month prior to the course convening, or the "NO NAME" will disappear.

YES! Thanks
Did you end up getting a DCOIC seat? I finally pinned O-1 last week and even drilled as an Ensign last weekend, but until I'm gained by my new NOSC, I can't even try to get a seat. I'm really hoping they add some seats to the remaining DCOIC courses. I have zero interest in doing ODS. PS - I met Sculpin in person last weekend in Newport. He's there for DCOIC now. I drill there. Looking forward to hearing what he thinks of the course when it is all done and if he'd really want to do 5 weeks of that stuff... :)

I didnt no - i am waitlist 2 for the may course. So encourage 2 ppl to drop out please! Ha
I live an hour away from the school. I could drive there to pick up a slot with very little notice. I'm sure with Orders ect... it will not be that easy - but I need to find a way to get this on before this chance becomes official.

I can see the appeal of ODS for some. For me - it's a bad deal. I'll put a smile on and go. I'm in the Navy. Not the first raw deal and not the last, but part of why I choose DCO is because of the training schedule. I've got like two years of planning, including job changes, a new baby ect... circling around waiting on this two weeks school. I'm happy to take my knocks for the Navy when needed - but I don't see that this is needed for me personally - but to others it is.

I freely admit - I need to learn to officer better. It's going to take some time to do that after being on the enlisted side for 9 years. But I will do it.

But basic Navy - I got down. I'm sure there's more to the school than I know - but I don't want to do five weeks of marching, anchors away, and saluting. I got that stuff down.

The officer side will come with time. Two weeks is enough for prior service for a reserve commission in my mind. People disagree and I get it - but I still think it's true.

We have a better shot of two people showing up and not meeting height/weight - but I doubt there will be time to fill the seats. I could drive down or even show and and sit in stand by when the class starts waiting for someone to bottom out the scale...

There won’t be time. If they fail single point circumference, they have another day to make the 3-point tape, and if they fail that, it’s already too late to add another person.

I thought they sent you home immediately if you do not meet weight in requirements at DCOIC? At least that was the case when I attended. There is always a class with one or two who do not meet height/weight.

They do. But “immediately” for the O-4 doctor in my DCOIC was Tuesday morning, if I recall correctly. That’s too late to bring a new person into the class. They’ve already missed a bunch of stuff. Plus, ya know, NROWS...

To be honest, OTCN should just increase DCOIC class sizes this FY. They’ve held “superclasses” in the past, and while painful, everyone (students, instructors, schoolhouse, Big Navy) still got done what needed to get done, on time and on cost.

I'm in the same boat Reservist, waiting to be gained to try for a seat. I had 6 years active, I have no desire to do 5 weeks of ODS. That stuff gets old fast.

Donte - I'LL stay in touch with you. As soon as I have grounds to call training command - (meaning I'm gained) - I'm going to see if I can find some room to wiggle. I'll let you know if I have any success. It might be good if more of us try to wiggle so they listen and form a super class.

Being from the enlisted side - I get chain of command ect... Little nervous to make these calls without a more Senior Officer backing me up - but I'm going to find a way to avoid going to this 5 week school or exhaust all options before I give up.

I'll PM you the same just so I can keep things straight when I have something new to add.

Great point, we should change the regs to let all prior enlisted skip all forms of commissioning indoc programs. Waste of time because you already know how to march...
