NEWS 737MAX

Why the US grounding now? Seems odd after the FAA was so resistant for so long. ‘Public’ pressure finally did it?

Less than a week from the first grounding is “so long”?

A subjective term to be sure but what has changed in the last few days to justify the grounding, other than pubic pressure? Especially when most airline pilots here express confidence in flying or riding in the plane?

It wasn't the pros at the FAA. The President ordered it. So yeah, public pressure, politics, anything but data. The recorders will be read out in a day or two. Ethiopia has been sitting on them and they don't have the means to download the data. They sent them out today. If it turns out to be the same anti-stall system that is implicated in the Lion Air mishap, FAA would have grounded then anyway.

From what I'm reading, they now have evidence of the flight track that shows it to be almost the same as the previous 737MAX crash. Plus the FAA has a bunch of U.S. pilot reports about bad flight characteristics including an uncommanded pitch nose down. I'm sure there was some public pressure too especially with the all knowing about pilot things flight attendants union (AFA) demanding they be grounded.

That being said, the guys I know that fly MAXs don't have a problem with the pane.

A number of journalists have reported on NASA ASRS data - and have dramaticized the data - fairly successfully it seems.

They probably have gotten it all wrong, not understanding anything about the aircraft, it's various differences, procedures and training.

It seems like a mix, one of the news channels this morning kept highlighting a single complaint from a pilot criticizing the lack of training on the new features of the 737 MAX after the accident in Indonesia and not about a flaw or incident they had experienced. At least one or two incidents others complained about uncommanded pitch down but only 5 (?) or so reports about the 737 MAX were in the system out of thousands of reports, something only noted once or twice on the news.

I think it was a mistake for Boeing to basically hide the existence of MCAS. If they had at least disclosed that it existed maybe lives could have been saved.

Those are good examples of what may be taken from a NASA report by the uninformed. A transient "pitch down" is not anything like the runaway trim experienced by the two Lion Air flights. And a lack of training AFTER the Lion Air flight is the fault of individual airlines. My airline has trained to it and there has been much in the news regarding proper actions to take. So yeah, NASA Report in the hands of the press is a dangerous thing.

Do we know for a fact that a decision at FAA didn't precede the POTUS announcement? Did FAA continue to non-concur up to the end?

Actually I don't. My understanding is based on the President's comments and the broadcast timing. I may have gotten the timing wrong as I wasn't listening continuously. I know the American Airlines union seemed to be caught flat footed. I would think the FAA would have given the airline and subsequently, the pilots union, a heads up if a change was coming. This has the look of typical Trump management. Do we know something else, based on online releases with time stamps or other data?

I would prefer the FAA made up their own mind whether I agree or not.
