V/r vs. R/

If you’re in JOPA and you’re calling anyone below the rank of O-5 “sir,” you’re doing it wrong. Butthurt blackshoes exempted on a case-by-case basis, depending on the ensuing ass-pain or career damage.

/R,
A damn dirty hinge

Or if you’re MPRA, because... MPRA

Or if you’re MPRA, because... MPRA

Be the change you want to see in the world...in this case by calling DHs by their callsigns and giving them a curt head nod. 99% of them think that's more respectful than the salute anyways.*

*This statistic, like most 99% used on this site, is a complete fabrication and is not meant to be taken seriously.

Fixed it for you.

It's R, not R/.

The slash is to separate V from r. So it's V/r, to seniors and R, to samesies/subs.

I refuse to do either. It's as dumb as answering the duty phone with the standard "how may I help you, ma'am or sir. "

...but not quuuuite as dumb as "how may I help you, sir, ma'am, or chief." This appeared to be the gold standard for telephone answering across my carrier tours.

Just imagine the cumulative man-hours lost to tacking on all that unnecessary verbiage.

When I call, I just want to know that I called the right place, and who I'm talking to. Why do we make this so difficult? *shakes fist at sky*

Too late. Although I think you might have another 8 days until NMCI nukes my account, so if you want to go back and correct my correspondence, be my guest.

What if it's a senior chief, or a master chief? You just demoted them with your unnecessary verbiage!

That's why you should always acknowledge anything the other person could possibly be: "Good morning, this is ENS Shmuckatelli in ready room one on carrier vessel seventy-nine on an unsecure line, how may I help you, sir, ma'am, chief, senior chief, master chief, admiral, general, doctor, lordship, or your majesty..." :(

OR:

"Ready one, ENS Shmuckatelli..."

Finally,

Regarding email signage... get a life. Nobody cares, and if they care, they don't matter. Even if they insist they matter.

Cheers,
Me

To add to the "superman" part of the greeting, depending on the mood, we would do a "full" greeting to the effect of "Good morning, Commander Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 11, world's finest weapons tactics unit in the P-8A Fleet Introduction Team building aboard the master antisubmarine warfare base, Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida. LT XXX speaking, how may I help you superman?" Granted, always looked at the number to see who was calling before doing that.

My last boss (who has been in the Navy 30 years and is basically out of fucks) had a rotating line of bullshit collateral duties that he kept in his email signature to fuck with people who think those kind of things are important. Some of them sounded sort of legitimate until you got to the last one or so which made it obvious he was just trolling.

Eh, I just V/r everything, regardless of rank. Safe and effortless move for an O-3. I do enjoy when people send me an R because it implies they're manually typing it in upon considering my rank. It shouldn't feel like a petty thing (it be the rulez, yo), but it does. Nothing says "tasker" like an R at the bottom of an email.

I maintain the tradition as taught and out of habit, but don't really care if someone were to do it differently. As fucked up as the Navy is, there are plenty of other things to worry about.
