API Aerodynamics

I've fixed them, now I fly them!
I havent made it to API and found some study material on the NETC website, but they have information based of the T-34 should I study that material even though it is a 99% chance that I will fly the T-6 in Primary? Has anyone how recently finished API know if the change the books to the T-6?

It's probably more like 100% at this point. I finished around Halloween last year, and they were all still teaching T-34 systems, even though most of us (myself excluded) were going T-6, and I hadn't heard of any plans to change that.

So, I should go with the T-34 study material?

I believe that the material should be near identical, with the exception of the statements that say "In the T-34..." or "The T-34 has..."

That being said, I am almost certain that a couple classes behind me, were supposed to transition to brand new T-6 books. They would have just recently completed API, or just about to, if that is the case. I will try to ask some of the guys behind me, if they were still using T-34 books. However, for now, you should be pretty golden to read the rest of the material, since most of it is pretty non aircraft specific.

Second what Kilroy said.

I "learned" T-34 stuff in API, flew the T6 in primary. 99% of the Aero stuff in API is general stuff that you'll learn either way. Study the T-34 books to your heart's content.

I would never assume that RLSO and I are on the same side, but why would API Aero be "platform specific"? Isn't basic aero just…the basics of aero? Lift vs. weight; thrust vs. drag; effects of multi-axis flight controls; CG vs. center of lift?

I expect there's a reason for it…to start with a focus on your first airframe…then build from there. Cool.

It is really only "platform specific" when it comes to little nuggets of information, such as "length/height, Wingspan, Aspect Ratio, Dihedral Angel, Angel of Incidence, Max AOA, stall warning, airspeed limits" etc... The core of the classes stay the same, just a few of the questions would change on the exams.

To the original poster, they are also adding some more classes to API, so whatever books you can get your hands on now, will help, but you will still have to buckle down when you get there =)

Pull stick back....nose goes up. Push stick forward....nose goes down. Class complete. Don't worry about all that p-factor and torque and the effects of an aft CG. That's all just fluff.

Mav begs to differ.

Aero is all PFM anyway.

The curriculum on the NETC website would be a good start but they are changing API this summer. They're changing aerodynamics so the T-6 is referenced instead of the T-34. A new course is also being added in Naval Aviation history and ethics while taking two days out of the training schedule. They had a class, which graduated last month I believe, that "test drove"the new format...not sure how the class did or anything but they're pretty close to implementing the new material.
