The endless uniform combinations they had back then does surprise me.

Meh, it's a lot more 'endless' today than it was back in the '50s (especially in working uniforms). The winter SDB Navy blue combo cover would appear to be black in a b&w movie.

Most Navy former winter uniforms/accessories have gone away since the '60s (AWGs, E flat hats, etc.), or ignored. Probably Bush's fault... or maybe global warming?;)

Here's what may be a stupid question, couldn't find an answer on Google... I was browsing photos on airliners.net and came across an F/A-18D marked in VMFA-232 colors, even though it's an F/A-18C squadron.

What's the reason behind having a two-seater in a single seat squadron? Equipment requirements?

They got a couple of Deltas before a 2010 deployment to Afghanistan. Not sure why, maybe for FAC.

That wasn't it. I think it had to do more with aircraft availability. Somebody told me about this a few years ago, but I can't remember the details.

ATARS capability

I didn't think anybody actually used that. Go figure.

I thought it had something to do with running short of C's that had traps left in them. They had to substitute some D's to get the boat squadrons out.

Like I said, I heard about this a few years back and the details escape me. You would have better gouge on Hornet deployment issues.

Just finished watching It's a Wonderful Life and at the end Harry Bailey comes back in SDBs with a blue combo cover. When did the Navy get rid of those? My google-fu yielded me nothing.

About 1960, I had an instructor who commissioned in 1960 and he said he was one of the last to get issued them and he never had a chance to wear it before he couldn't anymore.

Yeah, pretty sure they still had a couple of them for a while on their ramp when they got back. Never heard the full story behind it though.

Yep. I used their ATARS a few times as a FAC. Bro-network photo-recce was often easier and more effective than trying to go through the proper channels with the RCT/Wing RFI process.

There are also D squadrons with a single seat jet or two. It's strange to see when you know a Navy 2 seat squadron wouldn't ever let that fly.

1) When exactly does BAH pay start? I thought I heard/read at one point that we'd get it at OCS, but NavyCS says "Housing allowance is payable when government quarters are not provided or when temporarily residing in barracks." Since they have BOQ at Newport (and presumably at Pensacola after that for API), when do you start receiving BAH as an SNA/NFO?

2) I've heard about a dream sheet where we list what platform we'd like, and if our grades are good enough in flight school we just might get it. When would we fill out this dream sheet, and what other stuff can you put on it? (I imagine for one thing, where we'd like to be stationed, platform-dependent of course.)

I'm not an OCS guy so I don't know when you'll start collecting BAH. But if you haven't by the time you check into Schools Command you definitely will provided you're living off base.
